I personally am pretty intrigued by the fact that Brian's long talked about Rock N Roll album might finally be his next project.   But from the way Brian's been talking it sounds like he's interested in covering certain songs from the 50s all the way through the 70s.  He's mentioned the likes of Chuck Berry and Little Richard but I've also heard him mention Paul McCartney and Bruce Springsteen as well.

I guess the key is even if there are covers of 50s, 60s, and 70s rock/pop songs are finding ones that gel together to make a satisfying covers album.  Also will there be any ballads or being that it's referred to as the rock n roll album will Brian strictly cover all uptempo songs.  Plus while I do like Brian's more mellow music it would be interesting to hear him do one nearly hundred percent kick a_ _ rock album.  In other words Brian's trademark harmonies are still there but also accompanied by some pretty hard rocking guitar solos.

I know some might not be thrilled by a third Brian covers album but he apparently has been passionate about doing this since he's talked about it on and off for quite some time.   I hope before Brian calls it a career we get this as well as the full My Life suite.

They played Little Richard's "Keep a Knockin'" last night at Grand Ronde, OR; I thought it went over very well with the crowd, as it was one hundred percent kick a__!

"Keep On Knockin" would be a great choice for the Rock N Roll album.  As for Chuck Berry I think the two obvious choices would be either "Johnny B. Goode" or maybe "Sweet Little Sixteen".   I know the Beach Boys would sometimes do "Johnny B. Goode" in concert and I think Brian has even done it occasionally with his current band.   And the reason I mentioned "Sweet Little Sixteen" is because the song did have an influence on Brian with "Surfin USA".

kds,

Didn't think of that one.  A "Thunder Road" cover could be interesting.   I don't know if Brian would want to do "Hungry Heart" since Mike already beat him to it.[smile]   Some are saying "Girls in Their Summer Clothes" would be the top Springsteen song for Brian to cover.  While the song is good and Bruce did say that was his take on a Brian Wilson/Beach Boys song I think it's still to recent to fall into a rock n roll classics category.  Although you never know maybe Brian would still consider covering it and it could be part of a Deluxe Edition.

Brian also mentioned covering Paul McCartney.  But I wonder if he'd do another Paul song or if they would just use "Wanderlust" which Brian made for the Art of McCartney tribute album?   I thought Brian and the band did a very good cover of "Wanderlust" but there are some other McCartney songs that I think Brian could do interesting covers of.

I have a feeling that the rock n' roll Brian decides to do will pretty much be whatever he declares is rock n' roll to him...No Pier Pressure was definitely about letting us know that he was going to make the music he wanted and hoped would make us happy too.

Debbie KL,

I think you're right.   And while I think Brian will select mostly uptempo tracks I'm sure he'll still do a a few of his favorite ballads from the rock era.

I know the artist hasn't been mentioned, but I think Brian and his band would go a great job with Meat Loaf's You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth (Hot Summer Night).  Maybe a guest vocalist could handle the lead.

If Springsteen, 'Get Your Wheels and Roll'  !  (thunder road is WAY too Bruce/specific).

'Keep a Knockin'' is cool!

I would fear 'Sweet Little 16' for the underage inference at this point...
