Interesting.  I'll have to get this, even though I still have the copy I got years ago.  Movies Is Magic is one of my favorite Brian recordings of the last 25 years (Wow! Has it really been that long?)  Always happy to learn what Brian is up to.

Such a great gift to myself on Father’s Day!  Had the urge to play this LP weeks ago but held off until today’s ‘unboxing’.

(Sound-wise)  Never thought the first LP (CD) was anything lesser than excellent quality – but have admittedly upgraded the home audio system to near-perfection…so am quite impressed with the clarity and production of this re-release.  [thumb]

(Re-Review)  Just a real pleasure of an album, hitting home for me as a (No.) Cal kid…spending (parts of) summer in (the) Monterey (area) [smile].  And – of course – spending parts of those same summers at Candlestick (Park).  But more importantly, is the other San Francisco connection, as the city where my mother and father grew up, saw the Golden Gate Bridge built, met, fought a world war, married, raised (too) many kids, and stayed together until life’s end. [thumb]

Did I mention my ‘girlfriend’ Jeanine growing up among apple orchards…outside a town that went down at sunset?  I know – weird.[crazy]

And if you can find the post from my drive to San Diego to see BW’s 50th Pet Sounds show, you’ll see the strange encounter I had with the Orange Crate Art inner sleeve…20 years after the 1st release.

You see?  Just another reason I need to be here – Brian’s music obviously appeals greatly to me…but something wonderful happens when the two of these guys get together.

All this – and I've not even listened to the bonus material!
I’ll need to amend this, I suppose.

Mine won’t be here until Tuesday. I do have the earlier CD but I am really eager to hear the additional bonus tracks that I don’t have. 🔜

I haven't ordered it yet but will eventually.  While on hiatus doing my house prep work for summer-rental I was playing the Beatles' Abbey Road and White Album anniversary collections over and over. Now, it's getting time to get back in touch with Brian and Van Dyke - the duo.

Orange Crate Art for me is something special but I was never really into the entire song cycle of it and will have to re-explore.  Doug's writing above credits the entire Californianess of the this album BUT there is the Gershwin influences as well.

It was one of those that I gave as a holiday gift to friends and family.  My then young nieces always wondered how Ramona lost heart. I couldn't answer. Then when my best friend in the universe and I were traveling around the wine country in N. Cali a few years back, I couldn't get OCA out of my head.  I did have a few conversations with VDP about it way back in the day - and he was always interesting and forthcoming. Favorites for me were always the main title song and the Gershwin Lullaby. Some samples of the offering (don't play if you gave it ordered already):

The trailer from Omnivore:

The Rhapsody in Blue  - was this possibly the beginning of Reimagines Gershwin?  It's sooooooooo beautiful and interpretation.  Beyond beautiful. And it's an out take.

Van Dyke tickles the ivory - the two hands sound like three.

Here is the title track instrumental:

Movies is Magic instrumental:

The repeating theme of the Lullaby is a thing of beauty and honestly this is the ONLY version that I have heard.
