Shortly after the start of the school year, your teacher may have asked you to write a short story on what you did on your summer vacation.  In this week's battle, I'm going to use the four songs I've chosen within the body of the story.

This week's contest is inspired by (not in play)

This tale takes place during the summer after my junior year of high school.

There's nothing like that first day after the last day of school.  There are no alarm clocks shocking me awake or my mother throwing my bedroom door open and yelling, "WAKE UP!".  I can sleep as long as I want to and I usually slept late
1. Every Morning/Sugar Ray

Soon after I got out of bed, I'd be on the phone making plans for the day and it was usually spent with
2.  The Girls On The Beach/Beach Boys.

We would stay until the late afternoon working on our tans, swimming, gossiping and flirting with the guys.

One weekend, my friend Paige's parents went out of town for the weekend to celebrate their anniversary and left Donna and Paige at home unsupervised.  I guess they thought they were responsible teenagers.  They invited me and a couple other girls over on a Friday night.  The word got out that there was a party and the next thing we knew there were about 20 more people there!  We were having a pretty good time when we saw that there was a fully stocked bar.  I found a cocktail recipe book and found one for a
3.  Black Cow/Steely Dan.

Those things were so scrumptious and I lost track after about 5 of them!  Things get really sketchy after this, when I woke up
4. One Night In Bangkok/Murray Head.

Try to imagine my utter horror of waking up in a strange place alone and with a mother of a hangover.  It gets a lot worse when I find out exactly where I was and how in the world I got there.  How I finally got back home is another story for another time.  I have no idea what happened and who was responsible for this because nobody's talking.  Maybe they don't remember either...

This should be a pretty good campaign against teenage drinking and to parents who think their teens are responsible enough to stay home for a weekend unsupervised.  I don't know what happened or how I got to Thailand.  Like I said, nobody's talking.  But, if anything illegal happened, I can plead the 'fifth'.  Seriously.

Well, there's my tall tale.  Hope you enjoyed it!

For Copy/paste convenience:

Every Morning/Sugar Ray
The Girls On the Beach/Beach Boys
Black Cow/Steely Dan
One Night In Bangkok/Murray Head

Gold - The Beach Boys - By a country mile this cousin of Surfer Girl is the easy choice for gold.

Silver - Murray Head - Yet another reminder that disposable 80s pop is much more listenable than today's.

Bronze - Steely Dan - With a couple of exceptions, I'm not a fan.

Tin - Sugar Ray - Ugh, what passed for rock in the late 90s.

Ha! Cindy, I took a glance, saw Cheech & Chong and thought, "What? Where'd that come from?".

And, yes, it's the only clip that doesn't work everywhere.

I'm not familiar with it so if you'd like to post an alternative clip of it, please go ahead. I realise it's not in competition but I hate being left in the dark.

It doesn't, Cindy.

They're both YouTube generated clips so they will only work in restricted areas. They're detectable as they sometimes have 'TOPIC' in the description underneath and they all have that look with the album cover inside the box.

Got any more?

Nope.

See how they all say 'Cheech & Chong - Topic' below the clip?

That means they're generated by YouTube itself and won't work everywhere.

Chances are the track is not available elsewhere in the US on YouTube, which is why YouTube creates it. (I don't believe these clips can be converted to MP3.)

Is this the same track, Cindy?

While I can't claim to like ALL of these songs in NO specific order...I DO like them all...and quite a bit.  [but, of course, by degrees.]

Golden...Girls on the Beach.  THIS is one of the VERY BEST vocal performances ever by the boys...Brian, Carl, Al and Dennis.  [plus, I suppose, the guy who no longer makes the pictures.]  Should have been a summertime single release.  It would have followed up I Get Around and owned the summer of 1964 like Wendy didn't, couldn't and wouldn't.  But really...what did Capitol Records know in the 1960s?  Dick ... Clark.  I've spent time with 'girls on the beach'.

Silver...One Night in Bangkok.  A strong contender winning 2nd spot by a nose hair.  Fine theatrical sights and sounds and far more appealing to me than that title song Murray participated in with Andy-Lloyd and Timmy and their little trip toward the stage..  AND...I've spent some time in Bangkok as well.  {Oh the shame!!! ... as I held the balloon with tightly clenched teeth and hoped, upon hope...in my drunken stupor ... that she was a good shot with that oddly propelled dart.}

Bronze...One of MANY great songs from what was once an outstanding set of musical ideas and accomplishments.  So sad that we lost Wally the other day.  The 'Beav' carries on though.  Scheduled before Mr Becker left for his next step in the long climb toward immortality Steely Dan and Donald will honour their commitment to Caesar's Windsor this Friday ... I do believe.  I hope to be there as I know Windsor...although NOT the casino...well.

And following well behind in the hefty-dust trail...Mr. "Do It!!!  Do It!!!  and Every Morning.  Yes I like the song largely, I guess, because it came to the radio in the midst of the early days of the top 30 Dreck-fest which, by and large, continues all too often, to this very day.  So perhaps I liked it by default?  Hmmmmm.  Next to the previous 3 contenders THIS ONE is the winner of the 'Simple Simon met a pie-man going to the fair' contest. [Which, alas, isn't scheduled for this week.]  I like pie.

Some mighty fine listening AGAIN this week Cindy.  Sometimes the choices put a strain on my listening patience.  This week was a long overdue visit from some welcome old friends.  Thanks.

I keep waiting for him to earn back my respect.  Doubtful it'll ever happen again.  The man at the mic can't help himself.  He's a thoroughbred.  He just continues to 'feature' the wrong end...endlessly.

Summer vacation usually starts when school let's out for the year.  Nobody captured that feeling better than Alice Cooper

It can get a little hot in the summer, in the city, in the summer, in the city

But, all good things come to an end, then there's nobody on the road, and nobody on the beach

Two of my gripes...

You'll never find Garth Brooks on YouTube (or Spotify) nor one I'd love to see in the Battle but most likely won't - the studio recording of 'Boys of Summer' by Don Henley.

You're waiting in vain Lee.

DJR, Your link for Sister Mary Elephant is the same track, so I put it up.

Here is an excellent Garth Brooks song as a tribute to Dale Earnhardt, Sr. after he passed in 2001.  Rocked my world to hear that tragic news and then listening to this tribute song, really tore me up.  Beautiful.

Thanks to kds and Lee for your votes.

Lee, glad you liked the songs in this battle.  The Boys had some really wonderful songs back in the day and like TGOTB, with some stunning vocal harmonizing.  Kiss Me Baby is another one of those.  As for Steely Dan, they're one of my all time fave bands.  I had Aja on 8-track and went through 3 tapes of it because I wore them out.  It's still a favorite album of mine.
