Thanks to John B, Lee, bonnie & t. bedford for the additional music & commentary.

I've never been a Ricky Nelson fan, but his voice suits "Lonesome Town" quite well. And would an urban spaceman live in a city in the sky?

Petra Haden, "Armenia City in the Sky", Petra Haden Sings: The Who Sell Out, 2005

Al -- Thanks for your well-considered vote. Maybe I'll give up and go for a tie, because at this point I have no idea how to vote. Who picked these damn songs anyway?

The Easybeats, "Friday On My Mind", 1966 ("gonna have fun in the city")

The Black Keys, "Meet Me In The City", Chulahoma, 2006

Dent May, "Face Down in the Gutter of Your Love", 2016 (not great but the title is)

The Roches, "Face Down at Folk City", Another World, 1985

Can it be a fictional island getaway like...say...Kokomo?

How about an unnamed island getaway?

Or a place called Margaritaville?

Lonesome Town does sound good.

Kaleo "Glass House", (2016).  Don't throw stones.

Location, location, location...

GOLD -- The Byrds, Eight Miles High -- What a trip! Who wants to join me in the "Eight Miles High Club"? Yeah, baby!

SILVER -- Jan & Dean, Surf City -- Think Brian doing Brian is usually better, but this is the rare exception.

BRONZE -- Beach Boys, That's Not Me -- t's probably right particularly with this track. It's certainly one PS track that seems a little odd separated from the rest of the album. I still smile at the mistakable lyric: used to think it was "I miss my PET and the places I've known" (at 1:09), actual lyric per the box set is *I miss my PAD and the places I've known". A reasonable goof anyway -- kissthisguy dot com has a collection of really off kilter mistaken lyrics.

PEWTER/TIN -- Stevie Wonder, Living For the City -- Good artist with a good song, but the competition pushed him back.

Good job, Larry!

I'll borrow a trick Al used the other week and post a Beatles track that's seemingly vague about their happy place:

and what are The Beatles without a mention of Elvis (Costello, that is -- and he's just as secretive of the location):

kds -- Yes, imaginary places are fine if they contain imaginary people and imaginary buildings.

bonnie -- Not everyone knows that Lonesome Town is where you'll find Heartbreak Hotel.

Lisa -- I miss my "pad"???? I've been hearing it wrong for 50 years???? The lyrics in the Pet Sounds Sessions box confirm it. Now I need to find a quiet place to sit down and reconsider everything else I thought I knew. Oh, and thanks for your votes. I mean, really? I miss my pad? Is he talking about his old bedroom? Because if he had an apartment he liked, it's doubtful he'll be able to move back in!

Al -- Thanks for the country tunes. For those of us who don't know, that last one is Mary Chapin Carpenter.

Lisa's votes gives us eight voters so far. No pattern yet except that Stevie Wonder's wonderful song isn't doing wonderfully.

Speaking of wonderful, a classic I thought about using:

Ben E. King, "Spanish Harlem", 1960

Like the Byrds, the White Stripes are coming in for a landing:

"City Lights", 2016

Seriously? I miss my pad?

Sparks "This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both Of Us", (1974).

Neil Young and Crazy Horse "Country Home", (1994).  Apparently, Neil rocked at Coachella last week.

Thanks for your votes, D.A.N. With nine voters so far, it's about as close as close can be.

bonnie -- I wasn't sure "Country Home" met this week's stringent criteria, but of course:

I guess I need that city life
It sure has lots of style
But pretty soon it wears me out
And I have to think to smile

Don't think I've ever heard that energetic Sparks song.

More Neil Young & Crazy Horse: "Crime in the City", Weld, 1991

The Beach Boys, "That's Not Me", instrumental track

Stevie Wonder, "Living for the City", Innervisions, 1973 (the complete album track)

Little break (but still a Townes).  Is he our new modern troubadour (Woody, Dylan-like?):

T-Bedford no doubt has put this up,  but I'll put it again.  When we got the Kink Kronikles - it was played OVER and over in our house

The REAL Jersey Shore guy.  REALLY like this early stripped down version (where surfer girls unsnap and Madame Marie did get busted of course):

Some places:

Lisa - we can get around the Blue Meanies and here's a Beatles beautiful cover by Miss Blue Eyes that reminds of "the places" (but we insert our OWN places):

Larry, yes, MCC, I Am A Town.
Lisa channeled me - as I was going to put in that Beatles song, but saw that she did.

Keep city, towning and placing this week.  It WAS tough, Larry.  My straight razor is bent.

Al -- Holy guacamole! Judy, Judy, Judy OWNS it! Starting to think that lady could sing the ingredients of a breakfast cereal and make it sound like something much more extraordinary! [cool]

Larry, bonnie & others wrapping their heads around the pet/pad thing -- You're reminding me (thanks to my crazy noggin) of the handsome prince around 5:00 in this Bugs Classic:

Another BW that I don't think has been posted yet (apologies if I missed) featuring one of George Harrison's other schoolmates offering a hand on guitar:

Speaking of George, a palace can be as big as a city, town or village, couldn't it?:

Al, Lisa and t. -- thanks for the avalanche of music today, quite outweighing the votes being cast.

Lisa -- Having thought about it, I remember learning that it's "pad" some time ago, but then went back to hearing "pet". I hope to forget about "pad" one more time in the near future.

I'm still struggling to vote this week. Maybe it will be easier on a full stomach. Meanwhile:

The Growlers, "City Club", 2016

Alpine, "Villages", A Is For Alpine, 2014

The Blasters, "Sadie's Back In Town", Trouble Bound, 2014, recorded 2002 (originally by Sonny Burgess)

Houndmouth, "Sedona", Little Neon Limelight, 2015 (Sedona being a very scenic town in Arizona)
