a nifty idea.
good one, chum.
cheers (from deepest, farthest cornwall)...

gold: ‘gimme shelter’
- a cheat, really, entering this one.
here each constituent part contributes to the overwhelming majesty of the track,
whether the rhythm guitar, the insistent piano, incessant drums,
jagger's howling ache or aching how
or these backing vocals.
remove any element and it’d be lost.
it’s not a great song,
but it’s a magnificently put together performance.

silver: ‘don’t worry baby’
- well, it’s them, innit…
them as what do that stuff for a living.
quite good they are at it, too.
nothing original in the backing vocals,
but really quite good,
'cos that's what they do.
a neatly newly nuanced lead vocal line avoids the slavish reproduction.
worst bit is the tenor of the repetitive drum thwack
otherwise i rather like this countrified effort.

bronze: ‘garden peas’
- doesn't quite do what it says on the tin.
the backing vocal that godley & crème so wished to reproduce on their recordings.
i like the guitar break but,
out of keeping with an otherwise dull arrangement of a schlock song.
nowhere as good as this group were able to produce.

tin: ‘breakdown dead ahead’
- not heard this one before.
breaking this down, i like the steely dan-ish intro,
but it then just chugs formulaiclike.
nice, enjoyable constituent parts
other than the lead vocal, which is just dull.
the backing vocals are very much as you’d wish.
but nothing gets set on fire as it smoulders along.
an underuse of the individual and collective talents of mr scaggs'n'co.

Short on time this week:

Gold - Gimme Shelter, Stones/Merry
Silver - Breakdown, Boz/Monet
Bronze - Don’t Worry Baby, BBs/Lorrie
Tin - Garden of Peace, America/Carl

Boz Skaggs’ recent albums, especially Memphis a few years ago, have been quite good after a seemingly long dry spell.

I might as well go ahead and slip a vote in late like old times.

Gold - Don't Worry Baby/Lorrie Morgan with The Beach Boys.
Silver - Garden of Peace/America with Carl Wilson.
Bronze - Gimme Shelter/Rolling Stones with Merry Clayton.
Tin - Breakdown Dead Ahead/Boz Scaggs with Monet Owens and Barbara Wilson.

Some nice vocals here, Cindy.  I think Carl is the best, but he didn’t feature prominently enough in Garden of Peace.

Well done, Cindy.

They’re the scores that are now in the book.

The song ‘Don’t Worry Baby’ has been used numerous times in the Battle.

Its history….

The Beach Boys version (1964):
- a Gold in Week 6 of Season III, 2nd (Season Silver) in Gold Play-Off, 5th in the Ultimate Battle (Teenage Symphony),
- a Gold in Week 16 of Season VI, 1st (Season Gold) in Gold Play-Off (Cindy Hood)

The Everly Brothers with The Beach Boys version (1988):
- a Tin in Week 5 of Season V, 3rd in Tin Play-Off (t Bedford)

The Zed version (2003):
- a Gold in Week 19 of Season VIII (bonnie bella)

The Ronnie Spector version (1999):
- a Bronze in Week 7 of Season IX, 3rd in Bronze Play-Off (t Bedford)

The Beach Boys featuring Lorrie Morgan version (1996):
- a Gold in Week 18 of Season X (Cindy Hood)

It was the third time around for ‘Gimme Shelter’.

Its history:

- a Silver in Week 2 of Season I, 5th in Silver Play-Off (Wow! Great Concert!),
- a Bronze in Week 2 of Season IX (Larry Franz),
- a Silver in Week 18 of Season X (Cindy Hood)

It was the fourteenth Battle entry for The Rolling Stones.

Their record:

Gimme Shelter (a Silver in Week 2 of Season I, 5th in Silver Play-Off - Wow! Great Concert!),
Harlem Shuffle (a Silver in Week 37 of Season I - Gordon Higgins),
(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction (a Bronze in Week 26 of Season III - Kevin Witts),
Mixed Emotions (a Silver in Week 9 of Season IV - Verden McCutcheon),
Angie (a Gold in Week 10 of Season IV, 7th in Preliminary Final - Jo McGuire),
Not Fade Away (a Bronze in Week 21 of Season IV - Al Forsyth),
Start Me Up (a Silver in Week 1 of Season V - Larry  Franz),
Get Off of My Cloud (a Silver in Week 7 of Season VI, 4th in Silver Play-Off - Deb #1),
Around and Around (live) (a Silver in Week 22 of Season VI - Rosemary l),
Honky Tonk Women (a Bronze in Week 28 of Season VII - Al Forsyth),
Gimme Shelter (a Bronze in Week 2 of Season IX - Larry Franz),
Miss You (a Silver in Week 39 of Season IX, 1st in Silver Play-Off, 6th in Preliminary Final - Cindy Hood),
Paint It Black (a Silver in Week 7 of Season X - Larry Franz),
Gimme Shelter (a Silver in Week 18 of Season X - Cindy Hood)

It was the first entry for Boz Scaggs.

It was the third entry for America.

Their record:

Ventura Highway (a Gold in Week 17 of Season I - Ang Jones),
A Horse With No Name (a Tin in Week 3 of Season II, 3rd in Tin Play-Off - Roy Roger Bridge),
Garden of Peace (a Tin in Week 18 of Season X - Cindy Hood)

‘Gimme Shelter’ looks a certainty for this season’s Silver Play-Off.

Conversely, the 18.57% for ‘Breakdown Dead Ahead’ is the lowest percentage for a Bronze song since ‘Dependin’ On You’ (The Doobie Brothers) scored 18.12 in Week 39 of last year (Cindy Hood).

That’s how wide was the gulf between your 2nd and 3rd placed songs.
