Hi all,

The song for this week is Hushabye.  It is a nice soothing song to hear at the start or end of a day.  This song is easy on the ears.  A fabulous lullaby.  Wouldn't it be great to have one of them sing this song to us before we go to bed for the night?

I used to think that this song was a pedestrian waste of time and ears.  A decided missing of the boat.  A musical mistake.  A misfire of some two minutes and fifty nine seconds in duration.  [although it always seemed entirely longer.]

THAT was when the Mystics were aiming the Doc Pomus/Mort Shuman tune at the entirely wrong target.  Then, out of the blue, Brian Wilson re-imagined it.  Gershwin would have to wait his turn.  THIS song needed fixing in the worst way.  One doesn't gallop through the ritual of encouraging the act of falling asleep and Brian didn't.

What emerged...the result of being properly and impressively rebuilt...was the song as it was likely intended to exist... ... ...whether Doc and Mort knew it or not.

Brian had the ability and the entirely distinctive talent to make almost any song uniquely his own.  Compare this Beach Boys magical moment to its predecessor for all the evidence necessary to prove that Brian Wilson understands  M U S I C.

We were just listening to All Summer Long last weekend.

Other than Sloop John B, Hushabye is probably my all time favorite BB cover. Brilliant arrangement.

What a nice song this week, Mary.
I was very young but I remember the original by the Mystics.  When we were just little kids, my dad would play music for us to go to sleep by.  There’s a better than even chance I remember the song from then.  I would have been about 6 years old.
The song has it’s roots in a lullaby called “All the Pretty Horses”.  Here’s a version by Peter, Paul, and Mary:

Here’s the Beach Boys [love] :

Pleasant dreams to all.

Does anyone else find the Beach Boys version infinitely soothing for the soul?

Best played when needed.

You nailed it Bonnie!  I didn't even make the connection, but it sure does.
