I first heard Smile in 2007, I had recently got back into Pet Sounds and Good Vibrations at the time and I remember that listening to Smile blew my mind, it wasn't like anything I had heard before.  I soon bought the Smile DVD and I was very impressed with the live performance and Beautiful Dreamer was a fantastic documentary.

I have often wondered whether Brian and his band will ever perform Smile again as there has never been a performance of the album since 2004 as far as I know.  I know there was a Pet Sounds tour a few years ago (possibly the 50th anniversary), but have any Smile songs such as Heroes and Villains and Surf's Up been performed again?

Although Brian and Van Dyke Parks, along with the Brian Wilson band created a true masterpiece, I have wondered whether Brian might no longer want to perform Smile for certain reasons.

One of my biggest regrets is not having seen a SMiLE tour concert in 2004. ’Still I dream of it’.

I saw/heard it in the summer of 2005.  It was grand, but I think too complex to do and really doesn't have the legitimacy of Pet Sounds (considered by many as the album that changed pop music).  It was Brian's to tour SMiLE after releasing it finally. Fans were all spellbound, of course, hearing it.  You had the touring Stockholm Strings (who were all waving vegetables about during the song).

Deb, Hope you saw the link I posted on the 'Has everyone seen this?' post. It's SMiLE and it's wonderful

Hi Matt - Yes, 'Pet Sounds' 50th celebration actually lasted three years [biggrin].  And Al's right...'SMiLE' is a very complex LP to perform, and Brian's pushing 80.  Yet he still includes 'Our Prayer', 'Heroes & Villains' on his tours fairly often - and even 'Surf's Up' on his last tour ('Something Great from '68').

My advice (to all of us) - Once it's safe enough to resume tours, go to the first Brian Wilson concert you can.  It'll be the very best medicine for our lonely souls.

Thanks for all your replies.  It is really good to hear that Brian includes Our Prayer and Heroes and Villains on his tours as well as Surf's Up on his recent tour. I hadn't thought about Smile being a complex album to perform, but I can see what Al means.  I can't remember the Stockholm Strings waving vegetables about in the live performance on DVD, which I know was in California, but I know they were all wearing firefighter's helmets when Mrs O'Leary's Cow/Fire was performed.

Is the Smile version of Good Vibrations with the different lyrics ever performed now?  I must admit I prefer this version with the original Tony Asher lyrics and I like the "hum be dum" chorus and the longer harmonica playing.

I've seen 'Good Vibrations' performed the 'hit' way, and a hybrid of the two...but not w/Tony's & Brian's lyrics in their entirety.  Here's where I give Mike Love some credit, in that his lyrics are better overall.  But, Tony said from the start that his first cut was essentially as a place holder/guide vocal purposes...so he didn't give it much thought.
I agree with you though Matt - the 'hum be dum' also sits well with me.

No matter how Brian sings it, it's truly a special part of every show - the energy the audience returns is something great.

This is interesting as I never knew the Tony Asher lyrics were meant as a place holder or guide vocal, I must admit I like these lyrics as they give the song a slightly different feel.  The hybrid version of the two lyrics sounds really good as well.  I can imagine it really is a special part of the show as you said Bugs, Good Vibrations was the song that got me into Brian Wilson and that made me find out more about Smile.

During Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE they did the Tony and Brian lyric.  Agree with Bugs, that ML saved the song with his lyrics that were supposedly quickly written.
