Just by chance, was at a magazine rack over lunch, and the new Rolling Stone is worth browsing at least.  Yes, subjective, but interesting to see what this new format/bigger/textured/new editor-even issue chooses as the essential 'must buy' Beach Boys' albums (to presumably recommend to the kids now who like...Ariana Grande and so forth.

Happy and gratified besides the obvious: 'Pet Sounds' and 'Smile Sessions' they cited 'Today' and 'Sunflower' and even 'Love You'.   Now, before you bellyache, Lee & kds, they said 'Holland' too.  I won't even get snarky about the 'Endless Summer' choice.  Why not?  what other BB's release has as many classic/must have songs?

then, under the next section, for looking deeper, you see again, mostly good choices such as 'Wild Honey'  and 'Pacific Ocean Blue'.  Yes, a little odd, out of such a catalogue to pick out the Boy George song from '85...   but still interesting to read someone thinking outside of the box.

...and you get a quick interview with Roger Daltry at the end.

John B - thinking alike.  I almost posted this a few hours ago. Two entire pages dedicated. It's labeled as "America's longest running band - from surf rock to studio symphonies and beyond" by Rob Sheffield.  The books are included and THAT is interesting how they describe Brian's memoir and the Mike book.  Whew!

The four Must-Haves are important: Today, Pet Sounds, Endless Summer (let the arguments begin) and The Smile Sessions. The Further Listening (this list includes Wild Honey)group of five albums including your much admired LY album, John.  The five albums in Going Deeper has Surfin' USA, Beach Boys' Party, Smiley Smile, Surf's Up and Pacific Ocean Blue.

Then there are the ten More Gems of songs NOT on the suggested albums.

One of my top five albums, All Summer Long, isn't even included - guess that's why ES is there instead.

thanks, Al, I was doing it from memory.

Yes, of course, 'All Summer Long' gets jobbed... and I suppose I could say why 'Surfin USA' and 'Party' but not 'Surfer Girl' or 'Little Deuce Coupe'? or why the most uneven album-- 'Smiley' but not the much better 'Friends'?  Cretan Welsh is wondering 'where's 20/20'?   but I don't need all my way or take my ball home, etc.
