Thanks to Deb#1 for the election & wrap up (don't blame her). If you haven't voted her week, yet, sorry, the polls are closed.

Rock'n'Roll is all about rebellion & anger...am I right? But anger without the enthusiasm = depression. Ever have one of those days/weeks/years? This weeks contenders:

Paul Simon's paean to isolation:
Simon & Garfunkel - I Am a Rock

Ray Davies ode to non-conformity:
Kinks - I’m Not Like Everybody Else

Sean Bonniwell's song of despair:
Music Machine - Bottom of the Soul

Brian Wilson's hymn to loneliness:
Beach Boys - Ganz Allein (In My Room - German version)

For Cut & Paste purposes:
Simon & Garfunkel - I Am a Rock
Kinks - I’m Not Like Everybody Else
Music Machine - Bottom of the Soul
Beach Boys - Ganz Allein

t -- Great theme, although it could put me over the edge. I'd vote but don't know what to do with "Ganz Allein" yet. Meanwhile:

The Ramones, "Outsider", Subterranean Jungle, 1983

X, "In This House That I Call Home", Wild Gift, 1981

Tears for Fears, "Mad World", The Hurting, 1982

Gary Jules and Michael Andrews, "Mad World", Donnie Darko soundtrack, 2002

Nice theme and I can think of one depressing artist right off.

I'll go with this:

GOLD:  Beach Boys - Ganz Allein.  Although it's in German, it's still an incredibly beautiful song.

SILVER:  Simon & Garfunkel - I Am a Rock.  Very good and one of my faves by this duo.

BRONZE:  Kinks - I’m Not Like Everybody Else.  I wasn't familiar with this one by the Kinks.  It's good, but not one of my favorites by them.

TIN/PEWTER:  Music Machine - Bottom of the Soul.  Meh. Bottom of the list for me.

My final answer.

Back in my young and single days, my best friend was really into Jackson Browne and every time we went out in her car, she played the Pretender album.  I found it to be so depressing.  She explained that his wife had committed suicide and this album reflected his depression over her death.

Beach Boys - Ganz Allein...What is that?  I'm really not sure?  Is it German for my room is painted silver[confused]
Kinks - I’m Not Like Everybody Else...2 Parts of me are bronzed.  Which 2 parts?  Shhhhhhh. [wink]
Music Machine - Bottom of the Soul...and ... at the bottom of the list ... they're Talk Talkin' 'bout tin[rofl]

Whoa! Has everything in the U.S. gone topsy turvy?

First, the brouhaha (which had some of us drinking more brew than haha-ing) over the Presidential election results.

This week, t bedford offers up S & G (who I thought he disliked, or was that just their acoustic side) AND a theme on depression?

No! Don't do it! Come back from that ledge! Take your head out of the oven! Think of the spouse and kids! We'll get through this!

I'll analyze your excellent cases and be back with a ballot, t.

In the mean time,  two renditions of a rather obvious one which came to mind (Disclaimer #2 - No, You Don't Wanna Die!):

followed by a (possible) anti-depressant:

Lisa -- Brouhaha? As in "a noisy and overexcited reaction or response to something"? I can't agree about the "overexcited" aspect.

In fact, I think Kramer had a good reaction to our election in this little clip:

But to vote!

Gold -- Simon & Garfunkel -- It's a fine song, but maybe too ironic to be great?

Silver -- The Kinks -- One I always enjoy when I play the Kinks.

Bronze -- The Music Machine -- New to me but not bad.

Pewter -- The Beach Boys -- The song is in my all-time Top Ten, but this could have stayed on the shelf. I can't think of a good analogy, but it's like something you love the way it is has been messed with so you still recognize it, but really feel that perfection should have been left alone. Of course, others will love it, especially if they speak German.

My mistake, Larry "Poindexter" Franz.  [rolleyes]

How does "dispute" or "dust-up" grab you?

I prefer "titanic struggle between good and evil" or "battle of world historical proportions". Seriously. I would vote for any qualified Republican without hesitation in order to avoid this disaster.

Neil Young, "The Loner", Live Rust, 1979

PS -- I guess you can call me names if you want, but I remember your comment about "two days of pointing fingers, etc" in the veterans remembrance thread you started. "Brouhaha" suggests the same attitude. I can understand that people who don't live in the US and won't be immediately affected may think we're making too much of him winning last week and of course this is Brian's site. But people's lives do come into play here every so often. This is deadly serious business for millions of people, maybe even for Brian Wilson and people close to him. Because this person is not just another politician to mock or disparage. He is a true danger to us and to the world. And part of the problem is that people, including the media, have normalized him all along and are continuing to do so, and the only way to stop that from happening is to point it out when it happens, however impolite or pedantic that seems.

To keep away from the brou and the haha's I'll post early:
GOLD Simon & Garfunkel - I Am a Rock (A winter's day...)
Silver - Beach Boys - Ganz Allein (why did you choose this version?)
Bronze - Music Machine - Bottom of the Soul (d@rn it - my theme was something like this)

Tinner - Kinks - I’m Not Like Everybody Else (couldn't have chosen Autumn Almanac - which I would have given gold!)

Turvy and topsy it is!
It's all helter skelterish:

What would John L say about this election?

Get in line.  Do what you're told.  March to THIS beat.  Hep 2, 3, 4...

You will think THIS way...and you will like it...  [bark like a dog/squeal like a pig.]

Or...you can just wait for 4 long years, yelling fore, before you can do a doggone thing.  There's gotta be a way to kick this crazy fool [and his ilk] to the curb... ... ...

Until the philosophy which holds one race superior and another inferior is finally and permanently discredited and abandoned...there's a WAR!!!  That until the colour of a man's skin is of NO MORE significance than the colour of his eyes...it's a WAR!!!  War in the east.  War in the west.  War up north.  War down south... ... ... WAR!!!

International morality?  I guess we'll never get there.  There's NO leadership now.

Gold -- The Kinks -- Power anthem for the eclectic and misunderstood.

Silver -- Simon & Garfunkel

Bronze -- Beach Boys -- I'm used to hearing that soft snicker before the vocals begin (didn't hear it on the link - I need new speakers or new ears?), which unfortunately, takes a little away from the sincerity on this version.

Tin -- Music Machine -- Too upbeat and dancy for a song of despair IMO.

Thanks, t.

---------------

Larry -- Crumbs almighty. I'm a little baffled at the response. Thought you knew me a little better by now. Just a playful "bustin' yer chops". I've dropped some not-so-subtle hints since last Tuesday (including near the end of a post on Apocalypse page 1) that I'm not sold on ...."Agent Orange" either. Walking on eggshells and hoping for solid ground soon.

t, a very interesting theme.  Instant gold in there for me.

A song about being "in".  Not necessarily a good thing.  Lorde wrote this at only 14 years old.

Thanks to my early voters and video posters: Cindy, Lee, Larry, Al & Lisa.

Cindy, good call on the Jackson Browne.

Lee, I thought your 2 parts were brass. Meanwhile, I believe "Ganz Allein" is 'all alone'.

Larry, don't go all depressed on me. If nothing else, it should be interesting for the next few years. And thanks for the Ramones.

Al, my analogy for using Ganz Allein is that it's a curve ball.

Lisa, just because I don't like S & G doesn't mean I don't appreciate them.

Hi bonnie, thanks for the video, & glad to see you clung onto the down under during recent difficult circumstances.

Personal note to Lisa that you can skip if you don't want to read anything more about our current crisis:

Lisa -- Sorry that I misinterpreted what your wrote and reacted so strongly. You can probably tell I'm among the population that's pretty much freaking out. It's easily the worst thing that's happened to America since 9/11, and probably worse than that, given the possible consequences. It truly is a nightmare. Hell, we lived through Nixon, Reagan and two Bush's. This is way worse. Either the Electoral College has to stop him or he has to be impeached as soon as possible.

So I'm calling my Republican Congressman to remind him (as if he needed reminding) that we shouldn't have a white supremacist, anti-semitic, misogynist, racist, conspiracy theorist named S. Bannon, who claims he's a "Leninist" who wants to bring the whole system down, as the President's "chief strategist".

And that the new President should not give top security clearance to three of his children and his son-in-law so they can continue making money for the President's company with the added benefit of information from the CIA and NSA, in by far the biggest conflict of interest and invitation to corruption we've ever seen.

t -- Back to this week's topic:

Four songs featuring depression and isolation, although not necessarily non-conformity, from the first, self-titled Fountains of Wayne album
(1996):

"Sick Day"

And she's making the scene
With the coffee and cream
And the copy machine's not working
She's a hell of a girl
She's alone in the world

"I've Got a Flair"

Well you know I never meant to hurt no one
But I got a knack for getting things undone
And I got a way of ruining your fun
All the time

"Please Don't Rock Me Tonight"

Baby, please don't rock me tonight
I'm not in the mood

"Everything's Ruined"

One false move, baby
Suddenly everything's ruined
And you ought to know
You ought to know
There's only one way this can go

Personal reply to Larry (again, optional reading for most):

Apology accepted, sir. What concerns me most is if people in public are getting that tightly wound, they don't erupt violently. Someone was shot at a protest in Oregon over the weekend - survived with non-life threatening injuries but still. ..Nothing wrong with a protest as long as it doesn't lead to that. Not all Americans are idiots -- here's hoping y'all get this resolved minus the bloodbath. (Clink, clink)

End of personal reply

Okay, gang -- who's ready for an upbeat song  for this week's theme? (Preparing to be lynched for posting):
