Gee, Pete,
Elections, depression, body parts….happy holidays?  Good week!
Cantina is winning…but it’s still competitive  with some serious contenders.  I’m voting early.  I’ll be cooking some poor turkey's carcass the rest of the week.  Along with some smashed pumpkins.  So here’s the votes:

Gold – The Beach Boys with “Don’t Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder)”,  seriously, no contest.  I predict top Gold this year.
Silver – ZZ Top - “Legs”
Bronze – The Weeknd - “Can’t Feel My Face”
Tin – Bread - “Down On My Knees”

Here’s a song about conflict between the feet, the brains, and the heart.  What a dilemma.  Buzz Clique may have the advantage over us here.  Sung by a favorite of mine, Glen Campbell.

t, I just got around to your King Missile clip.  LOL!  "I went to the Kiev and ate breakfast", so funny!

Let me try to one-up you with another body part ...  (marginally safer and not as literal in regards to body parts).

And "Skinny Legs & All" is pretty cute.

hey, kds is funny with that dreading the weekend line.  ha.  who's to say conservatives can't be funny?

this week is so hard.  It reminds me of that week when the songs were all so bad it made the Brian-less Beach Boys win and from that fuzzy dice album too if I recall correctly.

Well, 'Don't Talk' is an exceedingly safe #1 gold here.  Fort Knox gold.  San Francisco in 1849 gold.

but then ....?

Growing up in Texas, and knowing full well where La Grange is, I sure as heck didn't want to make them silver, or 2nd place.  But what else can I go with???    This is my most reluctant choice of all time, saved only minimally by being able to call it #2.  (Legs).

3rd place, bronze.  Again, I want to side with the kids, not adult contempo 70's boring old songs.  But...'The Weekend' makes me again go against my best wishes.  So, 3rd place goes to Bread.

4th: The Weekend

John E, THANK you for that Stones performance - wow.  I LOVE the Stones from Satisfaction to the demise of B. Jones (phase one) and then phase two with Mick Taylor.

Dave Dee and co. never really caught on in the States.

Moving on:

Excellent battle this week, Pete! All good songs and a nice variety of styles.

Gold -- "Don't Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder", Beach Boys. One of my favorites from Pet Sounds and one of my all-time Beach Boys favorites. Lovely lyrics and music, and a perfect romantic piece to fit in with the overall themes of Pet Sounds. Brian's pristine vocals are perfect for this song!

Silver -- "Legs", ZZ Top. Brings back great memories of the early years of MTV and of bringing ZZ Top into massive audience appeal in the mid-80s, after a number of earlier mostly blues-rock oriented albums. These guys knew how to use the burgeoning video medium to gain the attention of a mass audience. Video killed the radio star? Not in this case!

"Can't Feel My Face", The Weeknd. I've been a big fan of this song ever since it became a hit last year and became a multiple Grammy nominee and winner. I suspect this talented young Canadian artist will continue to have a bright and creative musical future.

"Down on My Knees", Bread. I've historically only been a relatively unleavened Bread fan, because nearly all their hit songs were ballads and their doughy music eventually seemed half-baked to me. This song, however, rises well and is a nice break from their typical half-a-loaf hits and has a nice warm, fresh-out-of-the-oven, up-tempo pop rock feel. Too bad it never charted in the US -- we kneaded more of this sort of music from David Gates & Co. before their all-too-similar sound went stale after a relatively short shelf life.

A few more "body parts" songs that readily came to mind this week:

First, "Face the Face" from Pete Townsend. I also recall seeing this video numerous times on MTV back in the day:

Next, this memorable instrumental ditty by the T-Bones (actually LA's Wrecking Crew), was first used as commercial music for Alka-Seltzer back in the mid-1960s, before being reshaped into a full-fledged Top 10 radio hit. Here's "No Matter What Shape (Your Stomach's In)":

And here's the actual Alka-Seltzer commercial that became the basis for the hit song:

Then there's the iconic title song of youthful rebellion from the Broadway musical Hair:

Finally, for a bit of internal anatomy, here's "Between Two Lungs" by Florence & The Machine, from their hit album Lungs:

Excellent battle week, Pete, and an amusing battle theme with all sorts of possibilities!

After sinking my teeth into the contenders, here you go, Pete:

GOLD -- BB's, DT (PY-Head-OM-Shoulder) -- Just couldn't be toppled.

SILVER -- Bread, DOM-Knees -- Mmm..fresh Bread... At least to me. Not too familiar with it, as opposed to some 70s schlock.

BRONZE -- The Weeknd, Can't Feel My Face -- Firstly, props to Pete for presenting something from this century and fairly recent at that. Surely, there's other newer, younger artists worse than this. Case in point: How about our boob, Bieber? Heard on radio this morning about him punching a fan in the face, ("The singer, 22, left a fan with a split and bloodied lip after appearing to throw a punch at him while arriving for his concert in Barcelona"):

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-3965222/Justin-Bieber-heated-exchange-security-team-punched-fan.html

I couldn't help chuckling, wondering if that fan was hearing the chorus of this song by The Weeknd afterwards.

PEWTER/TIN -- ZZ Top, Legs -- I can vividly remember when "Eliminator" was one of the BIG LP's back in my high school era. "Legs" is a little worn out to me. It doesn't fit the category, but I still love "Sharp Dressed Man". Need a refresher on that one? Maybe the Bundys can help:

Thanks, Pete! Another alternative (which could be another appropriate for that assaulted fan in my Bronze category) is this limited release from a band that fell in the "Whatever Became Of.." too soon, apparently:
