Khe Sanh (Cold Chisel - 1978)

Rain (Dragon - 1983)

Hey, St. Peter (Flash and the Pan - 1976)

Wontcha Come Out Tonight (The Beach Boys - 1978)

No theme.

Just strong songs from three newcomers to the Battle and a latter day Wilson/Love Beach Boys beauty that has yet to feature here.

My sincere thanks to the team for giving these clips the green light. Still, if any don't work, please let me know. They have substitutes that do.

I'll post the promo clips for the three newcomers below in a separate post. (They show the artists but the sound quality in the clips above is superior.)

Happy listening.

Please feel free to deliberate all week before casting your votes (and comments).

I’ll be back with the results next Monday.

(sound is a re-record from 1980)

(features Terry Chambers on drums in promo clip. Todd Hunter - writer and bass player - has told me it's Kerry Jacobson on the record.)

(entertaining but poor audio)

Gold...Flash and the Pan.  It's just a cut above ... The best song of the week by a head and 2 shoulders.
Silver ... Dragon.  Clearly a decent tune.  Good harmonies.  A solid second.  Just not quite up to Flash and the Pan.
Bronze...Khe Sanh.  Not sure what I was expecting but when the song swung into action as a kind of singalong sound I was disappointed.  Still...all in all...not bad.
Just out of the running...Beach Boys.  Sounds like a parody.  And to think...4 1/2 years earlier they were still so forward thinking.  Sha Na Na with plastic pails and shovels.  Booooooo!!!

Darren, can the rest of the world handle being upside down for another week?

More Dragon.

The 4th of July celebrations are over, but the searing heat and humidity are still hangin' around.

I'll go with:

Gold - Beach Boys for Wontcha Come Out Tonight.

Silver - Flash of the Pan for Hey, St. Peter.

Bronze - Dragon for Rain.

Tin/Pewter - Khe Sanh by Cold Chisel.

My final answer.

for whatever reason, my ultra-sensitive government job firewall is allowing YOUTUBE this morning.  ok.

not to Lee, but to me, this is another Larry-Franz contest week where all the songs are really good and whichever one I pick as 4th place is only because the rules say I have to have one last.  But, I'll do my best.

1)  'Woncha Come Out Tonight'

maybe MIU was not a very accomplished LP, but the 'Love You' and 'Adult Child' haters should own up to their part in causing it.

2)  'Rain'  by Dragon

I'm going to award 2nd place to this one, based on the chorus.   because

3) 'Khe Sanh' by Cold Chisel  does not really have one.

Still, I'm not sure 'Changing of the Guards' by Bob Dylan does either, and that is also a great song. 'Lily, Rosemary, & the Jack of Hearts' also comes to mind.

4) 'Hey, St. Peter' by Flash in the Pan

not marking down for the spoken word part, or the familiarity of having heard this before--unlike the other two songs.  Just comes down to conventionality, that I base my mark down upon.

thanks for all good and interesting songs this week.!

My votes go in the order presented this week.

Cold Chisel takes the Gold because it's a great song.

Dragon takes Silver, also very familiar, and a very good song.

Bronze to Flash of the Pan, who don't do anything for me. More of a toilet pan.

Tin goes to the Boys because this one makes my toes curl.

Gold - Beach Boys - From the underrated MIU album.  They'd never again hit the heights they hit in the early 70s, but IMO this album was a vast improvement over the previous two

Silver - Dragon

Bronze - Flash in the Pan

Tin - Cold Chisel

why do I suspect that Cold Chisel would fare higher with kds, if they had worn Halloween costumes in their video?

...but I kid kds...

Re: "MIU," other than one absolute classic Brian song "My Diane," I will admit to liking 'Matchpoint of Our Love," "Sweet Sunday Kind of Love," what else?  'Pitter Patter' ain't bad.  Other than lead singer for 'My Diane,' not much Dennis on there, is there?  Most Dennis fans will notice that he had more leads on 'Love You' and 'Adult Child'.  I think Dennis was kicked off MIU by virtue of either a Stan Love sucker punch or some TM new age rule he wasn't following closely enough...
