Sorry, Lisa, there’ll be no ‘give the Gold to the dead guy’ this week.

Gold - Dum Dum Diddle (ABBA - 1976)
You know it’s the winner when you keep playing it on repeat to the exclusion of the others. I hadn’t heard this in decades. Our household was the one in every four in Australia that owned an ABBA album. We had at least three, including Arrival. They were a great group. Great songwriters, talented and gorgeous ladies (I was in love with Frida) and great production. Pure pop and so damn catchy. And this is no exception. The one I’ll keep playing all week.

Silver - Guess I’m Dumb (Glen Campbell - 1965)
It will probably win the week, but not sure it deserves to. Glen’s early solo songs were still strong before he took off with ‘Phoenix’. His 1968 re-recording of his earlier small hit ‘Turn Around, Look at Me’ (from 1961; the one that a young Jimmy Webb bought) is pretty phenomenal too. I think ‘Wichita Lineman’ is possibly the greatest song and record of all time. You can sure hear Brian and Marilyn on those BV’s on this. The instrumentation/production is very Today.

Bronze - The Dummy Song (Louis Armstrong - 1953)
Respect for the jolly man, his body of work, and his legacy.

Participant - The Happy Song (Dum-Dum) (Otis Redding - 1968)
The thing that strikes me is the quality of his voice. But it’s not something I would readily seek out to play. Not surprising that it was on the heels of ‘Dock of the Bay’ and not surprising it wasn’t a hit.

Had to listen to make sure that is the, uh, lyric first.

Someone else would have if I didn't... and he has supported Brian.  I didn't see that, but I saw Paul at the 2012 AFL Grand Final.  I also saw my team lose.

Lisa, an EZ week to vote - (the week of the dummies).

GOLD - one of my favorite Brian Wilson songs that for whatever reason never went BIG and I still think it was the word "dumb" that did it in.  Another mono-syllable, not two (stoo - pid). I don't know.  But I LOVE the song and really like how Glen handles the vocal.  The arrangement is brilliant top to bottom (hear below).  SO - Guess I'm Dumb gets the GOLDen Nugget!

Silver goes to the mighty LOUIS - that thing really swings and is pretty funny.  Love it!  And never heard it before.

The Bronze I barely made it through to Otis.  It's alright.

The Tin - I only made it maybe to the second verse from the great hook and vocal team that just couldn't deliver this one. ABBA strikes tin.

While seeing if Larry hadn't posted this, I noticed that once again - I echo his votes.

And since she IS - Little Miss Dynamite:

Remember this one?

Darren -- Going against the current (thus far) with the first Gold for the Swedish meatballs. Speaking of the "give Gold to the dead guy" philosophy, I realized just the other day that's not so easy this week: 3 of the 4 artists are deceased, leaving ABBA as the sole survivors...to the chagrin, perhaps, of some. Similar to a great line some music columnist wrote some 25+ years back, complaining about the 80s. He stated something like "any decade that begins with John Lennon being shot and ends with Donny Osmond back on the charts ain't gonna be a winner".   [biggrin]

t - I see you picked up a hint on The Kinks. Doesn't "Jack the Idiot Dunce" sound a little redundant? Is there such a thing as an intelligent dunce? Rhetorical question or dare anyone go there?

D.A.N. -- Nice "dum be doo dah" catch with "With Me Tonight".

Al -- Brenda Lee's Dum x 2 was another one of the handful on a short list. Funny you should bring up Garbage's "Stupid Girl". One option I'd considered was picking 2 "dumb" songs and 2 "stupid" ones. For a battle of the sexes add-on, I was thinking of Garbage's "Stupid Girl" and Keith Urban's "Stupid Boy".

While we're at it, might as well post this "Guess I'm Dumb" version by other more current BW co-workers (but remember folks, it's Glen's version in this week's contest):

I'll "dummy up" now for more ballots...

I rest/wrest my dumbness on these votes.

I tell you Larry, I've been echoing yours all too often and I don't look at anyone's voting usually.

Carry on, Teeny Bopper, with your D-week (dweek?).

Guess I was dumb last week when I forgot to vote in last week's contest.  So, I'm gettin' in early before it happens again!

Gold:  Glen Campbell for Guess I'm Dumb.  Never heard of it before.  If I didn't see it listed as a GC song, I would've never known it was him.  He sounds so different in this song.

Silver:  Louis Armstrong for the Dummy Song.  As soon as I heard it, I wondered if it was in a soundtrack from a Nora Ephron rom/com.  SNAP!  Sure enough, it was in the movie, You've Got Mail!

Bronze:  Otis Redding for The Happy Song (Dum-Dum).  Not so happy, more bluesy, but nice.

Tin/Pewter:  ABBA for Dum Dum Diddle.  Nice, but sounds like the same ol', same ol' fare from them.

My final answer.

GOLD for Glen Campbell. Mmm-mm Good!

SILVER for Louis Armstrong.

BRONZE for Otis Redding.

TIN for Abba. This was vying for Silver until it got to the chirpy chorus.
