Mary and I have had several discussions recently regarding the Song of the Week thread…and about Brian’s Board in general.  She’s been concerned that her song choices weren’t adequate…but as I told her, “HEY, that can’t be” – I mean, these are Brian Wilson songs we’re talking about!  “No”, I told her, it’s just another slow-down…due perhaps to several factors, including the break in the tour, no recent recordings, the northern hemisphere cold and the southern hemisphere heat.

So we’ve decided to challenge Brian’s BEST fans (you!).  We want YOU to pick some songs.  With more people involved in the SOW, every other thread gets more views/comments.  This IS Brian’s Board after all – he should have a busy board, even with Instagram, Twitter, etc.  Those are fine for ‘quickies’ – this Blue/Green/Black Board is where the real love is shared. 😍

Proposed Changes…Feedback Requested…Volunteers Needed

We’re thinking of moving the Song of the Week to Friday.  Mary will still host/coordinate, perhaps picking the SOW once per month – but we want Guest Hosts.  Anyone here (and those lurking).  I’ll gladly share the list of songs/dates chosen over the past three years(!).

But don’t wait for us to change it up – if you have another idea for stimulating the board, please speak upShould we even have a Song of the Week?  Should it be on Friday? Sunday? Wednesday?  Should we replace this thread with another idea?

Let’s put a spark into this Board again.  Many of us still have surprises to discover.  Look at Larry’s recent thread about ‘last song you ever hear’ – I had no idea Garry Trudeau featured such a moving tribute to Brian’s music in Doonesbury.  As Andy Paley said (when discussing his work with Brian on the “Anthology” LP) … “This stuff is like gold, waiting to be discovered.”

Let’s uncover some nuggets. 💰⛏

Mary will still post the SOW this coming Sunday.  That gives us a week to float ideas or just roll up our sleeves and start panning for gold.  She's been faithfully picking songs for a long time here - I know you appreciate her efforts like I do.  [thumb]👏[thumb] Let's help out.

Thanks for reading - and for helping.

- Doug & Mary

Hi all,

Thank you Doug, for posting.

I hope that people contribute when I post the song of the week on Sunday.  I can always use suggestions for songs.  I have been consulting the back of I Am Brian Wilson for several months.  Is there an album most of you like that I can pick a song from?  Does someone want to be guest host for one week or two?  Should we take holidays off?  Since we like talking about Brian and his songs saying things about a song of his shouldn't be hard.  I know that we all have our lives.  Yet it doesn't take long to pick a song.  While live concerts might increase activity on the forum the love of Brian should inspire all even when he isn't touring or recording.

I hope that all of you have a wonderful weekend.

I absolutely don't want to host, and I appreciate Mary.  But I could make a suggestion for a week to come.  It's one of the most controversial of all Brian Wilson songs songs because of the horrible 2nd Landy tenure, and some people are going to understandably criticize the lyrics. and yet...  Still, to me it remains a great song; it's the high point on 'Sweet Insanity' and it's called "Thank You."  and...did Brian secretly toss in a little 'Something Stupid' at the end, as if in answer to the lyrical mistakes in this song?

Geez, it's easier than you think, John - I mean, really - you just presented a song right there.

I know...but people are going to complain about that one.

how about, bugs, in honor of a peaceful guy to be celebrated on Monday,

"Peace On Earth" by Brian?

this is a song I do not physically own, but it's effing great!   It apparently was only offered as a download extra by Amazon, for 'Songs in the key of Disney.'

Had somehow missed Peace On Earth. Thanks so much for mentioning this song. Just played it on Spotify and it is a beautiful song.

Hi. One reason I've never gotten interested in Song of the Week is that I've been involved with the weekly Battle of the Bands. The BOTB features at least one song connected to Brian in some way, plus three other songs. There is usually a theme that evokes other connections to think about, as well as people's rankings and discussion.

I hosted the Battle six times last year and was thinking of skipping 2019. There's a bit of work involved in being the host, a bit more than simply picking a song, but not a lot more. Apparently like Song of the Week, the Battle has slowed down lately.

I'd be happy to host Song of the Week sometimes, although I'm not sure how closely connected to Brian a song needs to be.

At any rate, I played a song in the car today that I've always loved. I'll keep it a secret for now, except to say it's not by Brian's old group. [smile]

John - You did it again (picked another song)...you're better at this than you think [wink].  And I can't recall anyone ever complaining about someone's choice for SOW, so it's cool.

Larry - Thank you...I somehow overlooked the one and only 'rule', which is Brian wrote or arranged (at least part of) it.  As far as details to include - that's up to you.  Simply the title, a link to the music, the significance to you, a factoid, a question, etc.  The more the host includes, the more likely the comments are to grow - though I've seen long threads just from mentioning the title.  When I host, I wind up picking a song that seems to really catch me...and then the engineer/detective in me digs deep to find out why this song attracts me so - of course, because it's Brian's music I'm often left with questions.

Anyone?  You don't even need to volunteer...let's just get some ideas out there.  Email someone and spread the word!

This is Brian’s boardWe know he deserves better!

Given the lack of participation, maybe it should be changed to Song of the Month. I offer this as a serious suggestion.

Hi all - I have always enjoyed SOW and lurk more than offer a thought. I do so appreciate Mary and Doug's efforts. I am willing to do a guest host gig. Just let me know how and when. Last week I was appreciating Orange Crate Art and Summer In Monterey from Orange Crate Art and Car Crazy Cutie and Custom Machine from the Little Duece Coupe album. So let me know and I will put on my guest hosting tux.

Excellent, Curt - You bring the Southern California view to this forum.

Though Larry may be ultimately correct, let's see if we can keep the W in SOTW.  Pick a weekend (anyone):

Fri, Feb 1 (or Sat...or Sun) -
Feb 8 -
Feb 15 -
Feb 22 -
Mar 1 -

If you'd like to see the other 87 songs (?) that have been chosen, let me know and I'll try to post a pdf.

Hi all,

I think that the person who first posted about taking a week should take the first guest spot.  I was too tired to post the song of the week this week.  Mostly, it was due to lack of reply.  If people like this thread they should reply to it.

I’ve been overly busy lately and somewhat remiss in my appreciation here. But I’d be happy to post a SOTW anytime.

It's easy to see which songs have been used by going to the Song of the Week sub-forum and using the little "Search this category" box at the upper left.

I shall take the first guest spot. Stay tuned.
