GOLD Nate & Brian.  Gotta start listening to this album more.
SILVER Emeli.  Might've heard this somewhere.  Not the next two, and no, I don't let that fact influence my votes.
BRONZE Maggie - well, I like the vocals (mostly)
TIN Sebu

Larry, that's a wonderfully poignant and reflective selection of recent Brian Wilson songs! Contemporary music doesn't get much better than that!

Yes, yes, - but with 14 voters this week.  Things going on - I know, I know and we had a LOT of discussion this week on said topic, but I would LOVE to close these books on the week and move on to T's week of pretty.

So go to your local voting booth and pull that curtain and get the tally in, please.  The world awaits.

And John B, I couldn't count your vote as you said same as Bonnie "My votes are exactly Bonnie's order this week! Except Bonnie had not voted so I suspect that you were agreeing with Cindy. Really, I'm not sure. PLEASE make this official by you!

Thanks to ALL who voted and partook in the decade that is and was with two and 1/3 more years of this one.  Hopeful that something/someone emerges to take the world by storm and be musical and show/give us something to REALLY appreciate.  Kind of why we are all here after all, following the GREAT Brian Wilson, still, some 56 years after he/they was/were "Surfin'".

But with the Battle of the Bands - it's the votes that speak!  Let's wrap and finish.

Larry and Tom, and we can debate that list.  Here's hoping that Brian D. Wilson has a few more musical treats to share with us from his musical palette.  He can STILL do it, that's for sure.  We're assuming that this is your playlist, Larry, and THAT is a cool thing to do to showcase. And for Jenny and KDS, you know the good things when you hear it and are here to share.

Thanks again to Lee, Gracie, KDS, Cindy, Jenny, Larry, T, Lisa, Bonnie, Tom, David, DAN, Deb for the votes (and any more still to come).  But get over to T-Bedford's and check out the NEW Battle!

Firstly, my apologies for not having the time to devote to your week as much as I’d would’ve liked, Al. I did listen to all four tracks repeatedly on separate days of last week.

I didn’t have the time to watch the clips, but it’s the music that counts.

All power to you for showcasing some recent songs, but this was like listening to cardboard for me. Bland.

Gold - Saturday Night (Brian Wilson featuring Nate Ruess - 2015)
It’s the only one I could get from the start. But it’s flyweight.

Silver - On + Off (Maggie Rogers - 2017)
Not necessarily a pleasurable sound, but it’s the biggest earworm of the week.

Bronze - My Kind of Love (radio mix) (Emili Sandé - 2012)
Impassioned. And seems shorter than it actually is. That has to be a good thing.

Participant - Safe and Sound (Capital Cities - 2011)
The song is ok. I just don’t like the effect on his voice.

I’ve made a list of my 10 favourite songs from the 2010s so far.

I haven’t included anything from No Pier Pressure because I’m ashamed to say I haven’t been inspired enough to buy it yet. And this week doesn’t change that.

1. Believe It When I See It (Ron Sexsmith - 2011)

2. Set Me on Fire (Missy Higgins - 2012)

3. Emmylou (First Aid Kit - 2012)

4. Follow Your Arrow (Kacey Musgraves - 2013)

5. It’s Not Right (Katharine McPhee - 2010)

6. New (Paul McCartney - 2013)

7. Ex’s & Oh’s (Elle King - 2015)

8. Somebody That I Used to Know (Gotye featuring Kimbra - 2011)

9. Someone Like You (Adele - 2011)

10. Wildflower (the JaneDear Girls - 2010)

Four of these – ‘Believe It When I See It’, ‘Set Me on Fire’, ‘It’s Not Right’ and ‘Ex’s and Oh’s’ – have all featured in battles. (Results, respectively, were a Tin, 7th in Bronze Play-Off, a Tin, and 7th in Silver Play-Off).

Final Tally for the week with Darren's closing votes (15 excellent sets of votes this week).

The Gold goes to Brian Wilson and Nate Ruess for Saturday Night  56.5 - There was nearly a clean sweep except for three voters.

The Silver is to Emeli Sande' and My Kind of Love 33.5 I was hoping to hear more about her from UK voters but they must be on summer holiday now!

The Bronze to Capital Cities with Sebu and 32.5 (close)

The tin for the week, sadly goes to newcomer Maggie Rogers with On & Off who we should be hearing more and more about.  She had 27.5

It all adds up.

Thanks,
all for the voting and input about what is relevant now or in recent years.

Closing:

Well done, Al.

And well hosted as always.

'Saturday Night' is the eighth track from No Pier Pressure to appear.

It's Brian's most successful solo album in the Battle.

Its record:

This Beautiful Day (a Silver in Week 11 of Season VI, 2nd in Silver Play-Off - Graciegirl),

Half Moon Bay (a Gold in Week 39 of Season VI - Peter Simpson; a Gold in Week 22 of Season VIII - Tom Tobben),

The Right Time (a Gold in Week 4 of Season VI, 10th in Gold Play-Off - Al Forsyth),

Guess You Had to Be There (a Gold in Week 7 of Season VI, 7th in Preliminary Final - Deb#1),

One Kind of Love (a Gold in Week 15 of Season VII - bonnie bella),

Saturday Night (a Gold in Week 28 of Season VIII - Al Forsyth),

The Last Song (a Gold in Week 29 of Season VII - Larry Franz),

Don't Worry (a Silver in Week 36 of Season VI - Kevin Witts)

A live version of ‘Runaway Dancer’ (featuring one of your week's singers, Sebu Simonian) won a Gold in Week 21 of Season VI (bonnie bella).

'Saturday Night' scored the second biggest percentage of the year thus far (37.81%) but, as with 'California Girls' (a perfect 40.00% from just 13 voters) from Week 1, a low voter turnout may mean no play-offs. Time will tell.

So how have songs released from 2010 to 2017 fared so far in the Battle?

Pretty well.

But only if your name is Brian Wilson or you have an association with the man.

If not, forget it.

What's the best result for a record from the 2010s with no relationship to Brian?

Noteworthy was Larry Franz's Week 39 of Season V when 'Wildewoman' by Lucius (2013) won the Gold from a bonus track from That Lucky Old Sun (2008) and two tracks from 2010 and 2008; an extraordinary week where the result was inversely proportional to the number of Golds. Just 12 points separated first and last, the Tin got 7 Golds, the Bronze got 6, the Silver got 5 and the Gold received 3. Try that trick!

Very few have made play-offs.

Those that have:

- Al Forsyth's Week 4 of Season VI when 'Ex's & Oh's' by Elle King (2015) came 2nd to a track from No Pier Pressure in an all-2015 week, soundly beating a track featuring Kanye West and one by a Laura Marling.

- Tom Tobben's Week 5 of Season VI when 'Blue Moon' by Beck (2014) came last but scored well enough (against 'Surfer Moon' and two '90s tracks from Neil Young and R.E.M.) to make the Tin Play-Off, finishing a modest 5th.

- Pete Simpson's Week 39 of Season VI when 'Uptown Funk' by Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars (2014) came third when the other three songs were all from 2015 including the winner, an instrumental track from No Pier Pressure. It finished 7th in the Bronze Play-Off.

- Tom Tobben's Week 11 of Season VII when 'Tennessee Whiskey' by Chris Stapleton (a 2015 cover of an '80s song) came last in the closest week we've had (5.5 points separating Gold and Tin). It also came 5th in a Tin Play-Off.

- my Week 13 of Season VII when 'Set Me on Fire' by Missy Higgins (2012) came third to Dido and the Honeys, but thrashing a track from 2010, catapulting it into the Bronze Play-Off where it finished 7th.

Here's how those records from the 2010s have fared so far. (Those that made play-offs are in bold.)

Finally, a tip for young players - if you want your Brian Wilson/Beach Boys classic to make the play-offs, put it up against a non- BW/BB track from the 2000s.

If you really want your Brian Wilson/Beach Boys classic to make the play-offs, put it up against more than one non- BW/BB track from the 2000s.

It's a guarantee!

And THAT'S your "Final Answer"?  [wink]  If you check it out 'B' you'll discover that, once again, you have also agreed with ***me***.

I'm honoured. [thumb]

Glad things are positive re:  your family. [wave]

Darren, thanks for the additions in the voting and to John B for the getting it straightened out for you with your votes.  I didn't have any intention of creating a runaway win (thought that it would be quite close),  but Darren's data sure shows that the newer music doesn't fare so well.

Still, it's good to "disc"over what music is out there.  It's quite diverse, really.  Tom Tobben's mention of go find it - was appropriate.

Back to the present "Girl-songs week" - so I'll have to post something there [smile]
