good morning, class.
no fidgeting now,
pay attention.
who is making that buzzing noise?
well, stop it please, neville...

our lesson today is spanish dictation.
i would like you to pick up your pencils
and listen carefully to the words on this record.
george, don't do that...

it's in spanish.
you must translate it into english
in your best handwriting.
susan! we never bite our friends.
say you are sorry to sidney...

now here we go.
you needn't kiss him.
no, you needn't hug him!
susan, put him down!

let's get on with it.
the title is 'hasta morir'
the next bit, 'in vivo',
isn't part of the title,
it means 'live'.
that's because the song is played before an audience.

no fisticuffs, please.
she hasn't made any teeth marks, has she, sidney?
well then... don't fuss...

'Soy madera en los mares
voy flotando en la tempestad
profundo es el mar,
profundo lo mares

Perdí mi fe
hey hey hey
Soy la roca más alta
Tropecé, cuesta abajo voy
cuán hondo es el valle,
cuán hondos los valles

Mi alma se fue
hey hey hey

Soy la hoja en el vendaval
sé que pronto voy a volar
me llevan los vientos,
me llevan los vientos

Hasta morir
Que voy a ser hasta morir
Que voy a ser hasta morir
Que voy a ser hasta morir
Que voy a ser hasta morir
Que voy a ser hasta morir
Que voy a ser hasta morir...'

george, don't do that...

hazel, dear, i don't want to have to say it again
- please come away from the door.
why can't you?
well, you shouldn't have put your finger in the keyhole
and then it wouldn't have got stuck...

children, there is no need for everyone to come and have a look
just because poor hazel has caught her finger in the keyhole.
back to your work, please...

ok, now,
who has translated it like this?
'i am wood in the seas
i'm floating in the storm
the sea is deep,
deep the seas.

i lost my faith
hey hey hey

i am the highest rock
i stumbled, downhill
i'm on my way
how deep is the valley,
how deep the valleys?

my soul went
hey hey hey

i am a leaf in the gale
i know that i will soon fly
the winds take me up,
the winds take me up.

'til die
i'll be like this until i die...'

david,.
turn round, please, david.
right round.

use your hanky, please, david.
and again.
and again.
and now wipe.
thank you, david...

Eh, touché?

It also means "living", so it's a tautology.

Yeah the lyric translation is a  little bit off but it's still rather poetic.

It's not the Beach Boys, nor is it Europe, but there is a beach or two in the clip.

Hayley Westenra "Pokarekare Ana"

And no foreign language song week would be complete without Patea Maori Club's "Poi E".  A number one hit in New Zealand a very long time ago.

This version might rub shoulders more with American culture ... [smile]

As for Buzz, I thought that thing on wheels had been recycled, it's been so long.

Wish I had realised

Platinum is (slightly) more valuable than gold, St Kilda, and represents higher record sales - there's a thought, but I'll take your votes in the order they're listed.

Larry, I did have Frida in my selections at one stage but would she have won easily?

I don't think Frida would've won easily at all. I don't think she would have won. (Still, great excuse to look at her again.)

But what do I know?

I'm shaking my head in disbelief as to how these votes are turning out.

Early days.   I think I know what you're referring to though.
