Hi all,

Since tomorrow night is Christmas Eve I thought I would post Christmas songs for my BOTB Week.  I am unable to put links in the post.  If Darren or someone else can please do so.  Thank you in advance.

Nice one, Mary.

I had a feeling that you would do this.

I'll try posting some links. If they don't cooperate in your region, feel free to add another.

Brian Wilson, What I Really Want for Christmas

The Beach Boys, Santa Claus is Coming to Town

Brian Wilson, Christmasey

The Beach Boy, I'll Be Home for Christmas

(Think I know my Gold here...maybe I'll have a ballot cast before Kris Kringle comes down my chimbley Monday night or the wee hours of Tuesday morning).

Good choices, Mary. Thank you for hosting this week.

Gold - Christmasey (Brian Wilson - 2005)
Well, apart from ‘Christmasey’ not being a word…. I was glad to see Jimmy Webb and Brian write together. Not sure about the harmonica solo but, overall, it wins on the melody and sentiment.

Silver - Santa Claus is Comin' to Town (The Beach Boys - 1964)
It’s a standard and handled with fun and aplomb by the Boys. Creative arrangement by Dick Reynolds (not the champion Essendon footballer but the arranger for the Four Freshmen). Brian must have been thrilled to work with him. I know how thrilled I was when I met Dick Reynolds (not the arranger for the Four Freshmen but the champion Essendon footballer).

Wiki states:

Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys said of Reynolds: "[He's] just about a god to me. His work is the greatest, and the Freshmen's execution is too much.

Bronze - What I Really Want for Christmas (Brian Wilson - 2005)
Strong latter-day song from Brian. Just takes a while to warm up. Brian sounds earnest. Band sounds good, but they’re not the Boys.

Participant - I’ll Be Home for Christmas (The Beach Boys - 1964)
I used to play the whole album during breaks at my shows. I remember about 15 years ago when I was playing solo at a fish restaurant, that by the time it came around to this and and the even more mundane ‘White Christmas’, the owner telling me to can it. Definitely one for fans only. Would’ve sounded dated even in 1964.

I think this is the best song on The Beach Boys Christmas album and would have been my Gold this week; Brian sounding very different from his solo Christmas album...

Gold - What I Really Want For Christmas - the intro alone - worth it's weight.
Silver - Christmasey- that chorus - nice
Bronze - I'll Be Home - soooooooo smooth
Tin - Santa Claus Is Comin' - but Mike sounds just a little Grinchy.

Al Jardine mentioned Dick Reynolds in the Chrstmas concert. BIG praise.

Everyone should vote early this week, because Christmas songs lose a lot once it's December 26th.

Gold -- "Christmasey" -- It's very nice and benefits from being more contemporary.

Silver -- "I'll Be Home For Christmas" -- The song and the singing are quite good.

Bronze -- "What I Really Want For Christmas" -- Decent but not that memorable.

Tin -- "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" -- Cheesy, especially with that big band arrangement.

Two relatively obscure favorites:

The Beach Boys -- "Christmas Day"

Brian Wilson -- "Joy To The World" (an understated bonus track on the album)

Merry Christmas to all for whom it's relevant and deserve one, and Happy Holidays to everyone else who isn't horrible. [smile]

And thank you for hosting, Mary.

GOLD -- Brian Wilson, Christmasey -- Another brilliant Jimmy Webb tune. I particularly love the guitar, the clip clop percussion and "bum BOOM" tympani on the chorus AND the harmonica. "Christmasey not being a word?", Darren? Harumph...reminds me of this great bit in "Saving Mr. Banks":

(Before anyone asks, no I haven't seen "Mary Poppins Returns" yet, but eagerly hoping to get to it soon. It's seemingly lived up to the pre-hype - goodness knows with some of the gloom and doom going on, it'll be nice to escape with a fun musical).

Now then, where was I?...

SILVER -- Brian Wilson, What I Really Want for Christmas -- Yep, great acapella opening, nice vibes (as in vibraphone) and that clip clop again. Nice non-capitalist, if idealistic, message for the season, too.

BRONZE -- Beach Boys, Santa Claus is Coming to Town -- Not bad, but similar to Larry here, much as I know Brian admired Dick Reynolds, this has always sounded more what Murry wanted to hear than Brian so I'm torn with those arrangements on that album.

TIN -- Beach Boys, I'll Be Home for Christmas -- I know it's meant to be a slow, melancholy song, but this rendition has always seemed a little too slow, too dreary and depressing for me. Simply my opinion, of course.

Here's another of my faves from Brian's 2005 Christmas album - love the Southwestern sound they give it:

One of my non-Brian favourites has been this...Natalie's buttery, effortless voice and a children's choir rather than the adult choir on her father's version really add charm:

To end on a fun note, here's my favourite scene from the classic TV special "Merry Christmas, Mr. Bean", again with kids carolling. If you haven't seen it before, you'll probably die laughing as I did the first time at the ending here:

Thanks, Mary! Wishing you all a safe, pleasant Christmas and holiday season!
