It's done, defunct. Merely a memory. Dead as a doornail, kaput, finis.

Songwriters insist on writing about love, but other things end as well. Whatever it was, it's over.

It's the first time for three of these songs. It's only the second time for the Beach Boys song. Tom used it seven years ago.

The Everly Brothers -- "Crying in the Rain" (1962). Co-written by Carole King.

The Miracles -- "Ooo Baby Baby" (1965). Co-written, produced and sung by Smokey Robinson.

Neil Young -- "Like a Hurricane" (1977). This is a live version from 1982. The studio version is equally long. (Please ignore the funny guy to Neil's left.)

The Beach Boys -- "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times" (1966). Co-written with Tony Asher. It's the end of innocence? optimism? faith in one's fellow human beings?

Alternate "I Just Wasn't Made..." video just in case (the song proper begins around 15 seconds in):

The Everly Brothers -- "Crying in the Rain"
The Miracles -- "Ooo Baby Baby"
Neil Young -- "Like a Hurricane"
The Beach Boys -- "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times"

Bonnie's fun week isn't over yet. This mostly sad week is just starting. Please enjoy it until it's over.

Hopefully, IJWMFTT works in the UK, Larry.

A host wanted to use it two years ago, and we couldn't get a clip that would play there.

Hi Larry. Not sure who this bunch of geezers are, but they look important.

Gold - Crying in the Rain (The Everly Brothers - 1961)
Nice enough song but never in my fave Ev’s. It’s the only song Carole King and Howie Greenfield collaborated on together. The Ev’s were just about to do their stint in the Marine Corps reserves, Don was about to attempt suicide, and their career was plateauing with Warners after a major falling out with their publisher Wesley Rose. They’d lost their freshness and enthusiasm. Yep, depressing. And the British Invasion was just around the corner.

Silver - I Just Wasn’t Made for These Times (The Beach Boys - 1966)
By default. It’s in my collection, of course, but doesn’t do it for me. Have never understood the fascination with it.

Bronze - Ooo Baby Baby (The Miracles - 1965)
Did this get airplay here? I’ve never heard it before. Yes, he can sing, but it’s an unmemorable melody. I usually listen to each song continually for at least a day to give each one a fair hearing, especially if I don’t already know them. I played this more than the others, but I still have no emotional connection to it, and it just passed me by.

Participant - Like a Hurricane (live) (Neil Young - 1982)
Thank God that’s over. If I wanted to hear ‘Runaway’ for eight and a half minutes, I’d play the Del Shannon record three times in a row and still have time to spare.

Well, we're off to a slow start after 24 hours. A caution from Darren, two songs from bonnie (thank you, I liked the Jack White; didn't recognize the old people) and Darren only needing one day, becoming the first voter for a change. But the Northern Hemisphere has yet to weigh in. Only six days left before it's all over!

Larry, if you'd included 'I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better', that would've been my Gold by a long way. Written and, of course, sung by Gene Clark. It's one of my favourite records ever. We do it in our '60s tribute show. No-one in the audience knows it!

We pinched the choreo from this clip and our go-go dancers do it.

Great flip side too, 'All I Really Want to Do'.

Larry, yes, if I Feel A Whole Lot Better were in, instead of Neil, this would have been the most difficult vote of the year for me. It's still a tough one, so give me a day or two.

The Everly - Smokey - Brian songs are monsters (in good monster sense) to these ears, brain, and heart.. These woebegones need some serious listening. So don't despair.

Hi Al -- As usual, it was the fourth song that was difficult. I couldn't decide so went ahead with a personal favorite, even though it's an obvious oddball in the group and I had no idea how it would do. Being a big fan, I expect to put Neil in the top two.

Don't worry. I won't despair before the end. [smile]

Gold - Neil Young.  Won me over with this live version. Where's the sideburns?  Expected his tie to get caught in guitar strings.

Silver - Everly Brothers.  Probably should be Gold.  Just heard thsi too many times.

Bronze - Beach Boys.  Long gap between this song and Everly Brothers.

Tin - The Miracles.  Prefer the 'Tears' songs.

Darren, stkilda4 and t. bed: Thanks for your votes and assorted thoughts/videos.

Four years later, Neil was dressing down a bit. Maybe it was the problem with the tie.

Neil Young with sideburns in 1986 -- "Powderfinger"

Then I saw black,
And my face splashed in the sky....

Think of me
as one you'd never figured
Would fade away so young
With so much left undone

Three voters in two days so far. It's now 2:25 a.m. Eastern Standard Time and the polling place is open.

Two for anywhere it's dark.

Thank you D.A.N. There is Beverly Hills, of course, whose residents might as well be known as Beverlys.
