Happy Without You (The Strangers - 1968)

Stay (While the Night Is Still Young) (Ol’ 55 - 1977)

Gypsy Queen (Country Radio - 1972)

Endless Harmony (The Beach Boys - 1980)

Happy listening.

Some of you may not have heard a couple of these before, so please feel free to deliberate all week before casting your votes (and comments).

There is no theme, so please don’t look for one.

And please, try not to tie your votes. Four songs – how hard can it be?

I’ll be back with the results next week.

For copying and pasting purposes:

Happy Without You (The Strangers)
Stay (While the Night Is Still Young) (Ol’ 55)
Gypsy Queen (Country Radio)
Endless Harmony (The Beach Boys)

Sorry Darren.  Tied up for most of the week so I have to do this now.

And NO your easy to copy and paste list is not as 'orderly' as it's been for the previous 2 battles.

4 pretty good songs really...although I hear a rather obvious winner...so no 4-way tie this go-round.

GOLD-Gypsy Queen (Country Radio)  Something special about it.  Well written,  Well performed.  Believable.  Valid.  Authentic.  Brilliant.

SILVER-Endless Harmony (The Beach Boys)  The first 2:15?  Close to a waste of time...then at 2:16 the MAGIC kicks in, sends that good shiver rushing down my back and the song is saved.  In fact it begins to excel.  But it's not enough to compete with the far more well conceived gold standard for the week.

BRONZE-Stay (While the Night Is Still Young) (Ol’ 55)  Nice little ditty.  Rather predictable...but not in a bad way.

Sadly...TIN-Happy Without You (The Strangers)  Nice, short and to the point.  Odd sounding lead vocal.  Perhaps it's the production which hurts it some.  Sounded like it was added from afar.  Doesn't mesh well.  But still...a decent effort.

And from that same 'theme'...

No theme?  Perfect - I've been trying to slip Nicole Atkins in.  I've been listening to her the past month.

Promise - no ties this week.

Al, that Nicole Atkins clip is a little quirky.

Couldn't pass up the opportunity, considering it's Brian's board.

bonnie - your dirty youtube clip won't play on uk computer...
lee - ta for the brinsley schwarz addition.
a firm favourite band (and just look at the hair!).
i'll merge that with your csny title and contribute:

and raise you a nick lowe solo stroll through the same song,
40 years after the brinsleys played the very first glastonbury festival:

Gold - The Beach Boys - Dodgy lyrics aside, Endless Harmony is a high point to a crummy album.   Especially once Carl's vocals kick in.

Silver - Country Radio

Bronze - Ol 55

Tin - The Strangers

Gold: Happy Without You (The Strangers) Popular Aussie band from '60s. John Farrar went on to write for Olivia Newton-John and extra songs for Grease. Production might be dated but catchy song with great harmony.

Silver: Stay (While the Night Is Still Young) (Ol’ 55) Popular Aussie band from the '70s.  Named after the Eagles song.  Again - loving the harmonies.

Bronze: Gypsy Queen (Country Radio) More Aussie music from '70s. Like it - don't love it. Lead singer Greg Quill ended up as a journo in Canada.

Tin:  Endless Harmony (The Beach Boys) Well when it comes to harmony doesn't come much better than the Beach Boys ... but this didn't grab me

Tough week, as all the songs could be the same rank for me, except for Happy Without You which was definitely an odd man out for me.

Gold – Gypsy Queen (Country Radio). Rather good.  Better than the rest.
Silver – Stay (While the Night Is Still Young) (Ol’ 55). This one I like.  Not stellar, but good harmony, melody and generally ok.
Bronze – Endless Harmony (The Beach Boys). I'm not in the KTSA cult, but the 2:15 to 2:50 interval is quite nice.
Tin - Happy Without You (The Strangers). I'm not fond of the style, and really not a fan of the lead vocal.  It sounds to me like the guy is singing with marbles in his mouth and from behind a door or something.
Here’s a “theme”.  I didn’t look for it, it found me:

Been a Brinsley fan since my 2nd last year of high school Paul...back when Hymn to Me was new.  Always kept an ear on Nick...and Dave Edmunds from that time on.  Then there was THIS band...from a year or 2 earlier...

Then there's this one...

and even older...grade 9 I believe...

Note to Cindy...re: 'final answers'.  I'd say I've changed my votes maybe 3 times over the years.  I bring it up because I almost dropped the Beach Boys down a notch this week.  After all...the song is really only 55 seconds long.  But what a great 55 seconds they are.  So I left it.  2:15 WASTED Bruce!!!  WHAT THE 'HECK'?

And Al!!!  Nicole sounds great...for a 'crazy' person. -)

I know there's no theme, but there's no shortage in rock and roll of great songs about gypsies.

Here's a gem from the MK 3 lineup of Deep Purple called "The Gypsy"
