I haven't seen this 1997 CD-- its main title is Wouldn't It Be Nice-- brought up here before.  On the whole, it's not a very good compilation, mainly because it really doesn't contain much real jazz; the preponderance of the music is what some call "elevator music."  I call it "wallpaper music,"  a pleasant background for socializing.  Real jazz isn't background music; it's deep and challenging, demanding of one's attention,

There are some tracks here, however, that reward one's close listening.  The Brazilian pianist Eliane Elias performs an exciting medley of "Our Sweet Love"/ "Friends."  The Clark Burroughs Group, a mixed vocal sextet, contributes wonderful a capella interludes on "Can't Wait Too Long," "I Went to Sleep," Cabinessence," Surf's Up," and "Til I Die."  These fragments, little more that 5 minutes in all, are spread throughout the album.  I burned them to my own disc end-to-end to enjoy them consecutively.

About 90% of the music I listen to is instrumental jazz.  The Beach Boys' music is one of the reasons I respond to jazz.  Behind the Boys are tight-harmony vocal groups like the Four Freshmen and the Hi Lo's (of which Clark Burroughs was once a member).  Behind these jazz/ pop groups are the wonderful band arrangements of the pre-rock age, scored chromatically like a trombone or saxophone section, giving the Boys the added dimension of connecting to the art music of the previous generation.

Other than the tracks I've singled out, the disc is a disappointment compared to the great statement it could have been:  music meant to be listened to.

Yeah, man and where Brian essentially came from, but so many other influences stepped in:

Thanks for this.  Avoiding the elevators though.

Funnily enough, this excellent Larry Carlton track from the album came up on my car mix as I was driving through town yesterday...
