Hi all,

I know that I am a bit early to post this.  Yet I want to spend tomorrow with my Father.

The song for this week is Beaches In Mind from TWGMTR.  We all like to visit the the beach and have many good memories of that.  What a great song to remind all that summer is near.

Happy Listening!!!

I've got 'Beaches in Mind' too Mary.  Problem is... ... ...I have LARGE trouble navigating through the sand anymore.  Why?  Too old.  Sand needs to be sprinted across in order to keep yourself from being shifted, tossed...and burnt.  The lead vocal just doesn't make it for me.  The lyrics?  Whoa Nelly!!!

The ONLY time I get up before dawn is to go golfing.  Those guys ALL need more sleep before they try on a Beach...or a bathing suit.  And these lyrics?  Why did they even go in this direction?  The formula?  NO thanks.  The formula NEVER really existed in THIS form.  The formula was to grow, mature, progress, move and make some art.

Sorry Mary.  THIS is one of several songs on the album that shouldn't even be on the album.  It's way below Brian's or the group's legendary standards.  Listening to input from the wrong people may be the democratic thing to do but artistically?  Yikes!!!  [eek]

'That's Why God Made the Radio' COULD HAVE BEEN a terrific album...a solid statement...a memorable climax to a storied legacy.  Instead it included some totally pedestrian, unreasonable facsimile 'stuff' like this.  A potential "ten" L.P....relegated to a 5.  Thanks for democracy...except in THIS instance.

And then *he* fired ***THEM***???

Have a great Father's Day.

Great title and a great vocal opening and then repeated on the chorus. But the rest is a mess. I think Brian should have written the lyrics, or maybe with Scott Bennett. Might have been a good song. A different verse melody, too. I listened to the entire album last week for the first time in almost a year and was very pleasantly surprised. So I am higher on it than Lee. I would give it a 7 out of 10. Beaches In Mind and Daylight Over The Ocean are the only "misses" for me. Spring Vacation is weak, but I enjoy Brian and the Boys harmonies on it. I am always "enthused" by the Boys opening harmonies on Beaches In Mind, but yes, Lee, the verse and Mr. L's lyrics always send me crashing into the rocks.

Happy Father's Day to all you Dads!

Have to agree, it's that 40% (I'm a bit more forgiving than half) of TWGMTR that carries the mark of Beach Boys album disasters from the 80s and 90s.  Not hard to tell who's is who's on that LP, regardless of the writing and production credits (Michael E. as 'Executive Producer'!?! - Now THAT'S the mark of Brian D. being overly gracious to his cousin).  Like Lee, it coulda shoulda been a 10, solidifying the Beach Boys' legacy in the best way possible (think of the closing suite of songs on 'That's Why God Made the Radio' accompanying the 'No Pier Pressure' songs written with the 'boys in mind - WOW!).

It's actually good that you bring these songs out for discussion, Mary.  I've learned a LOT of my Brian Wilson/Beach Boys history and catalogue from reading through many such discussions here and on the Smiley-Smile board.

(EDIT - Messed up the best of one with the best of another.  Fixed - I think)

I have to respectfully disagree with Lee and Curt.

The day I'm too old for the beach, tie a weight around me, and throw me into the ocean.

Sure, I'm not getting up before dawn like Mike sings so I can carry on.  I usually sleep in and stroll to the beach around noon after some coffee and breakfast.

While I agree that Beaches in Mind doesn't really measure up with the closing four songs of The Beach Boys (likely) swan song, I do like Beaches in Mind a lot.  Nice pick Mary, especially considering this week marks the official beginning of summer in the US.

I’d probably rather be at the beach than anywhere else.  I haven’t had time to hit the beach recently.  I do miss it.

Great song, Mary.  Check out the scenes:

KDS - I like going to the beach and love being near the water - Not liking Beaches in Mind has nothing to do with that. Other than the great refrain, I just don't think it is a very good song. Mike should have come up with a better lyric. And honestly, the melody doesn't do much for me in the verses, either. Love the title and the refrain, though. It is on a very good Beach Boys album. Holds up well after five years.

Curt,

It was moreso Lee that said he was too old for the beach.
