Hello, fellow hi-fi-vers.

These are my gifts to you this week.

Emmylou (First Aid Kit - 2012)

Stevie (Saint Etienne - 2000)

Grace Kelly (Mika - 2007)

Brian Wilson (Barenaked Ladies - 1992)

Happy listening.

As some of these songs may be new to voters, I’m hopeful people might take several days listening before casting their votes (and comments).

And please, try not to tie your votes. Four songs – how hard can it be?

I’ll be back with the results next week.

For copying and pasting purposes:

Emmylou (First Aid Kit)
Stevie (Saint Etienne)
Grace Kelly (Mika)
Brian Wilson (Barenaked Ladies)

 Here's my order:

1. First Aid Kit

2. Bare Naked Ladies

3. St. Etienne

4. Mika

I tried writing some comments, but lost them twice. So that's it for now!

Yes, some new ones to mull over but I can get this done by tomorrow. I know my Gold and my Tin.

So ….. The Yellow Tape and Steven Page about it:

The REAL Emmylou and the Hot Band:

Emmylou likes it!

I’m only familiar with one so far. I will enjoy mulling over the other three.
Meanwhile, here’s Brian Wilson covering “Brian Wilson” (or at least a snippet.)

Three excellent songs and a readily apparent, crowd-pleasing theme! Intriguing.

Some fine tuneage this week, Darren! I'm going to have a real battle deciding my gold vs silver, and my bronze vs tin. Definitely more listens needed before voting.

Your "Stevie" entry this week reminds me that I need to go back and listen to all of the Caroline Now! tribute album some more. Only played it a few times when I first got it a few years ago.

Al, that First Aid Kit video with Emmylou in the audience was quite touching. Good find! Your others by Emmylou and BNL were good too.

Deb, did it take some guts, or at least a bit of self-deprecating humor, for Brian to sing a bit of BNL's "Brian Wilson"!

Two of these were new for me and I think one of them is great, but listening more isn't going to change my vote.

Gold -- Barenaked Ladies -- Classic, and culturally and emotionally significant, although the straitjacket in the video was dumb.

Silver -- St. Etienne -- One of my favorite Brian covers, including the spooky ending. I thought about using it for the "It's Been Covered" week but it seemed a little too unconventional.

Bronze -- First Aid Kit -- Never heard of them. Beautiful song, beautifully sung. It would be #1 for me some weeks. I'm going to check them out. (They've released four albums since 2010.)

Tin -- MIKA -- Born Michael Holbrook Penniman Jr.. He's energetic. "Grace Kelly" was #1 on the UK singles chart in 2007, but it's not for me.

Two different Carolines.

Fleetwood Mac -- "Caroline" from Tango in the Night (1987)

Harry Nilsson -- "Caroline" from Nilsson Sings Newman (1970)

More from Caroline.  It's the quirky take on Brian music.

Less quirky:

Since Emmylou really never appears in the BOTB's, some good opportunity:

just back from mini-vacation, Dream Inn on Cowell's Beach at Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, 80F heated pool overlooking the ocean--as do all of their rooms w/balconies.  Their restaurant is named for Jack O'Neal, who grew up in Long Beach, moved to SF, and invented the wetsuit about the time that Dick Dale & Brian were popularizing surfing (in a warmer climate).  Where do I stand on the (unequal faux-battle) question?  of course, Santa Cruz loses to Huntington Beach as 'Surf City'.  duh.  I checked: the water temp. at Huntington was up to 70F yesterday!   But Santa Cruz is fun, too.  Big Dipper is currently the U.S.' 5th oldest roller coaster).

I absolutely love two of these songs, not 'Stevie' or the guy whining about Grace Kelly, but I need to listen more times to all of these and vote tomorrow.  thanks for patience (like the northern CAL surfers have in 50's degree ocean water! )...

Thanks a lot to the first batch of voters - John E, Larry and DAN.

John E, I recalled you mentioning First Aid Kit in the past, so I'm glad you got your votes in.

Larry, I'm rapt you liked the songs. But I was sure you'd posted some clips from First Aid Kit in the past. I did a search on 'First Aid Kit' in BOTB and, indeed, you have a couple of times and discussed them.

I've put The Lion's Roar on a few times at night, but I've yet to discover another 'Emmylou' in their catalogue. If you do, I'd love to hear (about) it.

It seems the first time the sisters were introduced into the conversation here was by Pete Simpson during my Week 37 in Season IV called 'it's strictly a family affair'. Looking back, that's not surprising. Pete had a handle on those Nordic groups and his contributions here are missed. That was the first I also heard of First Aid Kit and 'Emmylou'.

They did a gig here about four years ago and I missed it because I was working.

DAN, I'm with you; 'Grace Kelly' is an ear worm. (Welcome back, by the way. How was the UK?)

Al, thanks for posting the Polar Music Prize banquet clip. I've already prepared my notes and was going to post the same clip along with the comment: "Here they are playing the song to the actual Emmylou… nice if you forgive the voyeuristic camera".

Keep listening, folks. Looking forward to your thoughts in your own good time.

Darren, this is why I wanted to include really a legendary "game-changer" in her own right who may not have ever been part of the battles prior in the REAL Emmylou. You have the acts that you have included but none could ever hold a candle to what Emmylou Harris has done and accomplished.  That was quite a clip to see her response, but the performance is quite incredible by FAK.  This has slightly changed by entrants for next week.

And so, I'll vote and it has changed twice since yesterday but I'll lock.

Gold - To First Aid Kit - I love the vocals but the chorus is just so amazing, not to mention the verses.  I love her guitar pattern on the live take. Here's to singing together and Johnny too!

I'll be your Emmylou and I'll be your June
If you'll be my Gram and my Johnny too
No, I'm not asking much of you
Just sing little darling, sing with me

Silver - By the slimmest of margins to the Barenakeds'.  That bass line and playing is insanely good.  There is some waste in the entire song and why the silver to the no-waste in the Gold song.

Bronze and got changed due to DAN's mention of hanging in there.  I also hated the beginning of MIKA but it got surprisingly better.

So the tin to the quirky take on Brian's music and Caroline Now with Stevie by St. Etienne.  Is it a take-off on anything?  The dreamy musical sequence is dreamlike but puts me to sleep.

The image of Emmylou listening will always be seared.

Nice week of some things not heard before.

Darren -- Yes, Pete Simpson posted First Aid Kit's "Emmylou" in season 4, and I posted them out in the woods covering Fleet Foxes in season 5, with the comment:

Quote:
First Aid Kit are new to me. They sure don't sound Swedish. I read that they became famous through this cover of the Fleet Foxes song (4 million views so far). Which is like the way Lily and Madeleine got known through YouTube and Reddit.

First Aid Kit -- "Tiger Mountain Song" (5.6 million views now -- another testimony to the power of the BOTB!)
youtube.com/watch?v=HMrqBldlqzA

Then I posted "Emmylou" in season 8's "Girls" week, which I'd completely forgotten. The thing is, I didn't even remember them doing the song, let alone their name. (I blame our president.)

A favorite (I had trouble remembering this band's name and the song's name, but aside from that, everything's fine -- except our president):

Rank and File -- "Amanda Ruth" (1982)

I like this one:

Nowhere near ready to vote. I think I have more homework to do!

In keeping with "the theme".
