Apparently, kissing was on the increase in the sixties. Seems everybody was doing it. Here are four fabulous kissing songs from the 1960's to take us back to where it all supposedly began. Starting with Dusty Springfield, who doesn't mind crumbs in the bed at all. Breakfast In Bed, (1969). This woman is all soul.
Al does a great performance of this song in concert. The Beach Boys, Then I Kissed Her, (1965).
The Turtles would really like to know you better. That's why the called this song is called Can I Get To Know You Better, (1966). Love the Brian inspired harmonies.
And Petula Clark rounds us off with Kiss Me Goodbye, (1968). This was not her last goodbye though, she's still producing records and has a new one out this year.
Enjoy

Gold ...Turtles Can I Get To Know You Better. Nifty little tune and man ... can Howard ever sing? I really like it a LOT. These guys were, and remain, severely under-rated.Silver ...Speaking of guys who can sing...Al and the Boys nail it with 'Til I Kissed Her. Upon it's release though? A minor quibble from then? Too soon after the original.Bronze . Another outstanding voice. Dusty...in bed no less. One of my all time favourite singers. And here she goes again. Right on the money. Good choice Bonnie.Tin then falls to Pet. Always just a little too pop music/Mom and Dad type music for me. Nice person. Impressive success with a fortified body of work but... ... ...

This vote might be sexist, but at least it's not racist or fascist. Gold -- The Turtles -- One of many very good ones they made. It would have been interesting to hear the Beach Boys cover this. Silver -- The Beach Boys -- Always a pleasure to hear, but it lacks a certain creative spark. The original is more exciting. Bronze -- Petula Clark -- A great voice and a pretty song, although it goes on a bit. Tin -- Dusty Springfield -- Another great voice, but the song doesn't do anything for me. The Crystals - "Then He Kissed Me" (exciting)youtube.com/watch?v=nVb62XPxdsE Buffalo Springfield - "Sad Memory" (gorgeous)("when she kissed me soft and true")youtube.com/watch?v=rKxn7SnK6hs Cool theme, bonnie.

Just before the ‘60s (1959) but it still fits the bill, especially for those in the northern hemisphere this time of year:
Probably wasn’t the first, but certainly was the last:
Or maybe not:
Yoko gets in on the action a bit later (from 1980's Double Fantasy):

Heading off for vacation in the morning on a trip to the Northern Rockies, where our internet access will likely be limited, so I'll go ahead and vote now. Gold -- "Can I Get to Know You Better", Turtles . Big Turtles fan here, and this lovely song doesn't disappoint. Great melody, great lead vocals by Howard Kaylan, and great harmonies from Mark Volman and the guys. Excellent song that unfortunately didn't make it very far up the charts. It was initially released as a single, then it was included on their first Golden Hits album in 1967.Silver -- "Breakfast in Bed", Dusty Springfield. A good song from an even better album, Dusty in Memphis , recorded there at American Sound Studio, home to numerous hits by lots of artists between 1964 and 1972. Love that distinctive Memphis horns sound, layered over Dusty's excellent vocals. Bronze -- "Then I Kissed Her", Beach Boys. Has those signature Beach Boys vocals arranged with a similar "wall of sound" mix similar to Phil Spector's original with the Crystals. Good song but seemed to me to be too much of a copycat of the then-recent Crystals version. One of Al's early lead vocals. Tin -- "Kiss Me Goodbye", Petula Clark. Petula had a string of excellent hits in the mid-60s, andthis was her second last Top 40 hit on the U.S. charts. Not up there with her very best songs, but certainly decent enough. One more smoochy song from the 60s which I found during the early Austin Powers era on a various artists album of 60s love songs called Music to Shag By . "Oh behave!" The title was also parodied on the U2 song from the Batman Forever soundtrack, which I posted earlier.
And in honor of the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, here's one of her earliest and biggest love song hits from 1967, and recorded at FAME studio in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Her days may be numbered, but her music will live on for a long time:
Nice battle and some excellent 60s artists, bonnie!

Getting a new computer this week so will vote now after a day of listening. Gold - Then I Kissed Her (The Beach Boys - 1965) Despite the gender swap not working lyrically, it’s a great memory from my childhood, which just gives it the edge this week. Silver - Kiss Me Goodbye (Petula Clark - 1968) There are other Petula Clark songs I love more, but this is a standard with plenty of cover versions. The only song that had me whistling it afterwards – a good sign. I’ve seen Petula in concert twice in recent years. Adorable. She’ll be 86 in November. Bronze - Breakfast in Bed (Dusty Springfield - 1969) Hadn’t heard it before. The performance is stronger than the song. Participant - Can I Get to Know You Better (The Turtles - 1966) Sunshine pop Turtles but #89 on the US chart is justified. I listened to this multiple times and still have no idea how the melody goes. Not strong. The lovely Petula’s first time in the Battle so here is one we do in our ‘60s show that gets a great response…

Thanks for the early songs, t. I'll forgive you for the kissing that carried on for another two decades. Hey, if you're on to a good thing, right? But Debbie Harry is a classic lip-locker. Lee, I thought this week might be right up your bowling alley. I agree that that lead vocal from the Turtles is just divine. Thank you for your early votes. John E, I considered Kiss Me Baby, but Then I Kissed Her had never been used in the battle ... and I didn't want a runaway gold. Tom, thanks for the U2 clip, which is completely different. Sad to see Heath Ledger in his last role, and also the last few months of life, in Batman Forever. I only watched that movie because of him. Only Rydell I've ever known is Rydell High, so Bobby was new to me as well, although I'm sure he's popped up around here before. Thanks for your votes as well and enjoy your vacation. (And I could have probably done without Yoko, just saying.) Al takes us right back to the swingin' sixties again with Jesse Pearson, a new song for me but oddly familiar. Those girls in the background really have got to go. Elvis had to make an appearance, and he's here before the first 24 hours are over. Kissing your cousin is not advised, no matter how he frames it. Thanks to you as well, Larry, for your quick and decisive voting. The Crystals sure did have some energy about them. This is a great performance. Love it! Nice Van Morrison choices too. Darren - you're voting early!!! Are you sure you've given the Turtles enough consideration? They're known to sneak up and win the race, given enough time. Sad news about Aretha today. Nice to see her on the Battle this week. Here's more.

It's a strange feeling when you get here without logging on, see there's only one person on the site and realize that single "guest" must be you. A few from the Crystals "Girls Can Tell" (Girls can tell if things are right, When they kiss a boy goodnight) youtube.com/watch?v=qbrAFyR9L2k The unfortunate "He Hit Me (and It Felt Like a Kiss)". youtube.com/watch?v=7jyOjQto22Q "All Grown Up" (And if he wants a kiss, I might say all right) youtube.com/watch?v=hwimX0smmD0 Off-topic bonus track: X - "The World's a Mess; It's in My Kiss" (maybe the only punk band that appreciates a good semicolon)youtube.com/watch?v=r-U6dXK4Mig Ok, how about some 60s Gene Pitney? Let's see what AZ Lyrics has to say when you search for "Pitney kiss". "Only Love Can Break a Heart" (I'll prove it with just one kiss)youtube.com/watch?v=i97UXTPT6mI "Twenty Four Hours from Tulsa" (And I caressed her, kissed her)youtube.com/watch?v=-l_gIXj_zks "It Hurts To Be In Love" (How long can I exist? Wanting lips I've never kissed?)(good question, Gene) youtube.com/watch?v=TlN-rKMwF8M

Thanks for your votes, t. Another one not so keen on Petula. I love her version of The Twelfth of Never.
Larry, I surprised myself by thoroughly enjoying three Gene Pitney songs in a row. Looking forward to seeing what else you come up with this week. And I know what you mean about how quiet things are. I'm the only person logged in right now and no guests. I remember when you could expect to see 20 guests on here at any time.
