...on the 'Rainbow Ends' album with Emitt Rhodes?  Was most of the recording done in 2015?  Been a BIG fan of Emitt's dating back to the early 70s..during and after college.  He's an outstanding talent.  Should have been a MEGA star.  His music is extraordinarily out of sight.

Must be something about Hawthorne California eh?  Can you share any light on this Nelson?  Probyn?

Hi Lee, I don't believe I have ever used this forum but someone sent me your question. i believe i can answer this one. Though I have peripherally known Emitt for years (his good pal Tim Horrigan is my original Beach Boys mentor, and I once had Emitt come out to see me being David Crosby in Andrew Gold's old Byrds of a Feather tribute), both Nelson and I got the call to record on ER's new album from the producer Chris Price, who is one of the new pop wunderkinds in what amounts to LA's pop scene. I don't know about Nelson, but I was there two days, recording in Emitt's garage studio, which is right across the street from his mom's old house in Hawthorne (Yeah, must be something about the air or water there!). I played trumpet, french horn, trombone and even slide guitar, some of which ended up on the mixing room floor. It was indeed done in 2015. Emitt is in dodgy health these days, and the debut show of his at the Grammy Museum in 2016 (Nelson was in the band) resulted in him being present but not singing at all, Chris Price himself taking the lead vocal. As far as I know, his 2016 SXSW show ended up being cancelled for similar reasons. I do hope we will see more of this reclusive genius before he gives up making music altogether. It was an honor to be part of this album, alongside so much current talent.

Welcome back in to BWdot-calm, Probyn!  It's the old forum spruced up a bit.  Nelson posts from time to time here.

Thanks to Lee for asking the question and now you have us doing some searching/looking.  I remember the (second album) thinking it was the debut:

Also, here's to MORE Wild Honey Orchestra!

See you on tour.

Glad you found your way back, Probyn.  I'm amazed at the web of talent that seemingly emanates around the Brian Wilson/Southern California universe, although the Emitt Rhodes connection appears to be coincidental (or is it? [wink] ).  Please - if you find the time (ha!), you will be most welcome to post more here...doesn't have to be about anything in particular (road updates, favorite venues...).  That goes for anyone in the (fantastic) band!

Lee - I've only vaguely heard of Emmit, though I'd likely have an a-ha moment should I explore further.  So please, from which work(s) do you recommend I begin...and is that work readily available?

-Doug

Thanks for taking the time Probyn.  Somehow I knew you would.  I appreciate the inside look you provided.  I join in on the chorus with 'the boys' welcoming you back.

Bugs...the first 3 albums are all excellent.  I still have some of the Vinyl...but floods put a dent in my entire collection back in the 80s and 90s [ya...2 of 'em]  I bought the Daisy Fresh From Hawthorne c.d.  That gives you lots of great variety.  The guy [ER] out Paul McCartneyed Paul McCartney in terms of doing almost everything on those classic albums.  Great Pop/Rock.

Hopefully Nelson will weigh-in too.

How lovely to see this thread. I bought Rainbow Ends last month and noted Probyn's horn solo. I love that track, it's my favourite on that album.
