Winner (by a length): GOLD finish for The Beach Boys. SMiLE!

Place: SILVER The Osmonds. I wasn't aware of this one in its day, actually, not until this century. I'd have been too prog rock snobby in 1972 to have liked it, but it's actually great, especially when considering the source.

Show: BRONZE to Ross Ryan The voice is solid....but the song is not.

Also ran: Rusty TIN for Kasey Chambers. Not a voice that I find pleasant...and the fake twang doesn't help.

Here's a couple not so obvious ones:

24 Hour Party People - Happy Mondays ("you been running around the racetrack, put that mudder to bed")

Holly Up on Poppy - XTC

This contest has for me a very easy #1 (The Beach Boys) and #4 (The Osmonds).   I actually remember the Osmonds songs favorably, such as "One Bad Apple" even 'Sweet & Innocent' and 'Burning Bridges' and  'Go Away Little Girl' certainly when Donny's voice changed, I like those recordings, 'Deep Purple' with Marie, 'Morning Side of the Mountain', and 'Come on Marianne'.  etc.  .  But 'Crazy Horses'.  Just terrible.

So, the contest becomes who is #2 and who is #3.

We gotta a cliche'd folkie and a novelty/infantilized female singer, both stuck in their time periods.  I know, I know, neither song is that bad, and neither singer is so terrible.  So...my choice for the numbers tally is:

  1. The Beach Boys

infinite divide...

  2. Ross Ryan
  3. Kasey Chambers

 4. The Osmonds

What a horse race!

My wagers are:

GOLD:  Beach Boys for Cabinessence.  The Boys easily take the gold slot this week.  Love the Carl Wilson vocals!

SILVER:  Ross Ryan for Pegasus.  Pleasant enough.

BRONZE:  Kasey Chambers for Pony.  The intro sounds much like the intro to Fever.  Cute little ditty.

TIN/PEWTER:  The Osmonds for Crazy Horses.  I remember this way back in the battle.  This one has got to be the most obnoxious song, even surpassing Who Let The Dogs Out by the Baha Men.

My final answer.

Here are a few:

Here's a story about some nefarious 'rude bwoys' who 'fixed' a race WAY back when at Caymanas Park in Kingston Jamaica.  Sorry for Ross's terrible luck.  But Long Shot had to bite the dust.

Now wasn't THAT fun... ... ...cubed?

I'm not sure why I know this song....it wasn't a hit, and my family didn't own it. But I used to hear it somewhere when I  was maybe 4 or 5? Haven't thought about it for decades.

Spike Jones & the City Slickers - William Tell Overture (Horse Race/Beetle Bomb)

Aerosmith "Back in the Saddle Again" (1976).  (Few of these ladies are dressed appropriately for riding.)

Goldenhorse "Run Run Run" and "Out of the Moon". (2005).

Elton John and Pavarotti.  "Live Like Horses".

It's a heavy track but the hometown favourite is proving a mudlark.

It's currently three and a half lengths ahead of the field.

'Pony' and 'Crazy Horses' are still neck and neck.

'I Am Pegasus' has grown a leg and is threatening for a place.

Thanks for the placing your bets, Verden, t, kds, John B and Cindy.

Larry, neither of those songs are on my list of pre-race candidates.

t, nice to see some racetrack terminology.

Neither of those records are on my list. I take it the second one is about a rocking horse.

John B, I'm a bit partial to 'Puppy Love', myself.

Cindy, yes, it's the second up race for 'Crazy Horses'. Pete Simpson had it running back in Season I when it came in 2nd place in the equal-closest week (six points separating first and last) we had until last season.

I wish the first clip wasn't blocked in the US.

Here is a poor quality copy you can see:

'Wildfire' came in 2nd in the previous Cup celebration week I ran, in Season II.

You gave 'Run for the Roses' your Gold, 'Wildfire' your Silver, 'Long Tall Texan' your Bronze, and the eventual winner '(Blame It) On the Pony Express' your Tin.

That version you've posted of 'Wildfire' is a ring-in.

It's actually a re-recording Michael Martin Murphey did in 1997.

This is the original (and the one that raced in Season II), when he known as just Michael Murphey:

Cindy, t had already listed the Stones version of 'Wild Horses'.

Personally, I much prefer this stunning version. It's obvious from the YouTube comments that I'm not alone.

The KT Tunstall track isn't on my list.

Lee, t and bonnie, thank you for songs. None of them were on my list.

'Back in the Saddle Again' by Gene Autry is on mine, bonnie!

Found this clip of Ross Ryan from back in his heyday.

It occurs to me he was in the Cat Stevens mould.

I sure wish you Americans could view these!

(Pony – Kasey Chambers, 2004; proof you can lip-sync even with a bolt through your bottom lip!)

(Not Pretty Enough – Kasey Chambers, 2002; Kasey’s big #1 hit)

(Barricades and Brick Walls – Kasey Chambers, 2001)

Here are Nancy & Lee covering Kasey:

(Barricades and Brick Walls – Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazlewood, 2004)

(Rattlin’ Bones – Kasey Chambers & Shane Nicholson, 2008)

Lee, that was interesting.  Quirky-Rastafarian must be your second name.

Darren, too much Kasey.  But that's a good name for a horse.

Gold to Osmonds.  Used to put that on for my friends and say 'guess the group'?  Surprised when they found out who it was.  (Not a hit in Australia).  Silver to Aussie boy Ross Ryan aka Horse Ryan ... well that's what his name means!  Bronze to Aussie girl Kasey Chambers with Pony.  (Memories of a very funny Seinfeld episode.) And next whatever that other song was by the Beach Boys. No Mr Ed theme??

One of these groups has been in the Battle. I've posted something by another of these groups. That covers two of the three.

Mahavishnu Orchestra, "Pegasus / Opus 1 / On the Way Home To Earth", Visions of the Emerald Beyond, 1975 ("Pegasus" is the first 1:50)

The Allman Brothers Band, "Pegasus", Enlightened Rogues, 1979 (After they get going, they sound a lot more like the Mahavishnu Orchestra than I expected)

Blonde Redhead, "Equus", Misery Is a Butterfly, 2004

Just past the 1600m mark and it’s the heavily backed favourite ‘Cabin Essence’ in the lead by nearly four lengths.

Second is ‘Crazy Horses’, a very narrow margin from ‘Pony’, with ‘I Am Pegasus’ caught three deep and bringing up the rear.

Thank you for placing your bets, stkilda4ever (first visit to the betting ring in over three years), DAN and Pete.

stkilda4ever, you asked for it:

I wrote to the late Alan Young about eight years ago and got a nice reply from his son.

I always found the Mr Ed premise too hard to believe.

I mean, I could accept the talking horse bit, but it was too far-fetched that a guy would spend that much time in the barn with his horse when he had a wife inside the house who looked like this.

Connie Hines

bonnie and Larry, those tracks are not on my list (of pre-race nominations)
