Kia ora all of you.

This week we look at what they wanna do, and maybe even what we wanna do. Wanna new drug? Wanna break free? Wanna hold my hand?

We'll start this week with the boys, who just wanna make sweet music. I've put this up in the Battle before, but let's see how it fares against some big hits.  The Beach Boys, "All I Wanna Do".

Followed by a Bob Dylan song covered by The Byrds, "All I Really Want To Do".

Sheryl Crow, having a little fun with this hit smash hit song, "All I Wanna Do".

And finally, Heart reverts to correct grammar when they get to the lyrics, but display a dodgy moral compass in this wee story. "All I Wanna Do Is Make Love To You".

The Beach Boys, "All I Wanna Do".
The Byrds "All I Really Want To Do"
Sheryl Crow "All I Wanna Do"
Heart "All I Wanna Do Is Make Love To You"

Looking forward to seeing how the girls get on here.

I wanna vote this afternoon. Meanwhile, via the Wayback Machine:

The Ink Spots -- "I Don't Want To Set the World On Fire" (1941; "I just want to start a flame in your heart")
youtube.com/watch?v=6l6vqPUM_FE

Tony Bennett -- "I Wanna Be Around" (1963; sorry, but he does it much better than Brian)
youtube.com/watch?v=4ml_V7HNIsY

PS: Thanks to Mr. Peabody for inventing what's properly known as the "WABAC machine".

Gold -- The Beach Boys -- Gorgeous. Wikipedia says "it has been retrospectively cited as the earliest example of chillwave[1][2] and a precursor to the shoegazing genre.[2][3])". Who knew?

Silver -- The Byrds -- A very close second. Dylan could have been "The Sixth Byrd".

Bronze -- Sheryl Crow -- Very catchy. I heard this a lot.

Tin -- Heart --  I don't remember hearing this at all. Didn't appeal to me. Don't think it ever would.

Bob Dylan (Byrd #6) -- "I Want You"

I’ll tell you what I want, what I really, really want.

I wanna vote a three way tie right now, so I am going to go think it over again 🤔.

I like this challenge, bonnie.

Bonnie, I'll vote in early this week. Brian concert this Friday to look forward to. I like them all.

Gold wanna - Sheryl Crow - who would take up with a very complicated person and of course her battle. Always liked the song.

Silver wanna - I am a Heart fan. It's a weird premise for a song but she got what she wanted. Now the guy could sue for rights.

Bronze wanna - The Beach Boys.
Spacey and cool it is, right in the hippie era. Works so well on Sunflower, but it gets a bit repetitive at the end.

Tin wanna - too much of a good thing going back to the Dylan well (the sixth Byrd indeed).

This was a tight vote for me, Bonnie

Now if you had the Beat Brothers doing their American break out - it would have been a gap. Lisa refers to them as bugs.

We'll see who wins the BBC week - guys or girls.

Want vs. Need...need a little more time to see where I wanna place this week's contenders.

In the meanwhile, glad this didn't seem to be an issue at young master Tommy Tobben's extended Birthday Par-Tay! :

I have trouble NOT remembering this along with the original...behold the rare great cover:

EVERYONE can relate to this want:

C U soon!

Good morning, Bonnie!  Happy first week of Fall!

A good batch of songs here.

I'll go with:

Gold:  Heart.  I just love this one.  Ann Wilson has a fabulous voice and I just love everything about this one!

Silver:  Sheryl Crow.  One of her best ones.  Though frequently played over the airwaves, it's still a fave song for me.

Bronze:  Byrds.  It's ok, but I like the version of this by someone else and I can't think of who that was...

Tin:  The Beach Boys.  Sorry, Boys.  I like most of what they do, but this one goes into my "Meh" pile.

All I wanna do is win the lottery jackpot.

I want more songs that have "wanta" in their titles instead of "wanna". For those of us who pronounce the "t".

Billie Holiday -- "All Or Nothing At All"
youtube.com/watch?v=iALyrLFJjlE

Roxy Music -- "All I Want Is You"
youtube.com/watch?v=wqIp6Mq2qCA

Weezer -- "I Don't Want To Let You Go"

Wonder if anyone, including Weezer fans, including Weezer themselves, believe they should be given credit for 'writing' that chord sequence.   also, wonder if the theme is I don't wanna do this or I don't wanna do that, how long before we get to the Ramones?

I'm going to go opposite of Cindy Hood's order.

1) The Boys, one of the very best Mike songwriting contributions, "All I Wanna Do".   From one of the best Boy's albums, 'Sunflower'.

2) The Byrds, "All I Really Want to Do (is baby, be friends with you)"

very good cover and song.

3) Sheryl Crow  "All I Wanna Do"

this one used to be on frequent repeat in the kids' waterpark area of Gilroy Garden Park.  like the specific So-Cal reference.   solid song.

4). Heart  "All I Wanna Do is Make Love to You"

love Heart and especially An's voice, sure, just not the 80's version of them.  pretty much tries to take their originality completely away in favor of horrible 80's fashion.  what were they called: 'power balads'?  ugh.  Were they also selling sister Nancy's non-musical attributes?   I ...uh, suspect they were.   But Heart were complicent.  I forgive them, though.  But not nearly enough to help this song finish higher.

Rivers Cuomo did take credit and the royalties rolled in. Another from that album:

Weezer -- "(If You're Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To" (the video is open to interpretation)

Not very long:

The Ramones -- "I Wanna Be Sedated" (their best "wanna" song)
youtube.com/watch?v=l0usV_kf-Zc

One more classic:

Fats Domino -- "I Want To Walk You Home"
youtube.com/watch?v=cXQNMHox2_s

PS: I like this theme. It's as if all our desires are being satisfied.

Thanks to Larry, Al, Cindy and JohnB for your votes, which have been wonderfully all over the place, so it should be an interesting week. Great to see Deb and Lisa check in this early in the week too.

Deb, I never thought of The Spice Girls, you can't help but pick up on that energy.

Lisa, I'm listening to the Beatles as I type. Those guys could never spoil the party.

Larry, Most of the songs in this forum go WABAC, but that's because most of it was just better songs. I've tried Yeezy (or have I? Are they shoes?) and it's not to my taste. Some very nice contributions here but I'm going to need to find a copy of the Weezer song that will play here.

Cindy, great to see you gave heart your Gold.

Al, another Heart fan, and I had a feeling you'd give Sheryl your gold.

I'm going to vote before I see any more votes come in, this is an interesting competition so far.

GOLD - Sheryl Crow.  I've heard this song thousands of times but it still has the ability to catch my ear. It's just very very cool.

SILVER - TBB.  Interestingly, I loved this song much more when it was less familiar. Thanks for the information about it being an early version of chillwave, Larry.

BRONZE - The Byrds. I became a big Byrds fan in my late teens, right about when Sheryl released her 'All I Wanna Do'. This is by far the best version of this song and putting it here is such a shame.

TIN - Heart.  I like early Heart, but not so much their later stuff. This was a big hit and also packs a powerful punch soundwise, so its a double whammy (excuse the pun). The lyrics annoy me, however, and I get what JohnB says about it having that 80s power ballad sound.

Lisa -- The internet says "I Don't Want To Spoil the Party" was meant for Ringo to sing, him being a country music fan. I wonder why he didn't sing it. That is an excellent cover by Roseanne Cash, and an excellent cover of "Money" by the four lovable mop tops.

Hank Williams -- "I'd Still Want You"

For those that missed it...Macca was the only guest on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" last nite (Monday). Dedicating this in particular to the NZ hostess, Darren, D.A.N. and...heck, ALL international fans. Here's the silly opening:

and generally the rest of the episode on this playlist:
