Time goes by, years pass, the world turns and we move quietly, or not, from one year into the next… seemingly overnight.  You can’t help but think of time passing, and the impending year to come.  All of these songs illustrate the many and varied feelings we have as the old year passes and the new one begins.  Here are my songs for this week:

Remembering the past.

Brian Wilson - One for the Boys

Regrets from the past.

Cher - If I Could Turn Back Time

Looking toward the future.

This Will Be Our Year - The Zombies

Celebrating the present!  Party hearty Saturday night!

Bobby Darin - Splish Splash

Happy New Year, 2017…Let’s ring it in!

Brian...Gold by a wee bit
Zombies...Silver by a ton
Bobby...a distant 3rd and therefore bronzed but still by light years ahead of tinned -
Cher...Undeniably last.

Marching toward the possibility of a future...with some solid memories and Sonny's ex.

2016 is quickly slipping away.  It's been a roller coaster of ups and downs all year.  A lot of celebrities have slipped away too and some were real shockers, like Prince and now, George Michael.  There's been  a lot of violence and turmoil all over the world with the Syria mess and our presidential campaign in the US, a lot of natural disasters and some personal tragedies, too.

There have been lots of good things worldwide, too. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/good-things-list-2016-election-tumblr_us_5824bb76e4b0c56101d5c874
AND since the day after the US presidential election, the Dow Jones has been climbing up, up, UP!  That's really good news!
Not only these, but in our personal lives with family and friends.

I hope that 2017 will be a great year in so many ways.  In spite of Michelle Obama's recent downer speech about having no hope - on the contrary, things are looking a lot brighter already.  May all of you have a blessed 2017, full of good times, good health and happiness.

For now, I'm casting my votes in Deb's battle:

GOLD:  Cher for If I Could Turn Back Time.  Good song, but her risque' outfit in this video doesn't even get a ranking.

SILVER:  Brian Wilson for One For the Boys.  Beach Boys?  It's from Brian's first LP on his own, so...  Very pretty.

BRONZE:  Bobby Darin for Splish Splash.  Silly, but catchy.  Mom and I used to sing this many years ago.  Good memories.

TIN/PEWTER:  Zombies for This Will Be Our Year.  Nice and I hope they're right!

My final answer.

Deb #1, if you ask me, 2016 was more like "As the Stomach Turns".
What a topsy-turvy, unsettling year.  Plus, with this latest nukes nonsense, one can only hope a similar version of the ending of "Fail-Safe" isn't somewhere down the road. Okay, enough of that...back to the music...

GOLD -- Brian Wilson, One for the Boys -- A stunner from his first solo LP, all the more stunning when you learn all vocals - even that basement bass -- were by Brian himself. That fella's got talent! "Mad skills" as Jesse on "Breaking Bad" (currently in marathon repeat on AMC channel) would say.

SILVER -- Zombies, This Will Be Our Year -- The next best tune here for me. Yessiree...fingers and toes crossed 2017 yields some stability.

BRONZE -- Bobby Darin, Splish Splash -- Seems a bit of a stretch for the category, although a soothing bath does sound good for the frayed nerves. I'm keeping my political opinions to a minimum so...nope, not naming names (could be plural) who's all WET this year.  [rolleyes]

TIN -- Cher, If I Could Turn Back Time -- Who's she kiddin'? She HAS - repeatedly - with all that nip and tuck surgery!! Please tell me those sailors were actors, not actual sailors who haven't seen a female (especially one in a fishnet [eek]  unitard) in ages. Brings to mind this classic "Cheers!" line (poor audio, but Sam says something like "GI Joe should come here when he's on leave"):

Deb #1, here's another appropriate in title and content for the end of the year. Note the familiar voice on background vocal, music & lyrics by Jimmy Webb:

This is the first time a Week 45 has included a New Year’s Eve.

I’ve been holding onto these babies for seven years, including ‘Same Auld Lang Syne’ by the late Dan Fogelberg, one of my favourite records of all time.

(Happy New Year - Abba)

(New Year’s Day - U2)

(In the Year 2525 - Zager & Evans)

I was intending to use 'Adios' (as my BW connection song) a while back but, whilst that clip is the best audio of it on YouTube, the first photo on the clip is clearly not Linda Ronstadt, and I thought it took away from the song.

Tough little vote, Deb, but I have to do this now. The trouble is that I KNOW three of them so well, that I can't help but go with them.

Gold to Brian this week. I used this one some time back. LOVE that end climb.

Silver to Bobby although this one is the toughest fit this week.

Bronze to Cher's romp.

TIn - and we liked this song, but can't overcome the three above.

Happy New Year to come. Holding my breath though late in January.

First, thanks to Lee, Peter, Cindy, Lisa, Darren, and Al, who have all contributed to my week.  Votes are in from Lee, Cindy, Lisa and Al.

I’s been a challenge getting back online since late Sunday.  I knew I’d be traveling the first part of this week and that I’d be depending on where and when I could get an internet connection.  That was tough to come by.  I’m home now to enjoy the rest of the holiday week, considerably more connected, comfortable, and cozy.

Thanks for the “Adios”, Lisa.  Unbelievable harmonies again from Brain and Linda is so fine. So, unless I’m mistaken, isn’t that first shot on the video Zooey Deschanel ?   It really is a fine song and video anyway.  And it does fit in well with endings…years ending and past relationships.

Yup, it’s just one I like and that I’ve been trying to fit in and I figured this year New Year’s Eve being a Saturday and parties likely to happen…eh, go for it.

Al, these should all be easy enough…I was going for an easy week.

Just this year we’ve lost so many of the singers, musicians, and entertainers who’ve brightened our world for so long. To name just a few:

David Bowie
Alan Rickman
Glenn Frey
Abe Vigoda
Paul Kantner
Sonny James
George Kennedy
George Martin
Frank Sinatra Jr
Garry Shandling
Patty Duke
Merle Haggard
Doris Roberts
Prince
Billy Paul
William Schallert
Alan Young
Gene Wilder
Bobby Vee
Leonard Cohen
Robert Vaughn
Leon Russell
Mose Allison
Florence Henderson
Alan Thicke
Zsa Zsa Gabor
George Michael
Carrie Fisher

Here’s one I though went well with remembering people and times past: The Beatles - In my Life

Even more so today is a somber day in the Beach Boy’s world.  Because he deserves his own special post and mention today:

Hi Deb,

That first shot -- for my eyes, anyway -- looks a little too legitimately retro to be a young 'un like Zooey. It kinda reminded me of the model on Herb Albert's "Whipped Cream and Other Delights" album, though the hair is shorter in the LP pic. I'm probably way off on that guess, too! Wonder if it is young Linda with the lighting making her eyes not as dark brown??

My heart broke to smithereens on the drive home from work hearing on the radio that the legendary Debbie Reynolds was rushed to hospital. I first knew of her as the voice of Charlotte in the 70s animated "Charlotte's Web" movie as a child, and in later years began enjoying the rest of her career. Man, I hope she beats this trend of exits lately...[bawl]

THanks for the vote, Popeye.
Sadly, Lisa, it seems like we've lost a namesake of mine.  The news just said Debbie Reynolds has passed.  One more in this year's long list of memorable losses.
