******ATTENTION: ALL FUTURE HOSTS******

Copyright blocking of clips in certain countries is rife.

I strongly encourage all future hosts to ensure your choices are available to be viewed in all participating countries (currently UK, US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Germany & Sweden).

The invitation is there for upcoming hosts to e-mail me through your options, which I can then remit to our ‘team’ around the globe to get the green light.

Of course, you’re very welcome to do that yourself.

But please don’t leave it until the last day or so to seek clearance on your clips. It can take time.

Yes, exposing your song choices to five or so others in advance might diminish slightly the fun of it, but that’s a small price to pay for the ‘fun’ we’ll have trying to get issues sorted if, instead, the first time we’re aware of them is after the clips have been posted for your week!

To the best of my knowledge, the blocking chiefly stems from owners of the material (such as record companies) not wanting the market to view/hear their product for free via the internet.

Understandably, they want consumers to actually buy the product in order for them (and their artists) to benefit.

Great for them, not great for our game!

In some cases, it may be that the owner of the clip is simply limiting access to certain regions.

For us, the consequence of a week where a song can’t be showcased in a country is three-cornered contests that have the potential to catapult songs into play-offs because part of the world cannot evaluate one of the songs. If you’re not familiar with a song and have no way of hearing it, it’s likely you’re going to place it last.

In the past few months, hosts have had to withdraw two Beach Boys recordings that cannot be heard via any video sharing website in the UK.

They are ‘I Just Wasn’t Made for These Times’ (Pet Sounds) and ‘I Was Made to Love Her’ (Wild Honey).

It would be extremely optimistic to suggest they’re the only two.

Sometimes, it’s obvious when clips won’t work everywhere. For example, YouTube clips that have the word ‘Topic’ after the artist name will likely not work in all areas.

But sometimes it isn’t.

Jenny’s debut Week 16 took several days to organise.

t’s Week 17 also encountered blocking issues that were not fully resolved. (Because neither of us could view the clip of ‘Telstar’ that worked only in the UK, we weren’t able to say for sure whether it was the original recording.)

As in this case, sometimes multiple links are necessary for the one song to be heard everywhere.

Fortunately, both Jenny (GGH) and t sent their proposals in over a week before they were up.

My thanks to the hosts for their patience and the folk who, virtually every week, kindly let us know what does and doesn’t work in their various parts of the world.

There are plenty of ‘solutions’ to this universal problem posted on the internet by people who seem more technically minded than myself.

But, as yet, I’ve not found any of these to work.

If anyone can make suggestions as to how we can post sound bytes of complete recordings on these pages that work everywhere and don’t infringe copyright, please come forward!

Cantina and I are exploring possible ways around the video dilemma. We welcome any help.

Meantime, it would be appreciated if hosts are fully aware of this issue and do their best to make sure there are no issues before they post their final four choices.

Yes Darren...It's becoming more and more of an issue with each passing week.  There were 2 instances this week alone with ***t's*** battle where I felt inclined to substitute links for videos posted which I could not access.

'They' don't get that as long as files can't be downloaded that they're actually great advertisements for the song/album.  Fools.  For their marketing 'grade' I give them an F-.
