This week we are doing fashion! Yes, it's all about songs with what styles they're wearing.

Here they are:

1.  All Summer Long by The Beach Boys.  "T-shirt, cut-offs and a pair of thongs".

2.  Short Skirt, Long Jacket by Cake.

3.  Handbags and Gladrags by Rod Stewart.

4.  Sharp Dressed Man by ZZ Top.

For copy/paste convenience:

All Summer Long/BB's.
Short Skirt, Long Jacket/Cake.
Handbags & Gladrags/Rod Stewart.
Sharp Dressed Man/ZZ Top.

Enjoy the week and I'll look forward to your comments and videos.

Cindy

I second John E's order.

Being from Texas, then living in a couple of different states, I used to be asked, "you're from Texas, so you must like ZZ Top."   That's enough for them to fall below Cake here!  Was never a fan, either of their music or their beards.    I know where La Grange is.  It's some mediocre small town you drive through and hardly notice.

'All Summer Long' is far and away the best here.   Pretty jazzy for rock n roll.  Original.  Classic.

Rod's song has very pretty instrumentation--piano and horns.

Gold: Handbags & Gladrags - Rod Stewart. Gets a bit tiresome if you hear too often. Used as theme to the original UK The Office TV comedy. (Not Rod singing though.)
Silver: All Summer Long/Beach Boys. Nice short, sweet, summer song.

Bronze: Short Skirt, Long Jacket/Cake. Never heard before. Not bad.  Nearly got silver.
Tin: Sharp Dressed Man/ZZ Top. Always thought it weird that (band member) Frank Beard ... didn't have one.

Gold - All Summer Long (The Beach Boys - 1964)
I’m over it. It’s been used twice before (once by you, Cindy) and finished 4th and 5th in Preliminary Finals. It’s one of those songs; good but not great. A rare Beach Boys song from this period, especially from the album that this is the title track of, that has never really done it for me. Re: the album cover, Wiki says: Jardine was unable to participate in the session due to illness. Sound familiar?

Silver - Handbags and Gladrags (Rod Stewart - 1969)
There are a few versions of this. This one features its writer, Mike D’Abo, on the piano. I’m particularly partial to the original release by Chris Farlowe, from 1967. The Jon English cover, from 1973, is also good. I have more respect for Rod Stewart now than I did in the late ‘70s period. I’ve read his autobiography. He’s a very savvy businessman. Last decade, he (and Buble) cornered the Mother’s Day CD market but aimed his concerts at the baby boomers and affluent couples. When it came time to buy Mum a gift, easy… $30 for a Rod Stewart CD. If you’re going to fork out $200+ on concert tickets, you’re going to spend it on your wife or squeeze, especially now you’ve just paid off the mortgage. Smart thinking, Rod.

Bronze - Short Skirt/Long Jacket (Cake - 2001)
Hadn’t heard it before. Diggin’ it. Like the use of the vibraslap. I thought the intro sounded very similar to something else, but I can’t put my finger on it. There are internet accusations of this song copying ‘Sweet Jane’ by Lou Reed. I’m wondering if the idea for the nah-na-na-nah-nahs in ‘Ladies Love Country Boys’ (Trace Adkins - 2006) came from hearing this.

Participant - Sharp Dressed Man (official video) (ZZ Top - 1983)
Cindy, that inner ‘80s Top 40 rock chick is showing again! Zed-Zed Top had a unique, identifiable sound. But everything I’ve heard from them had that same sound.

Cindy - my votes:
GOLD - Cake - LOVED that album when it came out and played it and played it.  Love the interplay between drums and guitar/bass.
SILVER - Brian takes the leap forward -- keeping up the Beatles.  Also, my favorite early Beach Boys album. Flash ahead to American Graffiti
youtube.com/watch?time_continue=251&v=Ds8cKxtqvZw
BRONZE - The Toppers, as in ZZ. I REALLY dislike 80's video and the music was made for the masses as it is now.  Still, this band carved it's niche, with beards and all.  Like the song.
TIN - Rodney.  Know the song and like it BUT the piano lick drives me crazy repeated over and over again and competes with the vocal. Enough already!!!!!!!

I would have put this over ZZ

Al, I saw American Graffiti at the theaters around 5 times.  I just loved it and also All Summer Long playing at the end.  Cake's song, SSLJ was used as the theme song for the tv show, Chuck (Instrumental only).  We just finished watching seasons 1 - 5 last night.  Good show!

Darren, I promise that I won't use ASL again!  LOL!  I know how you dislike themes, too.  ZZ Top does have that same kind of sound in all of their songs - just like I feel about Bruce Springsteen's later stuff.

St.kilda4ever - H & G's is never played on the radio 'round here.  I remember when I was a young girl, this song was on the top 40 and I've always liked it a lot.  I didn't realize that one member of ZZT didn't have a beard.  Oh, well.  Not every man can grow a decent beard and not every man looks good with one.

John B. - I didn't know that about La Grange or that it was even a town.  I live in Winterville, NC.  On property taxes here, they charge city taxes from Winterville, plus taxes on the big city of Greenville.  I remember getting riled up about that.  Winterville is barely a town - if you blink when you drive through downtown Winterville, you missed it.

John E. - Thanks for the videos and getting your votes in early.  Little Black Dress was one that I considered for this contest.

I'll go ahead and cast my votes:

Gold - All Summer Long by The Beach Boys.  This is my favorite style/look - t-shirt, cut-offs and a pair of thongs/flip/flops!  Really energetic and summery song by the Boys, too.

Silver - Handbags and Gladrags by Rod Stewart.  Loved this one when it was a new release and still do.  Definitely far from being overplayed on the radio waves.

Bronze - Short Skirt, Long Jacket by Cake.  Love the bounciness of it - cool song!

Tin:  Sharp Dressed Man by ZZ Top.  I agree with Darren - seems like the same tune with all of their songs.  However, I still like it, just not as much as the other three.

That's my take on it.

I was so sorry to hear about the passing of Nick Waluska, "Nicky Wonder".  He was young, so it's an even greater shock.  My sincerest condolences to his family and to The Brian Wilson band and all who had the privilege of working with him and knowing him.  R.I.P,

Carl Perkins -- "Blue Suede Shoes" (the original)
