Wow!

What a great book!!! Inside the Music of Brian Wilson by Philip Lambert.

Thanks so much to Buggs for the recommendation!!! My 14 year old is eating it up. I have read parts of it. She is seriously into his music and wants to know everything about it. This is a perfect book for her. It was worth the $40 even used on Amazon.

If you are seriously interested in the influence, and technical and music theory behind Brian's music get your hands on a copy.

ONLY 9 DAYS UNTIL WE SEE BRIAN ON TOUR!!!! My daughter has been counting the days since we surprised her with meet and greet tickets for Christmas!

Haha Bugs.

I am sporadic on the page so if I show up I like to read as much as I can.

I haven't gotten too far in the book yet, but it's one of the best I've read. It's really nice to hear about Brian's music in from a music theory approach. It's not the typical "behind the lyrics" or bio type so it's been very interesting. I love the diagrams and charts in the book as well. Being as obsessed with the Beach Boys as I am and a very detail oriented person and musician, this is one of my favorite books so far. Also, I'm glad the author mentions Brian's influences in detail. The appendices with all recordings Brian is associated with are very helpful and very cool.

Hang in there as Chapter 11, Pet Sounds and Chapter 12, American Gospel await.  This is a GREAT book for Brian fans who wish to get into the music.  I look back at it year after year to discover something different and new that NEVER dawned on me.  It's all a process [smile]

AND, just when you thought that this was the absolute, Philip Lambert and company released a NEW book just last fall:  Good Vibrations, Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys in Critical Perspective.

But learn what you can about the music of the man. It's important! [smile] [smile] [smile] [smile] [smile]

I know, AL - but at $80! (last I checked)...I liked the book Jenny is referring to, I really did.  But I'm  NOT a musician (if there was any way to make that bigger, it'd be justified)...so I just don't know if I'd get anything out of it.

It sounds like a great book (Good Vibes Brian and BBs in Critical Perspective). Thanks for telling us about it Al! But $80? That is pretty expensive. But now I'm on a mission to find it.

Now come on now, Bugsy.  The new book is more of a readable set of chapters rather than a musical analysis, unless of course it's a Phil Lambert chapter [smile]  There's a LOT here to read and enjoy but they are BOTH intensive and deep read types of books.  The new one is hard cover.  My Inside the Music is softbound and I'm always worried about ruining it.

I do get your NOT though.  But wow, isn't this a 14 year old young lady singing praises?  The subtle complexity of this music is what makes it all work and it has MANY facets to it.  Since the Pet Sounds box, I became even more enamored with the album and digging into the depths of what happens either harmonically, rhythmically, and even MORE is a joy to unwrap and appreciate.  You just get more of it into the senses and there is a LOT there to behold.

What would be very cool would be for someone not into the musical language to begin to take some theory classes to get what is happening and then it could/would be wham, this is incredible what takes place!

The new book is more of a set of essays, actually.

Yes...but that 14-yr old reads, writes, and plays music...so she's three up on me already, Albert. [biggrin]
