Deborah,

Glad you enjoyed the movie.  It's truly the movie Brian Wilson deserves.

The film is excellent as are the extras> But I have to think that there must be many more "studio scenes" from both the PS and Smile sessions that were not used in the film that we'd all love to see. I would guess that just to make sure they filmed and used the best scenes for the film, many others were filmed but wound up on the "cutting room floor". I have to believe that is the case--there is practically no chance that all of the scenes they decided to use are the only ones they filmed. Any director would film multiple scenes, and then choose what he wants from that. All in favor of releasing all of the studio scenes raise their hands!!!!!

You'll have to contact the creative team behind this.  It would be a monumental task recreating all of the those scenes.  The short answer for anyone to be a "fly on the wall" is listen to the Pet Sounds Sessions box and it's obvious that they took the dialogue word-for-word and exactly the inflection that Brian used.  Those pieces are soooooo believable simply because they were exact recreations.

Maybe I wasn't clear. Of course I'm not asking or expecting additional PS/Smile session scenes to be re-created and filmed. All I am saying is that I'm guessing additional session/studio scenes were most likely filmed originally, and Pohlad & Co. of course used the ones they preferred for the movie--but that other scenes must have been filmed and shelved somewhere. THOSE are the scenes I (and I assume we) would all love to see.

smiley Frank,

Again, contact the man, Bill Pohlad.  He seems cool enough to give you an answer!  When in doubt, go to the source.

All of the posts (a year ago) sing the praises of these sections (the studio scenes).  Everything seems to indicate VERY spontaneous feel of  how they did this.  From Consequence of Sound:
http://consequenceofsound.net/2015/06/interview-director-bill-pohlad/

You can almost feel the joy and insanity seeping through the sequences where Brian records the music that will become Pet Sounds. What was it like filming those scenes?

It was fantastic. It really was like a dream come true. First of all, we got to shoot in the actual studio that Brian and the Wrecking Crew had used to record the music for Pet Sounds, so that was special in its own regard — to have those ghosts in the room. I wanted it to be very spontaneous, to be like you were really there. We hired real musicians as opposed to actors. Paul had been studying a lot, both the Pet Sounds sessions and Smile session tapes where you can hear Brian working with the Wrecking Crew, working on the music, and it really infused in him that style or pattern that Brian uses. So we actually just brought the musicians in, dressed them up in period clothes, handed them the music — we didn’t do any rehearsals — and Paul just started working with them as Brian would’ve worked with them. We shot it spontaneously, much like a documentary. I think that’s what gives it its quality.

And I was merely saying go listen to the REAL recordings of Pet Sounds to get the feel of what was happening.  THAT was the textbook for us as fans and obviously the film people as well and they NAILED those sections.

And a good discussion revisiting the film a year later!

I saw it on opening night, saw it again 3 days later, and bought the Blu-Ray the day it was released. I too, had hoped there would be a category of deleted scenes, but sadly there are only a few. But the director's commentary is awesome. So many "behind the scenes" details are revealed, and I'd say a "must see, and hear...."

How do I get in contact with Pohlad??
Also really cool was the authenticity of the period clothes--from Carol Kaye's glasses, to Mile Love wearing the golf glove while sing GV, to the shirts Brian wore--especially that one scene with Brian in the control booth happily shaking his fist at the music--he (Paul Dano) is wearing that same polo shirt (thin red stripes) that Brian wears on some shots used on the cover of several PS books and publications!

So I could be TOTALLY wrong here, but I would bet that this film will get a directors cut somewhere down the road. I think Pohlad hinted that the film is currently exactly how he wants it...So that's evidence against the idea of a directors cut.

That being said, Pohlad and others on the L&M team have worked closely with Terrence Malick who is kinda famous for fiddling with directors cuts in the past...perhaps they will be inspired in the future to fiddle with L&M for an updated release (a 10 year anniversary of the film). Love and Mercy will very much become a classic, and I'd fully expect Criterion to nab the film...which would probably mean we will at least get a slew of extra scenes in the future. Fingers crossed!

Absolutely - would LOVE the extra/deleted scenes (besides the three or so included).  My wife and I truly enjoyed the costume extra - that team nailed it.
