Hi all,

I own and listen to What I Really Want For Christmas.  It is magnificent!!!  It is hard to pick a favorite.  Each song is unique.  This CD is better than a Hallmark Card.

I've listened to it a few times this Christmas season, and will likely spin in a couple more times before the big day.

My father's a big Beach Boys fan, and I burned him a copy, and he really enjoyed it.

This is a ***great*** Christmas album, and one which in my opinion wasn't given a fair shake when it first came out. Definitely worth multiple spins this time of year - A lot of joy and warmth in those tracks.

And I remember at the time it came out, there were some people talking about the cover art - I loved it. And that was because it reminded me of albums I used to pull out as a kid, when my parents' records included those "Firestone" Christmas collections that looked like a wrapped gift with a bow on the cover, and this album took me back to a really neat place.

Great album.

Listen to that voice, that killer guitar tone, backing harmonies, Hammond organ...that's good stuff. Great stuff.

GF,

I agree that God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen is my favorite standard on the album.

I remember when the album came out, it got a lot of bad reviews.  Even Jon Stebbins wrote an unflattering review in his book Beach Boys FAQ.  So, I was a little hesitant to purchase the album last year.

But, I'm glad I did.

It's not Christmas without a few spins of this, the original Christmas album, and Child of Winter.

Imho "What I Really... " is one of the best Christmas albums. Sure for not the melancholy-oriented: as GF said, it's full of festive joy and warmth. I remember at least one critic objecting to it as being "too happy-sounding" or some nonsense like that.

Did any of you notice the production, which makes the instruments sound at times like toy instruments: I'm sure it's on purpose, as it happens only here.

By the way, here are two other pop Christmas albums I love:
"And Winter Came" by Enya (and by the way again, her new album "Dark Sky Island" is out, and I'm waiting for it as a Christmas gift).
"The Jethro Tull Christmas Album" plus "Jethro Tull Live - Christmas at St Bride's 2008" twofer.

Too happy sounding?

I guess whoever wrote that is a big fan of The Christmas Shoes.

I love the festive vibe on the record.

I've listened to this on and off the last couple weeks. Have been listening to 'On Christmas Day' so much.

I wish " On Christmas Day " would have been the opening track. I love that tune , as well as " Christmassey" and " What I Really Want For Christmas ". For the standards, I prefer "Oh Holy Night" and "The First Noel " and the earlier recording of "Joy To the World". A few years ago Brian cut Nat King Cole's " The Christmas Song " which I really love. I mix this record, The Beach Boys Christmas Album and Phil Spectors Christmas album together; then it's officially December!

Ray,

Those are some of my favs too - BB, BW, Spector.

I'm also a big fan of the Trans Siberian Orchestra's Christmas albums, the first one (Christmas Eve and Other Stories) in particular.  And Blackmore's Night's Winter Carols.

My only complaint about the BW album is that I didn't think Little Saint Nick was really necessary.  It's a decent version, but unlike The Man With All the Toys, there's really not much to differentiate it from The Beach Boys original.

Brian's lead on 'The First Noel' - jawdropping.
