Larry,  Good that you put in some Party.

A very underappreciated album.  Of course look where it stands in the order for BB albums.

Thanks, Tom for your votes.  I briefly considered something from the Party album, but there was nothing on there that I really wanted to put up.  Perhaps if I had the other songs might have done a little better.  My good friends in New Orleans cannot think back to Hurricane Katrina without shedding a tear for the animals that lost their lives or were separated from their owners that day. That was one thing that left a lasting impact on them (and left them with a five rescued cats for a couple of years).

Thanks also to Dan and Darren for your votes.  No love for the Australian from either of them.  I like the juxtaposition between Owl Eye's poppy version of this song and its dark lyrics.

t, great to see you made an appearance.  Hope you are doing better if not feeling 100% again.

Larry, lot's of good in-studio performances from iconic bands.  Good taste.

Hope I haven't missed anybody.  I'll be back later to round up any last votes and deliver the results.  Did anybody want to take me up on that bet I made at the start of the week? No?

Men I Trust, live in a rather large studio called Canada.

back in the land of internetty receptacling
after  floating upstream somewhere across and above the black sea...
now immersed in some live music,
like wot i like.
studio performances can add a vital, urgent edge
to otherwise overproduced flabby tracks.
i like each of these in different ways
and thanks for the offerings.

gold: 'oh my heart'
- oh, my, my...
when they're good, they're very very good.
is this very very good?
i can't decide.
i can decide.
i can't decide...
musically, understated.
lyrically overwhelming.
performance gripping.
oh, my, my...
top slot.

silver: 'pumped up kicks'
- never heard this before.
dismissed it at first hearing.
it's insidiously crept in and logged itself.
not least 'cos of the little whistlin'-xylophone segment.
not the greatest usical offering, but, eek, it's insidious
and i prefer it to the original.

bronze: 'surfer girl'
- a heartfelt ensemble reading.
of more historic importance than immaculacy of it perfomance.
a 'who'd've thunk?' moment.
bloomin' good, though...

tin: 'don't delete the kisses'
- some of my (way younger) friends regard this band in great awe.
i've never quite managed to reconcile wavering views.
never quite 'got' 'em.
this doesn't help me decide.
i think it's the bee's knees / i really like it / i'm immune to it /i'm bored by it
all at the same time.
i certainly admire what they do.
but, by the end of the week, this not my listening cuppa.

or, shall i change my mind?
nope...
cheers

Thank you paul and Deb for those last two votes, taking us into the teens and reminding me of when we got a turnout of twenty or more.

paul, I knew it would be a theme you would like. Perhaps this is not a gaggle of songs you would enjoy, but you appreciated the sentiments of the week, which is great.

So, with 14 voters this is how it panned out.

Taking it away with Beach Boy incarnations all over the show, Surfer Girl, aged as she is, gets 52 points. Another 3 points and she would have hit on her age exactly. Twelve gold placings!  We are a loyal bunch if nothing else. (12G, 0S, 2B, 0T)

R.E.M. gave it all heart and came in with 36 points, which wouldn't be great if it were a heart monitor reading, but I'd say they kept their heads above water with those two Golds and hardly any Tin placings at all. (2G, 5S, 4B, 2T)

Owl Eyes pumped her kicks but failed miserably against the boys and did not do well with Aussie voters.  I wouldn't want to make her angry, that's for sure. (0G, 5S, 5B, 4T).

And Wolf Alice deleted all kisses, with more than half of us giving them a Tin placing.  This translates to us basically thinking they are pretty shite.  (0G, 3S, 3B, 8T)

Thanks for voting this week.

Well done, bonnie.

The original Beach Boys recording of ‘Surfer Girl’ is, of course, a retired song, having won Season IV.

Its journey was the Gold in Week 28 (Jo McGuire) and then 1st in the Gold Play-Off.

In the Ultimate Battle, commemorating the first five years of Battledom where all Top 3 place getters from each year did battle, ‘Surfer Girl’ came 7th.

‘Oh My Heart’ (live) was R.E.M.’s third entry.

Their record:

Losing my Religion (a Gold in Week 1 of Season V - Larry Franz),
Man on the Moon (a Bronze in Week 5 of Season VI, 2nd in Bronze Play-Off - Tom Tobben),
Oh My Heart (live) (a Silver in Week 22 of Season IX - bonnie bella)

With the second highest percentage (37.14) and equal 10th highest points (52), and at the half way point of the season, ‘Surfer Girl’ is borderline of making play-offs.

We now break for a week before Larry resumes with Week 24.

Don’t like the songs people are putting up?

Please put your name down to host in the second half of the year. Places are filling.

And please continue to support those who do take the time to host with your votes.

Gold - The Beach Boys - Still magical.

Silver - REM - Pretty good

Bronze - Wolf Alice - Hopefully Wolf Alice doesn't fall down any rabbit holes.

Tin - Owl People - Can't do much with some a mediocre song
