Looks like Nelson Bragg has left the BW band. He was replaced on the first night by Jim Laspesa, whom I believe will be his permanent replacement. Don't know why nelson left, but I suspect it might have something to do with pursuing his solo career...

Nelson was an integral member of the band, and will be greatly missed. That said, I can't afford to go to Brian shows anymore  (£100+ for "Pet Sounds" shows ad infinitum is out of the question for me). I hope that Nelson has the resources to continue playing in the U.K. occasionally with Anny Celsi, Duncan Maitland and Tony Poole. I also hope that as many people as possible here support him, as and when he does.

I wonder if Nelson left because [going into] 3 years of playing Pet Sounds was just, finally, getting a little old?  I'm just sayin'.  Anyway he's been a key part of the whole for a long while.  I join in - in terms of wishing him well.

Thanks Nels...you we're always great brother.

Well if this is the case, it's a bit sad for us fans.  Nelson, we loved your energy (as Paul often stated) and will miss that.  You were also very kind to fans who hung around before and after shows - we'll miss that, too.

Frank - Are you sure he's 'left the band', as opposed to a prior commitment/mini-tour he may have been on?

I'm no "insider", but as far as I do know, from reliable sources, Nelson's leaving is permanent.

I must just second these comments. Nelson was great, not just for his musical skills but for his enthusiasm and approachability with the fans. I'm sure he will be missed.

Bugs, sadly it's true. I checked his website yesterday and in his bio he says that he "was" the percussionist for Brian Wilson for 14 years.
After my second Brian Wilson show, I went as much for the band as I did to hear Brian. I ,too, got to meet Nelson at almost every concert I went to and so enjoyed talking with him. I also have both of his albums and they are fantastic!
After months of agonizing whether to go all-in for Nashville, I was just about to pull the trigger on a flight, accommodations and tickets, when I read that t Nelson was no longer with the band. Have to admit , I lost my enthusiasm, so I'm still on hold.
ALL the best to Nelson. Looking forward to more great music from you!!

Hang in there - and keep your money at the ready RC.  You may change your mind.  Over the years, the Brian Wilson Band line-up has experienced several changes - yet always, always, he finds a way of procuring the best musicians for his shows.  I recall missing Darian at one show, but it didn't damper the mood or sound as I'd expected.

Let's keep an eye/ear open/out for the feedback on these shows.  We will MISS Nelson, but perhaps Jim has much to offer.

I'm 15 minutes away from ticket sales starting for Santa Rosa, and am still psyched about using my credit card. [smile]

Pleased to hear that Nelson & co will be touring in the U.K. in August and early September (dates around Oxford and Brighton already set).

Mixed on this as we will all miss his presence, musicality and don't forget he was in on the vocals. But now he has the time to do his own thing(s).  Yes, yes, always out front and approachable by fans and well-wishers.  Now I have to get some of his music - which I don't have.

Hey all,

So he has left the band but I didn't see that one coming, and it doesn't look like many others did either. Not sure the exact cause, except that he has chosen to move on to other things. Yes, Jim is his replacement. Below is a comment I made elsewhere about Jim, then after that is one I sent to Probyn in regards to his departure, that he said he would forward on to Nelson:

The new guy is named Jim Laspera. He’s friends of Nick, Darian and Probyn from LA. Jim has played with people from the Kinks, Bangles, Cowsills, Smithereens, etc.

Aw!! Sorry to hear Nelson left. I did not see that one coming. I wish him all the best but he will be dearly missed. We loved him. Glad I got to meet him though. I was wondering where he was in the pics I saw and thought maybe I just didn’t recognize him since it's been a while or that he had a sub for this short leg. Nevertheless, like Scott, Taylor, Jeff, even Brian Ike, and all the others Nelson will always be a member of the Brian Wilson Band and his contributions over the last 13 years will never be forgotten, especially since if I recall his first tour was SMiLE.

I am sad about his departure. Things won't be the same but I'm sure it'll still be very good. As others have mentioned, he was always very open and sociable with the fans. Glad I was able to get his autograph and meet him a couple times. Can't wait to see all the good things he has in store for us and hope he will come back someday, maybe for some studio work or as a guest appearance. All the best to Nelson and his family!

It’s coming to a close anyway. Brian is too old for this to continue full tilt like it has been.
This band was incredible when it started and deserved so much credit for resurrecting Brian’s career,.
Nelson was a major contributor and won’t be easily replaced.

I remember seeing Nelson across the street from Massey Hall when BW played there in June of 2011. I was grabbing a bite - don't remember the place's name, add looked up to see Nelson sit down not three feet from me. He was quite occupied with his company and I was too timid to approach him. I learned through the years what a personable guy he is. He has been out there with the fans before curtain call. I have We Get What We Want as well as a graciously autographed copy of Day Into Night. I always loved to see Nelson's energy and hair flying (except when he cut it) back there on drums, bells, blocks, whistles and more.
Being a friend of Nick, Darian, and Probyn is the highest of recommendations so I will anxiously await Jim Laspera. Honestly, he's got big shoes to fill.
I will keep my eye open for Nelson should he come touring the eastern US.
Sail on, Sailor!

Wow, another one bites the dust. Nothing like when Taylor, Jeff and Scott were in the band. That was the best.
