Great taste, Tom. 'Blow Away' [love] Played the whole thing on full volume.

I remember coming home from school with Mum and hearing it on the car radio for the first time.

No internet, hadn't seen any press, no announcement on the station, but just knew it was a new song from George; three years after Thirty Three and 1/3, which when you're a kid who's had to suffer Saturday Night Fever, Grease and a slew of disco songs on the radio is a very long time.

too long in the tooth to acquiesce to demands.
longing to participate.
waited too long?
well, here we are anyway:

gold: 'heroes & villains pt 1 & 2'
- any way that it's offered,
this'd be my number 1.

silver:  'shine on you crazy diamond'
- when they were good,
they were very, very good.
this is very, very good.

bronze: 'isn't it a pity'
- when the anniversary edition cd set came out
i relistened to stuff i'd not played in yonks.
this stood out as part of a magnificent album.
only, it's not my favourite favourite.
and it's not quite as good as the above.

tin: 'rain song'
- oh, when they tone down the thrash wail bash,
they can be so good.
when they were good
they were very, very good.
and then there's the occasional stinker.
this falls into neither category.
it's just good.
but not good enough here.

enjoyed slivers of listening this week.
thanks
and so long
and thanks for the fish
(er, tracks).

I'm going to close this battle in about 45 mins, at 12pm eastern time, so get your last minute votes in while you can! It's my turn...

GOLD: Heroes and Villains by the Beach Boys

SILVER: Isn't It A Pity by George Harrison

BRONZE: Rain Song by Led Zeppelin

TIN: Shine On You Crazy Diamond Parts 1-5 by Pink Floyd

I feel so bad giving any of these songs less than a gold!😭

Dang.  Sad to see my all time favorite song get a Tin, but this was a stellar group of songs.

I felt bad about it. In probably any other group of songs it would've gotten a gold.

I'd think at least silver, as most weeks tend to skew towards the BB/BW song of choice.

But, great choice, especially since Floyd has quite a few long songs that get much more regular airplay on classic rock radio than Shine On (ie. Time, Us and Them, Welcome to the Machine, Comfortably Numb).

Thanks, Jenny.

And thanks for coming in at short notice.

Those scores are now in the post marked ‘Season VIII’, currently residing about two thirds down on page 2 of this forum.

It was the fourth time a version of ‘Heroes and Villains’ has been used and its fourth Gold.

The 1967 version on Smiley Smile (1967) won a Gold in Week 6 of Season I (67.5 points, 37.29%), 3rd (annual Bronze) in Gold Play-Off; 11th in the Ultimate Battle* (t Bedford).

The Smile Sessions version (2011) won a Gold in Week 1 of Season IV (61.5 points, 34.17%), 2nd in Preliminary Final, 6th in Gold Play-Off (Al Forsyth).

A live version from The Beach Boys (2012) won a Gold in Week 4 of Season V (59 points, 28.10%) (paul g adsett).

This version (2011) received 60 points and 31.58%.

* The Ultimate Battle was to commemorate five completed years of the Battle. The annual medal winners (top 3 from each year) from each year were pitted against each other. There were 14 songs as ‘The Warmth of the Sun’ had qualified twice.

The history of the tracks selected specifically from The Smile Sessions is now:

Heroes and Villains (a Gold in Week 1 of Season IV, 2nd in Preliminary Final, 6th in Gold Play-Off - Al Forsyth),

Teeter Totter Love (a Tin in Week 7 of Season IV, 10th in Tin Play-Off - Teenage Symphony),

Vega-Tables (a Gold in Week 27 of Season IV, 10th in Gold Play-Off - Deb#1),

Wonderful (a Tin in Week 40 of Season V - Tom Tobben),

The Elements: Fire (Mrs. O’Leary’s Cow) (a Tin in Week 18 of Season VII - Cindy Hood),

Surf’s Up (a Gold in Week 28 of Season VII, 1st (annual Gold) in Gold Play-Off - Al Forsyth),

Cabin Essence (a Gold in Week 37 of Season VII, 6th in Gold Play-Off - Darren J. Ray),

Heroes and Villains (Parts 1 & 2) (a Gold in Week 38 of Season VIII - GGH)

It should be noted that ‘Good Vibrations’ from this album has not been used and cannot be used, under the present rules, as the 1966 released version won the Season Gold in Season I.

'Isn’t It a Pity' was George Harrison's seventh entry.

His record:

Marwa Blues (a Silver in Week 8 of Season I, 8th in Silver Play-Off - Tom Tobben),

What is Life (a Silver in Week 7 of Season II, 1st in Silver Play-Off, 1st in Preliminary Final, 6th in Gold Play-Off - Cynthia D. Hood),

All Those Years Ago (a Silver in Week 35 of Season II - Prodigal Son),

My Sweet Lord (a Bronze in Week 42 of Season II - Roy Roger Bridge),

This Is Love (a Bronze in Week 18 of Season III - Gordo1),

Beautiful Girl (a Tin in Week 12 of Season VIII - Darren J. Ray),

Isn’t It a Pity (a Silver in Week 38 of Season VIII - GGH)

Of course, George was in a group before his solo career.

Up to the end of Season VII, the Beatles had had 29 selections in the Battle, 17 of which have made play-offs.

Their record was 9 Golds, 14 Silvers, 4 Bronzes and 2 Tins (one of which, 'Back in the USSR', won a Tin Play-Off).

In addition, ‘Help!’ also won a Gold in Week 18 of this season (Deb#1) and may still feature in play-offs.

'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' (Parts I-V) was also the seventh entry for Pink Floyd.

A truncated version of the song had been used in Week 35 of Season II (Prodigal Son) and also won the Bronze.

That time, it scored 43 points and 23.89% from 18 voters.

This time, it scored 44 and 23.16 from 19 voters.

Pink Floyd’s results:

Us and Them (a Tin in Week 15 of Season I, 4th in Tin Play-Off - Verden McCutcheon),
Run Like Hell (a Tin in Week 24 of Season I - B B Fan1),
Shine On You Crazy Diamond (a Bronze in Week 35 of Season II - Prodigal Son),
The Great Gig in the Sky (a Silver in Week 9 of Season VI - Verden McCutcheon),
Time (album version) (a Bronze in Week 10 of Season VII - Deb#1),
Learning to Fly (single edit) (a Silver in Week 27 of Season VIII - Cindy Hood),
Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts I-V) (a Bronze in Week 38 of Season VIII - GGH)

‘The Rain Song’ was just the second entry for Led Zeppelin.

‘Ramble On’ won a Bronze in Week 41 of Season V (Kevin Witts) and finished 7th in the Bronze Play-Off.

It is an outside chance of making this season’s Tin Play-Off.
