What was the budget? Not that it matters in the least, but was curious if the film made money.

Quite a few, as those figures above only add up to 1,639,875. Whatever, such a splendid movie deserved a better return.

Indie filmmakers don't normally release their expenses. Considering talent cost, the producer's quest for accuracy, and the distribution cost, I would guess total cost at 25 million. I don't think the foreign numbers for individual country results are all that accurate, but they do reflect the popularity of the film in each country.

Doesn't the film/studio receive residuals for dvd release and other means of showing (hotel rooms, Netflix)?

Owners of the film and the principle performers do share residuals from DVD sales, showing on TV, Netflix, and cable. The amount is usually 4.5% of the first million in sales, and 5.4% thereafter. L&M has sold about $1,700,000 in DVD sales and has ranked in the top 100 Netflix rentals since its release to disc.

To be very clear, the owners and main actors share $45,000 of the first million, and $37,800 of the 700,000. Remember too, this is all driven by contracts which are drafted by lawyers, who probably make the most money out of the whole deal.

This is also why you will never see L&M for free on YouTube.

Thanks for the further clarification.  I don't think this was an inexpensive film to make.  Purchasing the music alone wouldn't have been cheap, in addition to all the other expenses involved.  I suspect that they'll make their money back, if they haven't already.

I still think Love and Mercy deserved a bigger theatrical release than it got.   But having said that it still looks like the film did pretty good box office wise.   Plus it should continue to get viewers via Netflix type services and once it makes it onto TV.
