The clips have been posted below.

If any of these links do not work for you, just let me know and we’ll endeavour to find an alternative clip.

You will notice the version of ‘Surf’s Up’ is from The Smile Sessions. That is the version that won Season VII.

As per the annual play-offs, I ask you to vote using either one of three methods.

Ideally, people will vote 1-10 (in their order of preference).

If this appeals to you, you can copy and paste the titles (just below) into your post and put next to each song your order (1 = favourite song, 10 = least favourite song).

Otherwise, feel free to just vote for your top 3 or top 5 in order. (The songs you don't rate will then be allotted equal points of the remainder.)

See you next Monday (with the results).

I will have "Don't Worry,Baby" as first place,

but not sure I can separate the rest.  yeah, even "I Get Around" is very inventive and original--wouldn't want to make it 10th place.

L: what would have been your 6-10, was 'Help Me, Rhonda' in there?  I miss it, but I wouldn't kick out 'Til I Die' to get it.  or "Heroes & Villains."   "Darlin."  "Breakaway"?   "This Whole World"?  "Sail On, Sailor"?   "Still a Mystery to Me"?  "All I Ever Need"?  "Kiss Me, Baby"?  "Still I Dream of It"?

John B:  The other five from a list I made in 2012 were (in alphabetical order):

California Girls
Caroline No
I Just Wasn't Made For These Times
Kiss Me, Baby
Let Him Run Wild

I didn't try to rank the 10 back then and fortunately don't have to do these five now. [smile]

yea, for Larry's choices!  Okay, you convinced me.  Dump 'God only Knows' in favor of 'Caroline, No.'  Make it happen!

'Let Him Run Wild' yes, needs in, but which to kick off?

Maybe we could do an easier contest: songs for the Hall of Shame.

I suggest "Make it Good".   on carl & the passions, so tough, Dennis' worst.
"Hotter" and "Smart Girls" by Brian on the Landy wrecked (but still in places great!) "Sweet Insanity"

someone is going to offer the version of "Hey, Little Tomboy" with the spoken part (on "Adult Child").    not because of musicality...

Not a fan of Blondie and Rickey's "We Got Love" from the 'In Concert' album, and 'Holland' outtake..

Lee M. would probably include a few from 'Surfin' Safari'.  but hey, you gotta start somewhere.

Solo Mike's Jamaica inspired cover of the Dave Clark V's "Over & Over".?

Bruce's prolonged disco mix of 'Here Comes the Night".?

1. Good Vibrations
2. God Only Knows
3. Surf’s Up
4. Tie for Don’t Worry Baby/Caroline, No (yes, Carol, I know, isn’t officially a contender)
5. ‘Til I Die
6. The Warmth of the Sun
7. In My Room
8. Surfer Girl
9. Wouldn’t It Be Nice
10. I Get Around

Other than for the constraints of the competition I would vote these all a #1.

1. I Get Around (The Beach Boys - 1964)
Not my #1 favourite Beach Boys song (that will always be ‘She Knows Me Too Well’), but this is close. Vintage Beach Boys. Such an exciting record. I love the way the chorus just takes off, I love the unexpected key change. I love listening to the sound on the fade out.

2. Don’t Worry Baby (The Beach Boys - 1964)
Great single! Again, there are a couple of other Beach Boys songs, not featured here, that I prefer, but it’s still a welcome sound.

3. God Only Knows (The Beach Boys - 1966)
Took me a while to really get into this. I still have a problem with the draught horse pulling the milk cart, but it’s such a well put together song. Only discovered a few years back that that was Brian impersonating Mike on the middle bit and not actually Mike. Someone forgot to tell the makers of Summer Dreams

4. Wouldn’t It Be Nice (The Beach Boys - 1966)
Speaking of well put together, holy crap, have you heard the vocal only version of this? Talk about a hard working guy! The harmony arrangement is astounding.  The tempo change I suspect was inspired by ‘We Can Work It Out’ just a few months earlier. I reckon this is one of those that won’t get many 1st places from voters, but just couldn’t be down the bottom of anyone’s list either, as was the case in its Season III victory. Brilliant record. Interesting that there are two released versions of the bridge with Mike on one and Brian doing the other (a demo?). In Australia, this is the theme to both the Gold Lotto commercial and a Cadbury chocolate commercial.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=44&v=4NxkDLZtsL8&feature=emb_logo (features Brian singing lead on the bridge; does anyone know the story?)

5. The Warmth of the Sun (The Beach Boys - 1964)
Very pretty and melancholic.

6. In My Room (The Beach Boys - 1963)
I used to like this a lot more. Still very pretty though.

7. Surfer Girl (The Beach Boys - 1963)
It certainly wins best clip of the week. Anyway… same as above. The melody being based on ‘When You Wish Upon a Star’ brings it down a peg or two for me. If I went to a Beach Boys concert and they didn’t do this, I wouldn’t mind.

8. Good Vibrations (The Beach Boys - 1966)
I’m obviously in the minority, but I’ve never hung out to hear this. The melody is ok, the lyrics are unexceptional. A recording tour-de-force but it's never been one of my favourite BB records. I actually prefer something simple and beautiful like 'Barbee'. Obviously brilliant but I do not have much emotional attachment to this record. I somehow think innocence had been lost by this point and it was becoming a case of ‘how clever can we be?’.

9. ‘Til I Die (The Beach Boys - 1971)
I was a latecomer to these last two songs, from when I bought the Sunflower/Surf’s Up two-fer around the mid 2000s. But I was late to ‘Add Some Music to Your Day’ too, and I love that. Respect.

10. Surf’s Up (The Beach Boys - 1966 & 1971/2011)
I was firmly in the ‘what are those lyrics about?’ camp. Fine if it’s ‘I Am the Walrus’ and intentionally silly, but I get the feeling this was supposed to be taken seriously. I couldn’t. Stunning vocals and tune though.

Final Beach Boys Battle – Darren Ray Decade Battle of Songs

1) Wouldn’t It Be Nice
Why?  Okay this is flawless perfection and kind of bridges the older BB sound to what was to become.  Opening in A major, moving to F and then the bitonality of the bridge AND it’s a happy song!  It’s my #1 completely.  I LOVE Brian’s vocal!  Opens, arguably, one of the five GREAT pop albums of ALL time!

2) Surf’s Up
Why?  It’s my very close second.  It’s one of the cornerstones of Smile and never got its day until it became the title of an album.  It was THAT far ahead of its time!  PLUS Lennie Bernstein loved it! Shear brilliance all over the place.  SMILE was experimental music!!!!!  Brilliant.

3) Good Vibrations
Why?  Because it is what it is!!!  A classic, a game changer, turning pop music on its nose.  Brian the producer is changing the game. And the Beatles are watching - songs within songs.  Modular writing and recording.

4) God Only Knows
Why?  Considered by many to be the greatest piece he’d written.  I argue it to 4th this week but it is completely in the elite level of Brian compositions, arrangements and productions.  It WILL live on and on.

5) Surfer Girl Why?
Supposedly the first song that he writes in his car?  It is a beauty of a song that shows he BB’s tender side – yes-sir-ee. It’s got the cool little modulation – with “everywhere I go-oh-oh (lands). There something ever so soothing about it!

6) I Get Around Why?  Totally cool sound then and still holds.  This is where Brian takes on the Beatle challenge full step.  The staccato and stops and starts are played to perfection.
7) The Warmth of the Sun  Why?  It’s got the melancholy going for it but it reaches and soars almighty.  Written the day/night of the JFK assassination.  Brian and Mike were clicking.

8) In My Room Why?  CLASSIC harmony woven over the simple arpeggiations.  It still can get to you!

9) ‘Til I Die
Why?  Gets into the soul of Brian Wilson and this is deep.  LOVE the Steve Desper mix of it – very much.  Are we simply morsels on this earth or do we leave an impact?

10) Don’t Worry Baby Why?  Brian answers Phil and the Ronettes and builds his own beehive sound in the process.  Car song – don’t back down, man, drive! Flip of I Get Around.  Cool how he gets from E to F#.  He's at it again.

Just noticed my fave three all from 1966. Not surprised. My favourite AFL footy team won their only premiership in that year. My favourite TV show was screening in Australia (The Samurai - a Japanese program.  It didn't screen in US only Hawaii.) And The Beatles were still peaking with classic hits ... and Elvis was off making B grade movies and B grade singles.
