I am posting the song for the week a bit early.  The song for this week is Spirit of America.

Did you know that Craig Breedlove is still alive and KICKIN' ... even as I type?  He is a 5 time world land speed champ...He was the 1st to hit 500 mph...then the first to hit 600 mph.  AND...It's A great song...from a Class A lp.

The Beach Boys had so many hit songs from 1962-66 that many great songs flew under the radar.   Spirit of America is no exception.

And in many of the later years, their great songs just flew under the radar...period. [frown]

Yes, particularly in the United States, where with the possibly exception of Rock and Roll Music and Kokomo, the BB story kind of ends with Good Vibrations.

Even the stellar run from 1967-73 was mostly ignored by record buyers

If only there were more like you who stuck in out for those great early 70s albums, perhaps we'd have gotten more like them.

Like a few tracks on Little Deuce Coupe I'd put this one in the 'excellent filler' category.

Rushed out to meet a commercial demand, LDC isn't an album of great songs - but as a picture of Brian's blossoming in the studio, it's a joy.

However we argue the relative merits of Beach Boys product post 'Good Vibrations', their commercial prime coincided with their music expressing something impersonal, greater than themselves: indeed, the 'Spirit of America' - young, white, baby boomer America, one of the most important classes of that moment in the history of the world.

Sometimes a marvellous individual talent, coincides with a moment in history, in the right circumstances, and you get great, timeless art.

...and also, as I was first introduced to the song as the title song of a Two record 'greatest hits' collection as it were, I never thought of it as flying under any radar.   Always loved that first line.  Makes Brian sound like he suggested later, a local sociologist.
