bonnie -- I didn't remember the Gotye, featuring Kimbra, song, but saw that the video has been viewed more than 1 billion times, and the song (#1 in many countries) and the video have received many honors. Shall I add that Kimbra is from New Zealand? I went with the cover because it seemed friendlier, and didn't start with Gotye singing weakly and displaying his foot and hairy leg.

As for the debatable-ness of Elliott Smith's song being better, no, I'm sorry, that isn't open for debate. [smile]

(Plus I hate it when someone comes along and reuses a favorite song or album title, like the Jayhawks did in 2000 when they released an album called Smile. The nerve! Sacrilege!)

In other news: The White Stripes, being forward-looking, "We're Going To Be Friends"

Bonus track: The Dandy Warhols, being backward-looking, "We Used To Be Friends"

Larry, please add that Gotye is from Australia. Melbourne. [biggrin]

We're understandably proud of him.

That song went to #1 in virtually every country around the world and Grammys including Record of the Year. [thumb]

I also LOVE Walk Off the Earth.

Their version of 'Happy' had me almost liking the song. Check it out...

My votes for the week.

GOLD - TBB.  You know we love this song, and you know we love this album. You just know us to well, little egg.  One of the Beach Boys songs that sounds most like the Beatles to me.  Sixties psychedelic pop at its best.  I just don't know what they were thinking with that album cover.

SILVER - SNC. I like it better than the original.  Sweet, and these melodies are just gorgeous. Thanks for the introduction, I'll be taking a peek at more of their work.

BRONZE - War.  There are a lot of versions of this song, most of them pretty decent.  This is great, it's really cute, but borderline annoying. I quite like this version, but just the once, mind you.  Any version of this song on repeat could be easily be used as a torture device.

TIN - Queen.  Never really feeling it with Queen, except for the odd (and completely odd) out of body experience with Bohemian Rhapsody.  Four minutes and thirty-one seconds of not really listening, sorry.

Love the Paul McCartney track, although I had to find a live copy.  It would have made an easy silver this week.

surprised no one's included the todd rungren track,
so i'll add the great (and greatly missed) robert palmer's version:

all a bit too saccharin for me, really,
at least you didn't include my dear chum stevie k's
'a friend like you'
(sorry, stevie, even though a co-write with bw
the recording is soppy.
mostly 'cos of macca's contribution, to be honest
- though if you'd heard the version the brighton beach boys arranged
for the show we put together in brighton with stevie,
you'd realise it's not a bad song at all!).

gold: 'friends'
- impossible not to offer top slot to this one.
what a luvverly album altogether
(with 2 very fine stevie k cowrites with dw
'be still'
 and 'little bird' included)
and what a fab track.

silver: 'why can't we be friends'
- by no means the best of war's repertoire,
though i've really liked a lot of what they've done
and seen some groovy live shows,
so know they're a fine funk outfit.

bronze: 'friends will be friends'
- irksome.
the kind of queen song that reminds me why find them tiresome.
nothing wrong with the quality of their output.
except they annoy me immensely far too often.

tin: 'you're my best friend'
- what's worse than an irksome queen song?
a cover of a queen song!

now, let this old grouch patter off into the sunset...

Gettin' in at practically the last minute, but here are my selections:

Gold:  Friends/Beach Boys.  A nice one from the early years.

Silver:  Why Can't We Be Friends/War.

Bronze:    Friends Will Be Friends/Queen.

Tin/Pewter: You're My Best Friend/Straight No Chaser.  Much prefer the Queen version.

My final answer.

I still haven't replaced my Mac and still using my son's laptop and still can't figure out the copy/paste thing.

So, another great friend song would be Waiting On A Friend/Rolling Stones.

"They're not gonna catch us. We're on a mission from God".

The Clapper (who is winding down the career due to hearing issues - correct?)

Paul, I completely forgot that it was Todd and always thought it a H and O song  Todd sounds good still.

With Friends In Low Places -  I heard the original before it was um, "taken".  A Connecticut songwriter wrote performed it as we had "song nights".  The exact chorus was taken - with the low - "low places". We had other pro writers come and tell us that if they liked something ....   Always protect your work.

Paul Simon (76) has said his next tour will be his last. Here are the lyrics to Simon and Garfunkel's "Old Friends" from Bookends, released 50 years ago next month.

Old friends, old friends,
Sat on their parkbench like bookends
A newspaper blown through the grass
Falls on the round toes
of the high shoes of the old friends
Old friends, winter companions, the old men
Lost in their overcoats, waiting for the sun
The sounds of the city sifting through trees
Settles like dust on the shoulders of the old friends
Can you imagine us years from today,
Sharing a parkbench quietly
How terribly strange to be 70
Old friends, memory brushes the same years,
Silently sharing the same fears

Having sat on a park bench with an old friend or two, I can say that being 66 or 76 is also strange. Quoting the Talking Heads lyric:

And you may find yourself
Living in a shotgun shack
And you may find yourself
In another part of the world
And you may find yourself
Behind the wheel of a large automobile
And you may find yourself in a beautiful house
With a beautiful wife
And you may ask yourself, well
How did I get here?

and, to submit an oblique song of some despair
rather than any jollity
(lacking the comic irony of 'le moribond'
better known by its dreadful translation as 'seasons in the sun')
here's jolly jacques brel
with lyrics latterday scott walker would've loved to tease us with
(oops -original link was wrong):

of course there are the wars in ireland
and tribes without music
of course all this isn't at all endearing
america is no more
of course money has no smell
but no smell goes up my nose
of course we walk on flowers
but... to see a friend cry!

of course there are our defeats
and then there's death at the very end
our bodies already bow our heads
surprised to still be standing
of course unfaithful women
and murdered birds
of course our hearts are losing their wings
but... to see a friend cry!

of course these cities worn out
by these fifty year old children
our powerlessness in helping them
and our loves that have toothache
of course time that goes too fast
loving oneself filled up with walnuts
truth that avoids us
but... to see a friend cry!

of course our mirrors are joined up
neither the courage to be a jew
nor the elegance to be black
we think of ourself as candlewick we are only tallow
and all these men who are our brothers
so much we are no longer surprised
that for love they lacerate us
but... to see a friend cry!

Paying a "friendly" visit...

GOLD -- WAR, Why Can't We Be Friends? -- I've always enjoyed this...right down to the contradiction between group name and song title. [cool]

SILVER -- Beach Boys, Friends -- They nearly ended up with Bronze - and vice versa for the Bronze recipient. What inched it ahead was the whimsical, wallowing bass harmonica, presumably played by session musician Tommy Morgan. Fun fact: I've been watching vintage "The Twilight Zone" episodes, and lo and behold, Mr. TM got a big end credit  for that ep's harmonica-based background music. How do you like them apples?

BRONZE -- SNC, You're My Best Friend -- Nice to see they won't have a complete sweep of Tin. They haven't had as much new stuff in the past year or two (at least of what sticks as nicely in my noggin). Interestingly enough, they also have a cover of "Happy" (I'd agree Walk Off the Earth - who indeed are a Canuck alt/indie band - turned it up a notch, and for me, Weird Al's "Tacky" is up there, too).

PEWTER/TIN -- Queen, Friends Will Be Friends -- Nice lyrics. I like certain Queen stuff but for whatever reason, this didn't hold me as well as others.

Good week, Jen! How about we go to the movies with our friends...and some fun alternate lyrics? (Gotta like the "Har-ri-son Ford/Har-ri-son Ford..." harmony intro for "Raiders of the Lost Ark"):

PS: Apologies to previous (and future) hosts. I might be a little less regular in casting a vote, but also won't have time to host my own week, so that'll balance out fairly.

GOLD (an easy one) for Beach Boys

(distant) BRONZE for Queen
(BTW, the phrase "Freddie and the boys" should be reserved for THIS lot, IMHO)

TIN (and well deserved) to Straight No Chaser

A couple friendly songs...

The Kinks - All of My Friends Were There

Lovin' Spoonful - Bes' Friends
