an , um, unconventional thread, but i'll go with it.
you don't need to be a moonbeam for jesus in order to produce a good song for departing.
you don't need to have faith in an afterlife,
but i suppose it sure helps to imagine a knees up on the other side
once you've adopted that idea.

here's an early one written by the wonderful richard thompson,
from 1969, which has become an anthem for fairport convention.
always the last number at their annual cropredy convention,
where all who've performed are invited to join onstage.
always an emotional ending to the weekend.
iain matthews (a chap i'm very pleased to say is my chum)
leads off the vocals and the incomparable sandy denny takes up.

of course, jimi hendrix wasn't averse to alluding to catching up in the beyond,
but intent on putting on his own terms on a slight return:
'i'll meet you in the next one, and don't be late...':

in a more judeo-christian take on heading for the afterlife,
one of johnny cash's very dignified final recordings:

and, since 'it all comes round again...'
let's have a version by two of my favourite voices,
performed early on in 2014 at cropredy festival:

thanks for the (somewhat pertinent in present circumstances) indulgence.
cheers

make the most of what you have here.
that's the point, really.
why cling to some unknown future at the expense of your current situation?
do something about it whilst you can.

and, there's the magnificent, existential interpretation of
that dylan thomas poem to his father, by john cale:
that doesn't demand an afterlife,
but recognition of what we face,
and our relevance, whilst we're still here ,and how we leave:

taking a similar line,
whether 'out of the blue' or 'into the black',
neil young debates relevance now and beyond the grave
'it's better to burn out than to fade away'
(shortly attracting its unfortunate connotation with that distressed soul kurt cobain)

'if you wish to strive for peace of soul and pleasure,
then believe.
if you wish to be a devotee of truth,
then enquire...'
freidrich neitzsche

'be who you are and say what you feel,
because, in the end, those who matter don'
t mind
and those who mind don't matter.'
theodor seuss geisel

end of sermon.

This is a non-partisan, non-red or blue request:

we know your supreme being interceded all the time in the Bible, bam you're a pillar of salt, bam you're struck dead for touching the ark of the covenant, bam, you hit the rock too hard, Moses, you can't go to the promised land after all, bam, the whole world is flooded, bam, cities burn, bam, enemy armies defeated, well again, so many things happen from above, which is why people pray, right?

so, could you guys do us all some good and pray to stop deranged nuts from shooting up schools, churches, and outdoor music festivals? (and with private Fed EX boxes).  You don't have to pray for me at all, or for Brian...we're both doing okay.

There is certainly proof that this guy Hayzeusss is pretty particular about exactly who it is that 'he' loves.  I wonder how it is that 'Greystoostand' here thinks that he, or she, should pretend to know...let alone guess...just exactly who is on this supposed 'good' list...the alluded to 'loveable' list?  Hayzeusss and his old man...Joseph was it?  Or, instead, was it some other guy the 'ME-2' movement would now mow down in, this, the 21st century?  Whoever it was ain't doin' 'the job' as suggested, outlined and blueprinted in yonder 'good book' and has, as a result, been fired for dereliction of duty.  FAR too many innocents paying the price, biting the dust and suffering needlessly while far too many evil souls rock the world.

So?  Off with you and your false proclamation.  THIS is truly and really FAKE news.  And those who demand money in the name of it are equally evil...and destined for something orange and untoward.  They'll all be wondering where the hell Hayzeusss is and who the heck was his old man anyway when 'it' all hits their fan.  Meanwhile the rest of us duck and hope for the best knowing that Superman doesn't exist either.

Xtians!!! [rolleyes]

My, there are a lot of bitter, God-hating people responding to a post that's not even written to them.  I was speaking to Brian, and had to do it here, as I knew of no other way to contact him. I suppose some of you are bitter because of some hypocrite. There are many fake Christians, probably as many as 80% in the American churches.

But in order for there to be a counterfeit there has to be a genuine. And because of the grace that God has shown to me, I am genuine. That is why I can forgive my enemies, and turn the other cheek when people say hateful things.

I do know that Jesus Christ is genuine. He has saved me and healed my heart and mind. and He will do the same for anyone who turns their life over to Him.

Brian, a couple of months ago, God very strongly brought you to my mind. I haven't listened to the music in over 40 years, so there was no reason to think of you, except that He brought you to my mind. He has broken my heart for you, so I know that He has you on His heart, too.

Jesus said "Satan comes only to steal and kill and destroy.  I am come that you might have life, and have it more abundantly."  He said "Come unto Me, all you who are weary, and I will give you rest."

Our time on earth is fast running out, Brian.

There is peace and joy in Jesus Christ. He loves you, Brian. He died for you. He has people praying for you. He hasn't given up on you, Brian! He wants to save you and give you a peace that passes all understanding.

I am still praying for you. God bless you, Brian.

'a lot of...'?
3 people. me included, responded to your intro post.
you set your own (lack of) evangelical tone
and only now set it in any context.
personally, i'm well pleased you've 'found' mr wilson's music.
you'll also find that it affects many of us in a spiritual way,
but that doesn't transmogrify into any dogmatic credo.,
so please don't damn any of us
for not following your idiosyncratic take on the world.
to set the context of the stuff i posted in reply,
it was a very heartfelt response to your allusion to the illusion of a christian afterlife.
not a damnation,
but a 'rage against the dying of the light'
(dylan thomas).
for i'd visited my older bruv that very day.
and, though i wasn't at that time, to know it was the last time.,
it felt like a goodbye as he was at peace, secure in his faith and with what he saw as heading into heaven in the near future.
rob died about 30 hrs after i wrote here.
i wish no one ill.
nor do i want evangelising for any reason.
i don't share rob's belief and we were both at ease with each other's viewpoint.
both bonded as loved brothers,
both bound in the experience of an ending.
if he's found what he believed in,
then that's a bonus for my bruv.
but, enough of this glorious stuff'n'nonsense!
enjoy the deep humanity of brian wilson''s music.

(anyone who does bother to read this here,
thanks for the indulgence)
cheers

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT ANY RESPONSES OTHER THAN FROM BRIAN WILL BE IGNORED. I'VE NO INTEREST IN DEBATE, SO I WON'T BE READING YOUR ANTI-GOD POSTS. THANK YOU.

And there it is...the real word.  "Shut up...I don't and won't listen."  Thanks 'god'.  [Typical/Standard.]

capital.
plenty of capitals.
not a lot of grace.
i do hope s/he didn't bother reading my words,
else i'd be just so dismayed by the response.
doesn't bode to well for the 'truth' of convictions.
downright unchristian, if you ask me.
and, dear capital writing fingers in ears and blindfold across eye,
judged by recent sightings,
i reckon job has more chance of turning up and cracking a few jokes
or the turin shroud rising and wafting around the room
than mr wilson responding here.
i'd be only too pleased if he did do so.
only too pleased.
but i'm not holding my breath...
cheers

Poor old Job...dragged kickin and screamin' into the foray.  Hold while I order up a cage full of lions for a little old fashioned 'sport' and '1/2-time amusement'.  Popcorn anyone?

Thanks for uh, your prayers for Austin, Grace.  That was fast!  but. I think I credit Texas lawmen, though.  Supposedly religious zealots, if you listen to them, have a character advantage based on kindness and open-mindedness and positivity and what not, right?  But how many have close atheist friends?

80-20%.  That's how the evangelicals voted last time, in favor of, 'that vulgar man', as George Will said.   So, what exactly is the objective basis for your feelings of moral superiority over us bitter folk?   I simply don't see it.
