10. California Saga: California (The Beach Boys - 1973) (nil 1st places) - 77

Thanks to everyone who took the time to vote.

We had 20 voters for the week.

Special thanks again to D.A.N for scrutinising the votes for me.

Congratulations to Larry Franz who selected ‘You Still Believe in Me’ in his Week 14.

And congratulations to Peter Simpson and BrianFan who selected ‘Don’t Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder)’ and ‘Help Me, Rhonda’ in their Weeks 40 and 7, respectively.

All three now progress to the Gold Play-Off.

Most of these songs had been used before in the Battle.

This is the second time around for ‘You Still Believe in Me’.

It won Gold in Week 9 of Season IV (Verden McCutcheon) and just fell short of making the Preliminary Final. (In fact, it was ranked 11th, the next cab off the rank. If we had not promoted the song that came 2nd in the Silver Play-Off’ (which we no longer do) – in this case, ‘Lola’ (The Kinks) – ‘You Still Believe in Me’ would have made it through to the Preliminary, with the chance to progress. ‘Lola’ finished 6th in the Prelim. Justice has been done!)

‘Don’t Talk…’ has a strong history in the Battle.

It won Gold in Week 2 of Season I (Wow! Great Concert!) and finished 5th in that season’s Preliminary Final.

Last year (Season VI), it won Gold in Week 35 (Deb#1), came 1st in the Prelim and finished 2nd (Season Silver) in the Gold Play-Off.

Could it go one better this year?

It’s the first time for ‘Help Me, Rhonda’. David Wilson used ‘Help Me, Ronda’ (from Today) in Week 21 of Season II. It won a Silver and didn’t make play-offs.

It was the first time for Brian’s solo version of ‘The Warmth of the Sun’.

The Beach Boys version is probably the unluckiest song not to win a Gold Play-Off. It’s been used twice (in Seasons I and V) and both times has finished 2nd (Season Silver) in the Gold Play-Off. (It also came 9th in the Ultimate Battle – to commemorate five full seasons – finishing behind the six songs that have now each won a season plus ‘California Girls’ and ‘Surf’s Up’.)

‘Help!’ has almost mirrored its performance from Season III.

That year it won Silver in Week 26 (Kevin Witts), won the Silver Play-Off and finished 4th in the Preliminary Final.

This time, four years later, it won Silver in Week 7 (BrianFan), won the Silver Play-Off and finished 5th in the Prelim.

As I’ve said before, we’re a consistent bunch!

‘Be My Baby’ first won Gold in Week 35 of Season III (Sue Schlichter) and finished 4th in the Gold Play-Off.

This time it falls shorter, ending 6th in a Prelim.

Second time for ‘Rhapsody in Blue’ too.

It won Gold in Week 8 of Season I (Tom Tobben), came 3rd in the Prelim, and 9th in the Gold Play-Off.

This time it ends 7th in the Prelim.

It was also the second time for ‘Country Air’.

It also won Gold, in Week 42 of Season IV (Teenage Symphony), but no cigar as far as play-offs.

‘California Saga: California’ was used once before, in Week 21 of Season I (Domestic Animal Noises). It won a Gold and didn’t make play-offs.

This time it won Gold in Week 16 (Verden McCutcheon) and finishes 10th in the Prelim.

The order of ‘Rhapsody in Blue’ and ‘Be My Baby’ reversed from Week 18.

That time, the Gershwin song was a point ahead. This time, The Ronettes scored 22.5 points the better.

18 of the voters from Week 18 were among the 20 who voted this time, BUT five of them voted ‘The Warmth of the Sun’, ‘Rhapsody in Blue’ and ‘Be My Baby’ in a different order to last time, two voters stunningly so!

The score results for ‘Help Me, Rhonda’ and ‘Help!’ were consistent with Week 7.

18 of the voters from Round 7 voted this time, but four voters reversed their preference of the two from last time!

In theory, this week’s Top 3 may just be the top 3 songs of the year. We’ll know by this time next week.

Over the past seven years, the first place winners of the Preliminary Final, and their eventual placings, have been:

Season I - ‘Kiss Me Baby’ (The Beach Boys) (Wow! Great Concert!) (finished 5th in Gold Play-Off)
Season II - ‘What is Life’ (George Harrison) (Cynthia D. Hood) (finished 6th in Gold Play-Off)
Season III - ‘California Girls’ (The Beach Boys) (Kevin Witts) (finished 3rd in Gold Play-Off)
Season IV - ‘Penny Lane’ (The Beatles) (Al Forsyth) (finished 2nd in Gold Play-Off)
Season V - ‘The Warmth of the Sun’ (The Beach Boys) (Jo McGuire) (finished 2nd in Gold Play-Off)
Season VI - ‘Don’t Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder’ (The Beach Boys) (Deb#1) (finished 2nd in Gold Play-Off)
Season VII - ‘You Still Believe in Me’ (The Beach Boys) (Larry Franz) ?

The three place getters were out in front for most of the week.

The two Pet Sounds album tracks were neck and neck from early on.

‘You Still Believe in Me’ was in the Top 3 for 10 voters. Only one voter (Cindy) had it in her bottom 3.

‘Don’t Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder’ was in the Top 3 for 12 voters, but three voters (kds, Graciegirl and David) had it in their bottom 3.

‘Help Me, Rhonda’ was no-one’s 1st place. But it was in nine voters’ Top 3 and in just four voters’ bottom 3.

‘Rhapsody in Blue’ was the biggest polariser.

Four voters had it in their Top 3 (including two 1st places, from Pete and Tom). 10 voters had it in their bottom 3 (including five 10th places, from kds, Cindy, John E, David and bonnie).

It was the only song to receive multiple 1st AND 10th places.

‘Help!’ was also a polariser.

Four of the five voters who had it in their Top 3 placed it 1st (t Bedford, yours truly, Graciegirl and David). But six voters had it in their bottom 3 (including a 10th place from Prof. Dewey).

The only songs to not receive a 10th place were ‘You Still Believe in Me’, ‘Don’t Talk….’ and ‘The Warmth of the Sun’.

Multiple 10th places were ‘Rhapsody in Blue’ (five), ‘Country Air’ (four) and ‘Pet Sounds’ (live) & ‘California Saga: California’ (three each).

Okay, here comes this year’s Gold Play-Off!

This week is now closed.
