I’m not going for a theme here.  Maybe you see one.
I’m not going for a particular genre although I may have stumbled into one.
Maybe it’s great vocals, part 2?
Is it a battle of the bands, a battle of the songs?
WYSIWYG.
Make of this week what you will. Here are the songs:

 The Zombies - Brief Candles

 Phil Ochs - Changes**

 Freddie Scott - Hey Girl

 Caroline No - Beach Boys

Cut ‘n Paste:
The Zombies - Brief Candles
Phil Ochs - Changes
Freddie Scott - Hey Girl
Caroline No - Beach Boys

Let’s roll.
---
Edit...........It seems we may have trouble with the Phil Ochs video. It requires going to Youtube to view.  Is this working for all?

**Second Edit.....If you can’t view the Phil Ochs video I posted try this one that Lee found:

Re: Phil Ochs...oh oh… that's odd, it cooperated on the test trial.

I get the "Video Unavailable" screen, but it does play when I click on "Watch this video on YouTube" underneath it here.

Drat! Another regional issue?  [frown]

This one works here Deb.

Gold ...  Beach Boys...Well Brian really.

Silver ...  Zombies.  A pretty close 2nd.

Bronze ... Freddie.  Good tune.  Good version but the top 2 outdistance it by miles.

Tin ... Phil.  Good song but the poor boy couldn't really sing all that well.

Look at that...I voted twice within hours of each other in 2 separate 'battles'.

Deb, unfortunately when we check the clips internationally, I'm not sure there is actually a way of knowing if the person who made the clip has made it only viewable directly on YouTube. (I could always do a test run here the weeks prior, preview the post and then delete it.)

Your Phil Ochs clip will play everywhere, but only on YouTube.

We can still work with it, but I believe the clip below is the exact same recording, just with some audience applause tagged onto it. (That doesn't necessarily mean it's not a studio recording.)

This is a YouTube generated Topic clip so may not work everywhere, but we've been lucky lately.

Perhaps you could add it to your original post and voters could help by telling us if the clip works in their area.

Great choices, incidentally.

It's a nice miscellaneous selection with one standout:

Gold -- The Beach Boys -- Headed for the playoffs?

Silver -- Phil Ochs -- A pretty song, an interesting voice.

Bronze -- Freddie Scott -- A good oldie, although he gets a little overwrought at the end.

Pewter -- The Zombies -- I followed someone's strong recommendation and bought Odessey & Oracle years ago but it didn't grab me. (With that spelling, should it be pronounced Ode - see or Ode - e - see, not Odd - e -see?)  Also, I have an aversion to much of the Baroque period, which this evokes.

Some pet sounds:

Sonic Youth -- "I Know There's An Answer"
youtube.com/watch?v=pD8mdjPjIbE

They Might Be Giants -- "Caroline No"
youtube.com/watch?v=dPfBmtTUaiw

Thank you, Deb.

I’ve been sidetracked today since one of the radiator hoses in my car decided to give up the ghost.  Things are back on track so back to business. Mellow music week.

Thanks to Lisa, Darren, and Lee for getting back quickly on the video availability.  It seems it’s always something as I thought we had done due diligence. Lee’s first replacement video leads us to the same situation. The video is accessible but must be viewed from the YouTube link.  Darren’s video has that “Topic” label…usually a sign of international limitations.  However, it seems Lee’s second posted video works all around.  I think they might all be the same recording but the source info included in the YouTube videos isn’t very specific.  I’ve added Lee’s to the OP as it seems to be the most universally accessible.

Thanks Larry and Lee, first votes in.

Lee, it’s nice when it works out that you can vote so close together.  It frees up some time when you can coordinate.  I may have posted a bit early.  I had almost forgotten about the BOTBs entirely.  I’d already tapped the Pinot and there was no way I was going to last long enough to post with any exactitude if I waited.

Larry, those are some interesting Pet Sounds.  The instrument distortion against the vocal in IKTAA gives it a tougher edge.  I ‘m hearing They Might Be Giants’ Caroline No for the first time.  I’d say the music is ok, but the vocal has nothing on Brian’s.  I wasn’t aiming for a Pet Sounds week, but here’s another copy of Caroline, No, because, well, you really can’t have too many.

Hi Deb.

They're definitely different recordings.

The one you posted is from Phil Ochs in Concert, released in 1966. It works everywhere but only on YouTube.

The clip I posted is the same recording but the CD version. The only difference is the addition of applause at the end. I suspect it is still a studio recording, though. (Wiki backs this up.) Chances are it works everywhere, too.

The clip Lee has posted was recorded live in 1970 and released on the album Amchitka in 2009.

Deb,

Easy vote for me top to bottom.

Gold to Brian and The Wrecking Crew
Silver to Freddie Scott
Bronze to Phil Ochs
Tinner to The Zombies

Maybe Caroline's retirement year? One of my fave all-time Brian songs and productions, even with Murry's meddling

Deb,

I still like my Zombies a la carte:

I haven't heard Phil Ochs in .... a looooong time.
But Neil does some justice:

Caroline at original speed.  Thanks Murry.

I had no idea of the history around Hey Girl.
The Divine Miss King:

Thanks for the week of no thematic connection.

Never heard that before Al.  It totally changes the value of the song.  What an upgrade!!!  It fully captures the MOOD of the 'moment' and enhances it.  So 'daddy' outguessed Brian and talked him into changing it?  NO!!!!!!!!!  Even Louie and Banana sound convincing rather than merely 'nuts'.  And the train?  THAT'S where speeding things up worked.  It sounds more powerful at the faster clip.

[rolleyes]Murry!!![rolleyes]

Aw, good on you for being a responsible hostess, Deb. You obviously learned from that soused stork back in the day on Looney Tunes (from 0:30 - 1:08, for a momentary distraction):

I'll try and be back with my ballot after some sober thought.  [wink]

GOLD Beach Boys.  Easily.  But I don't mind the others.
SILVER The Zombies
BRONZE Phil Ochs
TIN Freddie Scott

Sometimes what you see is... wrong.

Reported to Google that this guy is very much alive and that they've mixed up his info with his Dad.
