Melissa Parker (Smashing Interviews Magazine): One of my very favorite songs, “God Only Knows,” was honored last year by BBC Music. Is that the greatest song you’ve ever written?

Brian Wilson: Probably my best, yeah.

Melissa Parker (Smashing Interviews Magazine): What were you thinking about when you wrote it?

Brian Wilson: I was thinking about my relationship with my girlfriend, and I wrote it for her.

First time I have ever read Brian mentioning this song was for his "girlfriend", besides the Marilyn factor at the time.

I think Brian says what ever pops in his head at the time.  He was obviously married to Marilyn a couple of years and quite honestly Tony Asher wrote the lyrics.  I like how he describes his humor in the interview.  i almost fell out of my chair....you gotta love it!

I agree that sometimes Brian will say whatever pops into his head.  I think there was one time where he even said that "God Only Knows" wasn't necessarily about a woman.  If that is the case the only other thing I think it could be about is Brian's relationship with music.

Words that jumped off the page for me...

Melissa Parker (Smashing Interviews Magazine): Do you ever see yourself retiring from music?

Brian Wilson: I don’t really know. Maybe this year. I’m not sure.

Yikes. Please don't!

I love this....

Melissa Parker (Smashing Interviews Magazine): What kind of a sense of humor do you have, Brian?

Brian Wilson: The funny kind. I’m kind of funny.

and Brian has been quitting or retiring since 1964. and sometimes when asked about a particular tune, he may be envisioning a different song than the one asked about and answer thusly unbeknownst to anyone. Example: Brian's reply here RE "God Only Knows" may be referencing "Surfer Girl".
