It's like when the optometrist says "Which is clearer (or preferable)?"  #1 or #2, #3 or #4, #5 or #6, ... ?

1)  The Secret Sisters -- "Black and Blue" (2014)
youtube.com/watch?v=wWA2uQPwgto

OR

2)  Elliott Smith -- "Bottle Up and Explode!" (1998)
youtube.com/watch?v=skE1ghsGK2s

------

3)  The Rolling Stones -- "Please Go Home" (1967)
youtube.com/watch?v=Tk9EwTzBDVs

OR

4)  Electric Light Orchestra -- "Don't Bring Me Down" (1979)
youtube.com/watch?v=-rD-0tlGGPo

------

5)  Sting -- "Fields of Gold" (1993)
youtube.com/watch?v=KGED47FKXE4

OR

6)  The White Stripes -- "Blue Orchid" (2005)
youtube.com/watch?v=jW8UlrtcEac

------

7)  The Beach Boys -- "Baby Blue" (1979)
youtube.com/watch?v=dYGA2y01hJs

OR

8)  Brian Wilson -- "Meet Me In My Dreams Tonight"  (1988)

Larry,

I can differentiate four of them off of the top right away.
1. Sting
2. Stones do Bo Diddly
3. ELO
4. White Stripes
(I can do the other four if you di your vote)

Al -- I was anticipating a vote more like what the optometrist asks for (or what happens in tournament brackets like college basketball next month or the knockout round of the World Cup).

My votes:

2  (Elliott Smith, but almost equally acceptable) not 1

3  (The Stones, not too hard at all) not 4

5  (Sting, but another tough choice) not 6

7  (The Beach Boys and also difficult) not 8

Your Sting, Stones, ELO and White Stripes in that order would be:

Secret Sisters & Elliott Smith still in progress

3  (The Stones)

5  (Sting)

The Beach Boys & Brian also still in progress!

Okay Dr. Franz - I need my eye check-up anyway.  So my A, E, I O, U, sometimes Y and the rest ….

A - Sting
E - Stones
I - ELO
O - The WS's
U - Elliot
sometimes Y - The BB's - the Dennis part is amazing he says with his ears.
Others - Secrets
THEN - Brian - but these ears hear Ronnie Spector singing this instead.

Did I pass?

It's still a "battle', essentially, but we have four of them, ie pick the 'winner' of these four contests using the nominated songs.   The winners presumably proceed to a future playoff.

The Secret Sisters v Elliott Smith

The Rolling Stones v Electric Light Orchestra

Sting v The White Stripes.

The Beach Boys v Brian Wilson

My winners

Liberty Mutual... no, those are just the Youtube ads I'm getting.

The Secret Sisters beat Elliot Smith

ELO beat Rolling Stones

Sting beat The White Stripes

Beach Boys beat Brian

So it's song v. song. 1 v. 2, etc.

Right, D.A.N. At some point, the four winners would compete against each other, either in two little one-on-one battles, or all four against each other like in the good old days. That was my intention anyway. Then there would be a future playoff bracket....

A colorful song I didn't use (there are too many blue songs out there):

Beck -- "Blue Moon"
youtube.com/watch?v=LB9tymZzxjQ

A commanding song I didn't use:

The Everly Brothers -- "Let It Be Me" (there are also a lot of "let" songs out there)
youtube.com/watch?v=TYpdLb6eKg8

And of course that sure winner:

It looks like 4 voters (including Al, who passed with flying colors) in 6 days and, so far, it seems to me that:

The Secret Sisters & Elliot Smith are tied 2 to 2.

The Stones lead ELO 3 to 1.

And Sting and the Beach Boys are each unanimously favored, 4 - 0 (sorry, Mr. and Mrs. White and Mr. Wilson).

Well, as they say, nothing ventured.....

Apropos of nothing:

Televisionaries -- "King of the Surf" (thanks for everything, Mr. Berry)
youtube.com/watch?v=PWRJ0TP5EIQ

Lightning Bolt -- "USA Is A Psycho" (you're telling me)
youtube.com/watch?v=9iLryS2bVVU

Irving Harrison & His Commanders (?) -- "Let's Misbehave" (classic, possibly familiar from Dennis Potter's wonderful Pennies From Heaven)

bonnie -- thanks for the excellent eye chart. I will interpret your votes and also keep it handy to see if I need better glasses.

No, the dentist is today at 2 pm.

I DO like Bonnie's vision-quest here!  She didn't like vowels in the beginning - but seemed to soften that stance.

Luckily during my physical today, no eye charts came out.  I was practicing my squinting though - just in case.  Me as well, Larry, dentist tomorrow.

I still don't know how I passed YOUR test here!

Al -- One thing I didn't anticipate about reaching a certain age was that one's teeth reach that age too, which means they have problems they never had before -- and isn't it great that the most expensive dental procedures aren't covered the same way expensive medical procedures are (in the USA anyway)?

As for my little test, one (a) votes four times, choosing song 1 or 2, then song 3 or 4, and so on or (b) gets creative and ranks all 8 in a row like our budding optometrist did, which then gets translated into votes for either song 1 or 2, then 3 or 4, then 5 or 6, then 7 or 8. Voila!

Angel Olsen -- "What It Is"

Steve Hauschildt -- "Reverse Culture Music"

Shana Falana -- "Who We Are"

With five voters so far, we may one day reach a quorum!
