Yep it's true. Who knew that "Bum Cakes" and "Listen To What The Flower People Say" would be better constructed and more lyrically substantial than 99.99999999% of mainstream pop. Now that's just sad.

The golden age of rock/pop music is definitely over.  Makes one want to cry.

GGH, you might get a kick out of checking back through the archives to Week 20 of Season VI, currently filed on page 6 of this BOTB forum index.

I forgot about that.  A lot of people really don't seem to like Let's Go to Heaven in My Car.

Same here, especially since I didn't get to live it!

You're a bit younger than me.  I came into this world at the tail end of it (I've always thought it ended in the late 80s / early 90s), but my the life I really became a real music fan, it was over.

Season 6, Week 20, ended this way:

Gold - That Thing You Do! (The Wonders - 1964) (76)
Silver - Let’s Go to Heaven in My Car (Brian Wilson - 1987) (58)
Bronze - Ouch! (The Rutles - 1965) (56)
Tin - (Listen to the) Flower People (Spinal Tap - 1967) (40)

"That Thing You Do!" was written by Adam Schlesinger, an award-winning songwriter and the bassist for Fountains of Wayne. "Let's Go to Heaven in My Car" was written by Brian Wilson and Gary Usher.

I guess "Ouch!" was written by Eric Idle and Neil Innes (who was in the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band). The actors who played Spinal Tap and Rob Reiner wrote "Flower People".

A few from the (underrated?) 21st century:

Arcade Fire, "Wake Up" ("Someone told me not to cry")

Lana Del Rey, "Born To Die" (Don't make me cry")

Jack White, "Weep Themselves to Sleep"

R.E.M., "Imitation of Life" ("I don't want to hear you cry")

PS -- For anyone wondering why Roy Orbison's "Crying" isn't competing this week, as previously planned, a last minute executive decision changed the lineup. That was partly because, as Darren informed me, "In My Room" and "Crying" competed against each other once before (in season 3, week 2, along with Nilsson's "Without You" and the Carpenters' "Rainy Days and Mondays".)

I thought this topic seemed familiar but didn't remember that it was *me* or that I had used Nilsson.  The other three probably give it away.

Edit: No, "crying" wasn't my actual theme but maybe someone else has used that.  Or it's my deja vu again (again).

I haven't seen this posted, but it's a rather long thread.

another wondrous 'everything connects' moment tonght,
here at fairport convention's 50th anniversary cropredy festival:
godley & creme's 'cry' performed live by
a veritable supergroup with a fine pedigree:
trevor horn, with lol creme and band
(first time they've performed it).
opening with 'two tribes' (dedicated to kim jung-il and trump),
both buggles hits,
not just 'video killed the radio star',
'slave to the rhythm',
a rocktastic 'owner of a lonely heart'
(which i always thought i hated!),
'kiss from a rose', (batman forever!),
lol's 10cc 'rubber bullets' and 'i'm not in love'
+ godley and creme's 'cry'.
and the hits kept on coming from a very prolific producer.
guests included russ ballard
(incl. the inevitable 'gawd gave rock'n'roll to usss')
and matt cardle, who excelled
- to witness a cropredy crowd singing 'relax!' was,
um, far from relaxing!
followed by a divine divine comedy set.
what good fun.
