Something by the Jaguars called "Chevy Shut Down". They played it today on New Jersey's own WFMU (the Fool's Paradise show) http://wfmu.org/playlists/shows/53501 and I had to hear it again (it's after the brief introduction):

For comparison purposes:

Go go, go little Chevy!

And put in some "Hey Little Cobra" too:

(21 hours later and all is quiet on the Main Forum.)

Hi Kevin -- Yeah, I guess that's Fun Fun Fun at the beginning too. It looks like a copy of the 45 was sold on eBay a couple years ago for $100. The YouTube description says:

Quote:
The Jaguars - "Chevy Shut Down" b/w "Just Out Of Luck" on Cherry Records C-0369,,, Millions of hours of searching the Google has netted NO information.

I looked on the "Google" too and couldn't figure out who the Jaguars were -- it's been a popular name for rock bands -- but they may have begun their career in Oklahoma in 1964.

Then there is this comment on YouTube from 6 months ago:

Quote:
This is my Dad singing this song. The Jaguars only recorded 2 songs back in the 60's. Chevy Shut Down and Just Out Of Luck. I know he was proud to see this. There are still some copies of these songs left but very hard to find.

I wonder if his dad could translate the lyrics. The Jaguars appear to have been ahead of their time.

I love when they play obscure music. This playlist is impressive. Inspired me to stream WFMU on Saturday night, but I got some kind of world music. Often the case with public radio.

WFMU's Bill Kelly has been a friend to my husband's band for several decades. He plays obscure garage bands from all over the country. Now he is one of the DJs on Little Steven's Underground Garage. Norton Records helped us at our benefit. I saw a few of their songs on your drag racing / surf set.

another YouTube comment:
Quote:
"The lead guitarist on this record actually went on to have a successful career in Nashville as a session guitarist, playing on lots of recordings with lots of well known artist. He also played several years on Hee Haw and played with Wayne Newton for a few years after going on a Persian Gulf tour with him.
"

Did some digging and he could be referring to a Dale Sellers...I wonder if he's the 'Sellers' in the writing credits (below)?

"Cherry Records C-0369 is Chevy Shut Down / Just Out of Luck by the Jaguars.  Nice hot rod/surf mid-sixties garage sound with plenty of guitar.  This group is apparently none of the known Jaguars in California, Ohio, Kentucky--all I'm sure of is the masters came from Nashville Matrix and the records were pressed at Southern Plastics.  Jade Music is also on the label with writing credited to Righteous/Black/Sellers for Chevy and J. Righteous for Luck side"

That's pretty much all there is about the track online

Seems like all car songs like to go with a strange chord progression, including early versions of songs:

With Shut Down, beginning on a major II chord (the B flat) and into the flat IV chord it goes through that great progression until it goes into blues punch verse. But check out the vocals only.

Almost seven years after the original post regarding an obscure song called "Chevy Shut Down", a discussion broke out on a blog (mine). The enduring mystery no longer endures. Hey, it's the internet.

See the updated post, including a picture of some of the Jaguars, plus comments from people who know all about it:

And a video of the song that works (be sure to turn it up):

PS: A "Hey Little Cobra" that works:

Thanks Larry I had forgotten about this thread.  Not sure how I found Dale Sellers' name back in 2013 but I guess that hunch was correct.

The co-writer "Black" is Jerry Black from the band, I'm guessing.  Righteous (third co-writer) sounds kind of familiar as a name but I can't place it.
